Do you wake a sleeping baby?

I was told to keep DD on a 3 hour cycle of feeding/changing/sleeping. This works sometimes because she is a hungry baby and wakes to eat. However the last few days she has been sleeping longer than usual during the day and I am not sure if I should wake her to eat? Same thing in the evening, which worries me that she's not sleeping at night because of this late, long nap.

I don't wake her at night (per her pediatrician) anymore in an effort to get her to sleep longer at night. Its not working yet, she is only 2.5 wks old, but she is very fussy around 8 when we try to get her down...so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here.

Just not sure what to do. I am trying to keep her up more during the day but its really hard and doesn't always work. So is there truth to the "never wake a sleeping baby"?

Thanks for the help!

Re: Do you wake a sleeping baby?

When DS was that young I never woke him... unless we had to go out somewhere. I never woke him for a feeding.

I wouldn't. DD was a preemie and b/c of her low birth weight, we were told by the nurses we had to wake her up every 3 hours to feed her. The nurse also said, if she had been a full term baby, that order would have gone right out the window Chat Icon.

And don't worry about trying to get her on any kind of schedule yet. She's too small for that. DD was the same way and honestly, we just worked around her schedule those first few months. Hang in there Chat Icon

DD would sleep 6+ hours during the day if we didn't wake her up. So, I never let her go past four hours during the day. At night I let her go for as long as she wanted.

Never. Ever. Ever.
Under any circumstance.
Unless the house is on fire, I will let that child sleep.

I *used* to say never wake a sleeping baby, until I had one that slept ALL DAY LONG. I wake her every 4 hours to feed/play/change her, and let her go at night (on those rare occasions she sleeps at night).

Re: Do you wake a sleeping baby?

At that age, I would never wake my DS up. Babies can sleep a good 18 hours or more a day and at that age, I would not worry so much about a schedule.

If they are hungry, believe me they will let you know.

Now that DS is 3 months and on a pretty set schedule with feeding and bedtime, I will leave him napping but won't let him go more then 4 hours during the day without a feeding (It's very rare that happens, his naps are not that long anymore)

Re: Do you wake a sleeping baby?

Okay, I'm going to ruffle some feathers - but I wonder

those who say "they never wake a sleeping baby" I wonder if they are the same moms with babies who do not STTN at 4,5,6,7 ... months

I always waked during the day, and at night I went with cues. We were on schedule at 3m, DS was sleeping 10 hours at night.

eta: up until 4 weeks I was letting baby sleep whenever, after that, I started to wake every 3 hours

Re: Do you wake a sleeping baby?

I say never wake a sleeping baby, but I never let mine sleep more than 4 hours during the day, although I didn't start doing that until DD was a month old.

DS has never skipped a meal in his 6 months of life so I never woke him. Chat Icon

At 2.5 weeks, you're not doing anything wrong.. but a baby that small is going to do what she wants when she wants to... usually that's sleep!

I'm with you.

Wake sleeping baby after 3 hrs during the DAY. Let them go at night. At this point NIGHT to me was after 10pm. Both of my boys sttn (10p-7a) around the 2 month mark.

My 4 yo is a great sleeper still, transitioned to big boy bed without a hitch. I'm hoping Ryan follows suit when the time comesChat Icon

Re: Do you wake a sleeping baby?

i woke if she slept more than 4 hours at a clip during the day, other than that leave her.

Also I found that trying to keep her uo doesnt work, its actually counterproductive cause it makes them overtired and more cranky.

At 2-8 weeks just let them do what they want. After 8 weeks you can try keeping her up like an hour or so at a time. (thats what I did).

My DD's 1st long sleeping night was at 7 weeks old. She slept 7 hours. It just got better and better from there.

ITA with this.

Also to add some insight in...my sister's newborn slept for hours & hours. 14 hours. Great right? NO, when she finally went with her gut & called the lactation consultant, the baby was DEHYDRATED & needed fluids immediately. It turns out that she hadn't latched properly. It's not something to take lightly.

So the never wake a sleeping baby doesn't apply to newborns. Generally it's 2-3 hours until you feed them. Sleeping through the night is generally a 6-8 hour time. In my book, missing one feeding is ok. Missing two isn't ok.

I do wake DD up, still if she is sleeping past 5PM. It stinks but I have to wake up at 4:30AM and I need her to go to bed at a reasonable time. She has been STTN since a month old and her sleep time just keeps increasing.

Thank you for all the input...I greatly appreciate it!

If you do wake, how do you do it besides changing the diaper, talking to them etc? Alex just seems to ignore me Chat Icon

change diaper always did it for me, DS was suddenly a screamer when his diaper came off.

when I nursed he'd fall asleep within seconds, so they told me to keep him undressed, tickle his feet, etc. As long as she's eating every 3 hours, I think its fine, even if she's not full blown awake.

Re: Do you wake a sleeping baby?

Yes- I would wake him if he went 4 hours without eating. That kind of sleeping is for the night only.

I'll answer since my baby is 6 months old and still won't STTN.
To answer your question- my DD NEVER sleeps more than 1 hour during the day. If she sleeps 2 hours for a nap it's a rare event that warrants me going in and checking her breathing.
So I don't even get the opportunity to test this theory much.
It's not like she is napping for 3-4 hours and Im like- hmmm should I wake her?
This child just doesn't like to sleep. Period.
During the day or at night.
She's not a sleeper.
So if the time ever came where she did nap for longer than 20 min to an hour I am thinking I would first- Praise Jesus. And second- not wake her so maybe I can get somethign done!

I would keep a wet washcloth nearby and gently rub her back with it, oh boy did she hate that! Chat Icon
