Guys- try to chill.....
It seems there has been a rash of weight related topics.
I have to be honest, unless you are going hog wild on the fast food and crap, there really is no reason to "watch your weight" when pregnant. I just don't understand the need to worry about something so inconsequential in the grand scheme of things.
Pregnancy causes weight gain due to: increased blood volume, increased water volume (due to retention as well as amniotic fluid), the placenta, the growing baby, plus NEEDED fat stores to ensure a good milk supply (regardless of whether or not you plan to BF). PLUS- we are in the summer months now and water retention/edema is pretty unavoidable.
Yes- it is HARD to see the scale go up- but it's SUPPOSED to. Some women gain lots in their first trimester, others in their last. Your body is going to do what it's going to do. My SIL took spin classes until her 35th week of pregnancy and STILLED gained 60 pounds. I gained 35-40 pounds with each pg- mostly in my first 1.5 trinesters. A little less with this one but that's likely due to chasing around 2 toddlers.
In the end, it will eventually come off. For some it all comes off right away, for others, it's a bit harder.
Sorry if this comes across as harsh, but having been through it 3 times now, I can PROMISE you that in the end, it doesn't pay to worry about how much weight you wind up gaining. As long as your doctor is fine with it and your baby is healthy, it's really not something worth stressing over.

Re: Guys- try to chill.....
I DON'T want to make light of anyone's feelings. I TOTALLY get the worries- I had them myself when I was pregnant with my first.
But having been through it I realize what a silly thing it was to worry about because this is SUCH a small blip of time in our lives. Why waste a second of it worrying about something that you really have no control over?

True dat!!! Ladies- I HIGHLY recommend WW. ESPECIALLY if you plan to breastfeed because you get 10 extra points a day. I never felt like I was dieting at ALL and the weight really came off rather quickly.

I totally agree. You have ZERO control over how much weight you gain. I know people who ate so healthy their entire pregnancies, and the scale still went up. It's a part of pregnancy.
If you are determined to lose weight then you will do so after you have this baby.
I just started Weight Watchers 8 weeks ago and have lost 14lbs. It's the best diet out there IMO, and a very healthy way to lose the baby weight.

Re: Guys- try to chill.....
Great post!
I'm a first-timer, but as someone who lost some weight in the first trimester, believe me, I would've gladly gained the 6 lbs instead of losing them if it meant I wouldn't have to feel nauseous and throw up all the time. So when people tell me that I'm "lucky" or they're jealous, I can't help but look at them funny.
Without getting into the gory details, it's taken me about a 1/4 of my life to have a healthy relationship with my body and my food. I've been in a good place for the last few years and I vowed to myself that I would not obsess about my weight during pregnancy. I'll make the best choices I can, listen to my body, and what happens happens. I'll deal with the aftermath after the fact—in a sensible way.

Re: Guys- try to chill.....
really good points; i'm just trying to make sure i'm "lin line" with what i'm supposed to gain and i suppose being a yoga teacher, i'm really conscious of certain things; that's good and bad I guess! just trying to eat healthy. i'm definitely eating WAY more of the healthy foods I enjoy and my top concern is just that both baby and me are doing well and that i'm doing all the right things. i was actually concerned b/c i wasn't gaining at first....but not to worry! i'm catching up! LOL!

Can I give another perspective?
I had hyperemsis when I was pregnant and only gained 3lbs and could not keep down food except certain things.
I would have LOVED to be able to enjoy myself and eat and gain weight.
So ENJOY it

Re: Guys- try to chill.....
Once again though- I don't want ANYONE thinking I'm belittling their feelings.
It's just that there's a big "keeping up with the Joneses" mentality on LIF (just WAIT til you get to Parenting) and I know how upsetting it was to me when I was pregnant with my first when people complained about 5-10 pounds when I was up almost 30 in my second trimester. But I also realize that those 5-10 pounds were as upsetting to those girls as my 30 were to me.
Yet all (well, most of) the weight came off after I had the baby. Looking back I realized how much time I spent stressing over it and comparing myself to others. It's impossible NOT to when there are 5 posts sitting on page 1 talking about how much weight people have gained, being scared to gain weight, how to avoid gaining weight, etc.
The comparing weight gain threads do the most damage because I find that it's usually the people who haven't gained much that post on them. I know I avoided posting on them with my first and I don't even open them now.
Of course keep posting about what stresses you- weight related or not.

Re: Guys- try to chill.....
I'm not pregnant right now, but my DD just turned one.
I gained 60 pounds (that's right 6-0) during my pregnancy and all but 8 are gone. Those other 8 pounds are totally my fault and I'm working on it - been doing zumba lately.
Just know that it can and will come off.
Once you see and hold your baby, you will realize that you would gain 150 pounds if meant your child was healthy.
Congrats to all on this board. I look forward to seeing you on parenting!!!
ETA: And I ate healthy - honestly. Don't stress it!!!

ITA! Anyone who watches their weight while prego is doing harm to their unborn child IMO!
ETA - haven't been on since last night. Holy cow just saw all the weight gain posts you were talking about. Cannot stand that more than anything - a pregnant person obsessing over her weight. Awfulness!

Re: Guys- try to chill.....
I agree that we shouldn't obsess over every little pound we gain, but at the same time it's normal to worry about how our bodies will be affected (both short-term and long-term) especially for us first-time moms who have never been through this before. And it's hard not to dwell on it when all we see on TV and in magazines is how quickly people get back to their pre-pregnancy weight! Deep down, we all realize that this is not the "norm" but when you see it everywhere, it's hard not to worry about your own body and your own weight gain/loss. Unfortunately, being women, obsessing over our weight and body image comes with the territory!!

I agree that as a first time mom, I am shocked at how uncontrollable the weight gain is. Gaining 10 lbs in 4 weeks or 3 lbs in one week is a big shock to me when I hear it. Maybe the hardest part for me is not being able to control it. Its hard not to think about it when the weight affects so much of what I do....difficult to go up stairs, hard to walk, hard to turn over in bed. And its out of my hands. However, I will agree its not the biggest deal in the world and that people shouldn't obsess over it. I hope the weight gain will come off but I wouldn't know since this is my first time going through it. But thanks for putting things in perspective. My top priority is meeting my baby girl!

Re: Guys- try to chill.....
I don't think you sounded harsh or belittling. Your intentions are clearly good ones. It's always nice to hear from BTDT ladies.
That said, I also think it's normal for us (esp those that are first-timers) to have some concerns. I used to run 12-16 miles a week, and was in awesome shape. Once I got a BFP, I retired... I was too exhausted to think about running, let alone do it. I haven't gained much weight in the past four months, but my body shape was suddenly completely different. For me, it took a few weeks to get used to being "out of control" of my body for the first time in my life. I'm embracing it now, but I'm glad to see I'm not alone.
