If you want to know what the average person pays for an engagement ring you don't ask New Yorkers. Everything here is "bigger" and "better". JMO.

I understand what you are saying - but, I want to know the average in relation to my world and everyday surroundings - which is New York - so, asking New Yorkers is perfect to me.

Exactly! It is called LIF as in Long Island, NY.

I'm a bit confused as to the point of this post. To compare rings? To see how much money one would spend in order to better "show their love"? I'm lost as to the rationale behind this poll.

Money posts, ring posts... all potential drama Chat Icon It's getting old IMHO

Wow, why does it mean I'm starting drama? I was curious b/c on the other diamond thread a lot of people were making comments that basically suggested that spending more than $4,000 was really a large amount - and it made me curious to see, especially being that prices for diamonds have sky-rocketed so much - what a lot of people on here actually spent. I mean, these things are really expensive so I wondered how many had paid a lot more and if that was the "norm". It was just curiosity - not drama and I made a poll to avoid anyone having to comment whatsoever - they just had to, if they wanted, click a box and it would remain anonymous. To suggest otherwise just isn't very nice.

then don't participate...that is simple Chat Icon

Thank you!

Esp considering I made it a POLL for that very reason. I didn't want to make anyone feel uncomfortable by having to state what it was in order to participate.

I think this post was started because of the other thread where a poster was trying to help her friends boyfriend get a ring within his budget and prices and other criteria were being discussed.

I'm happy someone understood! Chat Icon Trust me - I'm not like that! It just got me thinking - I think too much - that is my problem hahahaa Chat Icon

Dani already told us her ring was "Very expensive" on the rebate post

I'm kinda confused as to the relevance of this but regardless - "very expensive" is a relative term - to one person $1,000 could be very expensive.

Re: Diamond Spinoff (With Poll):

I got my answer:

$4,500 - $6,500 21 19.27%
$6,500 - $8,500 14 12.96%
$8,500 or Higher 41 37.96%

The majority of people do spend $4,500 or more - which is ALL I wanted to know - I just wanted to know what the average person, living in our area, spends - b/c I always figured that it was this case - and wanted to see if what I had always figured was correct.

Not that there is ANYTHING wrong with spending less - I was just curious to see b/c diamonds can get so pricey.

Re: Diamond Spinoff (With Poll):

i know how much my DH spent and its no one's business but our own.

it doesnt matter to me the amount. it matters to me that he picked it out for me to show our commitment to each other. one of my stone's isnt perfect and the jeweler offered to give me a brand new ring but i said absolutely not. i would never part with the ring he proposed to me with, it has too much sentimental value. and to me sentimental value is worth more than dollar value.

But, because it's insured I do know how much he paid for it and what it's appraised at....it's a high quality sapphire, which is what I asked for.

I'm not a big jewelry person, I wouldn't feel comfortable wearing something extraordinarily expensive, and I have tiny, tiny hands, so my husband did exactly what I would have wanted.

He gave me the most beautiful .75 solitaire that was expensive, but not out of this world, and then spent double that amount on a 10-day engagement trip to ski in the Swiss Alps. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Obviously I know LIF consists mostly of New Yorkers. Just wanted to point out that the we are not the average when it comes to engagement rings. But as long as she only cares about what people on LIF are paying and people in her world are than it really doesn't matter.

How many times have we had this on LIW?

if you don't like the poll, don't participate. We're a community of women who have gotten engaged and/or married within the past several years, engagement rings are a hot topic. If this were on the parenting board or weight loss board I'd feel it was irrelevent, but there's been a lot of talk about engagement rings. And judging by the amount of people looking at this thread, people are curious.

I'm actually surprised to see that $8500+ is such a popular answer! Chat Icon

I think people were saying that paying over $4k was a lot because his budget was $4K and we all told her he actually COULD get what he wanted for that price, and didn't have to spend $6K.

I don't know specifically what FH paid for my ring, but I have an idea/think I know..only because I heard his parents screaming at him, about how could you spend $X on a ring... Chat Icon

honestly its not a question of particpating or not---early on if you notice--it started...but never quite toook off like it usuallly does (perhaps cause so many people were using that popcorn icon and saying how this topic can bring up drama)....when some people were talking about their rings and diamonds---they started making comments such as "well i have a smaller diamond in my e-ring...but its a HIGH quality diamond.....girls with big diamonds...bigger isn't always better...just cause its a big diamond doesn't mean its good quality" or mentioning that knowing people who had big diamonds got divorced vs. someone who had a smaller inexpensive one didn't.

i think what happens with these threads is that people say things and throw it out there....and don't realize how it sounds or how it can offend others. THAT was what i was talking about when i said this thread ends up causing drama. cause when people start participating--they start saying things that might seem as though you are knocking on someone else's stuff. and yes i know that if you love your diamond you shouldn't care what others think---but lets be real---sometimes you do. (not talking about me--just in general)

that was what i was meaning....not sure about anyone else

me too.

but I know how much it cost, b/c we picked out the stone and the setting together.

sadly, my beloved blue was lost on the beach in Hawaii last December...but she is fondly remembered. Chat Icon Chat Icon

and for what it's worth, my question on the other thread was why this particular person would go over his particular budget.

if you have the money to spend $15,000 on a ring, go right ahead. but to go in DEBT over it...when houses, children, vacations etc are just waiting around the corner for you to begin your new life...it just didn't make sense to ME.

this is actually one of the reasons i wanted to ask and make the poll - b/c i had a feeling it was going to be a very popular answer- not b/c we think we are "hot rocks" lol buying big rings - but mainly b/c the prices of diamonds have really gone up A LOT in the past few years and it is becoming more and more $$ to buy diamonds.

Yeah, but most of us have been here long enough to know and accept this.

I love the big ring vs. high quality debate! It's just a amtter of opinion but people get so heated. In the end it could be a cracker jack ring, if that's what's meaningful to you and FH, that's what counts. People need to not get offended. I think I'm one of the few people in my family with a ring under 2.0 carats... But I <3 my ring, and my FH, so it doesn't matter at all to me. Love is more sparkly than a 3 carat flawless, D color diamond.

And besides people are aways comparing stuff, cars computers, handbags, etc. We're a materialistic society, and I think this is amplified 100000x on LIF.

I think it's more than that. I think people's expectations are too high. It seems to be the norm that you have to get over a carat, you have to get platinum, you have to have this, you have to have that, where in other parts of the country that's not really the case. I also think that LIF is probably a wealthier subset of people on LI also.

My best friend (bless her heart) has a boyfriend who is a little younger and for whatever reason still in college. She claims it's "not worth it" if an engagement ring costs under $10K, and she said it HAS to be from Cartier, because Cartier is better. I tried explaining gem certification and that a VVS1 F excellent cut or whatever is the SAME whether you get it from Cartier or Zales, she is convinced that Cartier is better.

This is why sometimes I want to smack my best friend. Chat Icon

I also tried explaining that a ring that costs well under $10K can appraise for over $10K. She wants it to COST $10K. I guess I should trade in my ring...it's just a piece of junk to her Chat Icon

Most appraisals are over inflated because the average person doesn't have their jewelry reappraised every few years. No jeweler is going to sell a 15K-20K diamond for 10K, unless they're related to you. Chat Icon
