FTM not taking a childbirth class?
is anyone here not taking a childbirth class (like bradley, lamaze, etc) for their first child? any btdt moms opt to not take a childbirth class? thoughts/feedback?
i'm undecided about whether i really want to take one. i'm a huge reader and feel i do a pretty good job with self education. i've hired a doula for my birth. where i live, the classes are pretty expensive and also time consuming so this is definitely factoring into my decision. i just don't know if i think it's really worth the time and money if i can teach myself and rely on instinct and my doula in the moment.

Re: FTM not taking a childbirth class?
Im on baby #3, and I never took a childbirth class. I probably would if I was going the "all natural" route, but since I get the epi and other drugs, I felt the classes would be a waste of time. I read a lot and got advice from btdt moms. IMO, your body really tells you what to do. HTH

Re: FTM not taking a childbirth class?
I just had my first baby last week and never took any classes. From everyone I talk to who has taken them says it's a waste. The day of the nurses tell you to breath differently anyway.
Take prenatal yoga. It's cheaper and will provide you with the same breathing exercises. Some of which you'll actually use.

this is my perspective exactly and I really want to take prenatal yoga too! do you think it's too late for me to start at 29 weeks? I was a big time runner pre-pregnancy and into exercise...
but yeah other than that as a FTM I don't plan on taking traditional child birth classes

Re: FTM not taking a childbirth class?
FTM due in a couple of days and I haven't had any classes. IMO women have been giving birth for years without classes, it's a natural process. Not to say that you may actually learn something useful in a class, I just don't feel it's necessary.

Re: FTM not taking a childbirth class?
We are doing Bradley classes.
We really enjoy them, it helps DH feel more involved with the pregnancy and labor.
Its also very important for me to have a drug free birth, barring emergency of course, and this sets me up for a good chance there.

If it helps, I did not take a single class and had a successful drug free delivery with DD#1. I did a lot of reading and watching videos. I felt well prepared.

FTM not taking a childbirth class?
I didn't take any classes and had my DD naturally and drug free. I figured going to the classes would stress me out more than help me so I saved my $$. I also figured I have practiced yoga long enough that I didn't need any more classes to teach me how to breath.

Re: FTM not taking a childbirth class?
I'm in the minority. We took a childbirth through my doctor at Winthrop and I actually found it really helpful. They pretty much went over everything with you and we got a tour of the hospital. Especially since this was my first I wanted to know what I should expect. I don't regret taking it.

It's never too late..even if you do it online (gaiam.com). Not only does it help your breathing,, it mentally prepares you to use relaxation techniques which can help in any birth plan.

FTM not taking a childbirth class?
I am a ftm and we are taking them. Not so much for me but for my husband. He was sort of clueless. This has been a good eye opener for him. I was in the hosp at 30 weeks with pre term labor. I realized then how much he did not know. He panicked more because of the unknown. We are taking our 3rd class tonight. When we walked out of the past 2 he told me everything he did not know. I am finding it helpful for him.

I didn't take a class. But, I had a very open dialog with my doctor and trusted him and my pregnancy was smooth.

Thx. This is one concern I have with not taking a class. My husband will not do as much reading and self educating as I will, not because he is uninvolved just because it is hard to compete with everything I have been devouring! Haha. I don't want him to feel lost, but our doula will be there to help him help me too.
