Unfortunatley, DH is not in the least bit handy, so if I can't do it myself, I make a phone call to someone who can.

We do it for both reasons. Both DH & I enjoyed doing the rennovations that we were "capable" of doing. We wanted the sense of accomplishment when it was done. At the same time, there were things we just paid people to do bc we didn't have the time & it just made more sense.

We do it because DH can not see paying someone to do something that he can do. I guess it has something to do with money, but he looks at it like we are paying someone a ton of money for their time to do something that I can easily do. DH gutted and remodeled our master bath and is now finishing the basement himself. He is also our gardener and landscaper.

we hired a contractor because we are doing a complete renovation. FH is not capable of pouring foundation, and we need huge earth movers.

Not so much that we ENJOY it, but we simply can't justify paying someone to do something we are caable of doing ourselves.
Of course, budget is the main reason, but I still can't say I would ever pay someone to, say- install lights, considering Victor is an electrician! (even though he HATES to do it!)

We do most ourselves because my DH is handy with construction and i am always willing to learn / pitch in. If it is something huge, we hire a contractor, like paving the driveway, etc.

we don't pay anyone to do anything. DH refuses. We rebuilt our entire house & now are doing all kinds of exterior stuff. He plans to do our roof this fall.
DH would never be happy with the work done by someone else. We are able to do more because it costs so much less to do it ourselves, however it takes much longer & sometimes I envy people that have someone come in, do it, clean up & its done.
Then again, I love looking around knowing we did it all.

We do it for both reasons, probably more for financial reasons since DH is not incredibly handy, but he is learning.
Right now, we are putting a deck on the back of the house and my brother has been helping alot. We are probaby saving about $1200 by doing it ourselves.

a mix for us - we do like the satisfaction. But I will say if we were very wealthy I would hire people and maybe just leave the garden for myself to do

We do it ourselves because it saves a lot of money and with some things we feel we will be more precise then someone just trying to get the job done. (Especially with painting)

DH enjoys it and that is the main reason. He has done things that we would not have been able to afford but that is just an added benefit.
