Re: Do you consider fruit snacks candy?
I absolutely do think they're candy, only worse, they're like crack! I swear my kid would live on them if she could. I stopped buying them and giving them to her a year ago because I felt there was no reason in the world to give them to her on a regular basis.

Yes and they are worse than candy for your teeth!
This!! We stress to our patients anything that dissolves quickly(like chocolate) is much better than sticky stuff. Parents read "fruit" in the name and think it's ok.....nope just as crappy...

Re: Do you consider fruit snacks candy?
Fruit snacks like fruit rollups and welch's fruit snacks - no.
We never give DS candy. He gets those fruit snacks once or twice a week. I don't consider it candy. It isn't!

Re: Do you consider fruit snacks candy?
I dont consider them "candy" but I try to avoid them (for myself) because of how bad they are for your teeth!

I consider them teeth destroyers. Avoid like the plague. This goes beyond just no. There is no occasional ok for me on this, no moderation, it is a banned substance.
ditto.
I even stopped giving him raisins/craisings, and when I do I brush his teeth right after!!!!!
as a dental professional I can say this is great advice! Baby teeth are MUCH softer than adult teeth so they decay easier. When a child's adult molars first come in they usually have very deep grooves which make for a great spot for sticky things to hang out. Having sticky sugar from candy or raisins hanging out for hours in between brushing creates an extremely cariogenic situation in the child's mouth. There is very little healthy nutrition in fruit snacks or raisins to to outweigh the risks of tooth decay. Fruit juices, even the all natural kind should not be given in bottles or sippy cups except on rare occaisions & always 2/3 watered down. We say in dentistry "eat your fruit, don't drink it"

Re: Do you consider fruit snacks candy?
I don't consider them candy but I don't give them to DS much anymore. Ever since the dentist told me that these bad boys can do more damage to teeth then candy. If DS gets them, I didn't give it, my ILs or mother did.

Re: Do you consider fruit snacks candy?
I don't consider them candy but I know they are no better than candy. DS is 3 and has never had them simply because of the teeth trouble they can cause.

Re: Do you consider fruit snacks candy?
This is a great question! I never thought about this. I never considered fruit snacks to be candy. I don't know what I thought they were but not candy. I buy little bags of fruit snacks (individual portions) and DS takes a pack maybe once a week (more often 2-3 times a month). DS #2 has never eaten them.

Re: Do you consider fruit snacks candy?
Are they candy? No. But they are just as bad as candy (or worse) and have so little nutritional value that they might as well be candy.
There are much better 'snack' alternatives out there that you can give children - like an actual fruit rather than fruit-flavored snacks, which is really what these are.
