Re: Do you wash NEW clothes before wearing?

I never used to. DH always has and I thought it was one of his weird quirks. Since meeting him, I met someone who was in the apparel industry and she told me to ALWAYS wash everything before wearing it. I heard a few stories about fabrics in the warehouse that grossed me out.
Also, I have recently read reports that said they have done studies on clothing purchased new in stores and most things had bacterias such as ecoli on them, not just on underwear.
What happened in the warehouse?

I totally don't. Not even bathing suits usually unless I have foresight.

Re: Do you wash NEW clothes before wearing?
Generally no, but since learning *some* people actually go to stores like Macys, JCPenney, Kohls, etc and buy dresses that they use for 1 occassion and then return them - I probably will start washing everything I take home from a store now.

I used to work in a stockroom at an A&F in college and you would be disgusted with what goes on back there--bugs, mice droppings, workers picking their nose and wiping it on the nearest shirt.
So I 1000000000% wash everything I bring home before I wear it!!!!!!

Re: Do you wash NEW clothes before wearing?
I never used to but my husband is one of the people who ALWAYS washes first and he convinced me that I should, too. So, I usually wash things first but once in a while I will wear something new if I have forgotten to wash it and want to wear it that minute!

Totally agree. I've worked in retail, spent plenty of time in the stockrooms (which can do lunchroom duty as well) plus I've been inside of garment factories, so I know that none of those places are particularly clean environments.
Just look at what happens inside a fitting room...people try on clothes, they throw it on the filthy floor, store employee comes in, picks up unwanted clothes, folds it and puts it right back on the hanger or shelf. Oh and dont get me started on the crap and the smell that some people leave behind in fitting rooms...

Re: Do you wash NEW clothes before wearing?
Yes, I always wash bras, undies, swimsuits.
90% of the time, I wash my new clothes too unless it's a really delicate top or dress. I just picture nasty people buying, wearing & then returning clothes so I wash mostly everything. I really became adament about this after the bed bug craziness.

Rats running through and nesting bolts of clothes, how dirty it was, etc.

After a LIW debate years ago where some crazy girl was going to wear a dress to the WOTY and then return it (she even took pics of herself flashing the tags), I DO!

Re: Do you wash NEW clothes before wearing?
Absolutely, always did. Esp in these days where bedbugs hitch a ride on clothes. Also...there is all types of possible chemicals, allergens on the clothes before being washed. Pretty crazy to NOT wash them honestly.
PSA - I just bought my DD a dress from Lord and Taylor. Little did i realize until I got it home that it had SOMETHING, that looked like birdshit, on it. It had a wild print on it so I didnt spot it until I brought it home. Needless to say, I brought it back. I am not buying a dress with a stain/birdcrap on it.
Now if you werent going to wash that, you would have worn it never realizing there was a nasty stain hidden in the print.

When I was younger I went to the Queens Center Mall, and in the fitting room (Sterns, A&S? one of those old dept stores), there was a giant sh!t someone left. I never ran out of a store so fast!!!

Re: Do you wash NEW clothes before wearing?
most of the time I do . I don't know where it's been while shipped from a manufacturer, while being distributed in stores, and then at the store before they put them out on shelves/hangers.

I have heard the stories liek this from people who work/have worked in department stores. I also saw a show about this a while back, they showed some factories overseas where clothes are made, infested with bugs and rats/mice....

This is soooo true.
Plus my mom worked in a garment factory and there were rats/mice everywhere and cats who chased/ate the mice. I saw droppings all the time.
between the fabric warehouse, to the garment warehouse, to being shipped to the department stores, to the dressing rooms, there is so much grossness on these clothes.
That being said, I wash anything that touches my body directly and is machine washable (undies/bras/t-shirts) but not stuff that goes over like sweaters, blazers, etc. and expensive stuff or stuff that needs to be dry cleaned.

This AND..I have a girlfriend who NEVER wears underwear and I KNOW she tries on clothes without a barrier, and I always think of her

Re: Do you wash NEW clothes before wearing?
I must work in a pretty clean store then, no mice droppings or bugs in our stockroom. People try stuff yeah but it's not the way some of you make it sound. It's not like people are urinating on the carpets and then sitting there rubbing the clothes on it. I think the most you have to worry about is dust balls getting on the clothes. Idk what happens before it gets to the store though.
