It's a lot. But if it was super-awesome, would make me the queen of the party and make my friend extremely happy....I maybe would do it.
If you are throwing the party and that's in addition to it, then no. But say, someone else is paying and that's all I would be doing, then yes.

Its in addition to the dinner party I am throwing for appx. 25 people for my husband's 30th...
The design is amazing but the thing is that he could care less about the cake and I'd rather put the $$ towards his gift...I just thought it would be a nice touch. But whoa ladies...what would I do without you...you made me realize that I would have been extremely insane...

I was just about to respond that I don't think it's "insane" to spend ~$8 pp for cake, *if* a beautiful cake is something the guest of honor cares about. You mentioned your DH wouldn't care, so I would go to Costco, in this case.
ETA: You should post a pic of the cake, I bet one of the talented ladies here could (or know someone who could) replicate it for a fraction of the cost.

Personally, I think it is too much. I wouldn't even spend more $$ on my wedding cake! I would rather put the $$ towards a nicer gift....

I think that's a lot. I had an amazing cake made for my DH for our rehearsal dinner. It was a 3D pint of guinness for 30 people and it cost $75, so that seems very expensive.
I also had a big cake in a "40" made for him last year for 50 people and it definitely cost under $100.

Right exactly...thats how I justified not placing the order...its a bakery in the city that makes custom-made cakes only so maybe thats why it was so pricy...

If it was for a girl who would really appreciate a beautiful cake and was into those things, and it fit in the budget, I would say yes! But since there is no way my husband, or any guy I know, would appreciate that kind of cake, I think you should put the money towards a gift. My 30th b-day cake cost my hubby about $100 and it was seriously the best cake i ever had in my life!
