Diamond Spinoff (With Poll):

Just curious... with the prices of diamonds being as crazy as they are I am wondering how much does the average person spend on a diamond ring? I am not shocked by prices at all - b/c things are so expensive these days - so, to me, spending $6,000+ on a ring seems "standard" b/c diamonds can be so much money.

So, how much did your SO spend? (I guess we have to try and factor in time if it was a long time ago). I made a poll incase some people don't feel comfortable posting it.

My ring is an heirloom from DH's grandmother ... we had the center stone re-set, and did add side-stones to it ... but those stones are not overly large b/c the center stone wasn't and that would look silly! Chat Icon

He could not have given me a more precious or priceless ring. Chat Icon

Re: Diamond Spinoff (With Poll):

it was in the 5 figure range, although i wont give the exact cost. i think that the publicity of rich/celebrity rings def contributes to ppl wanting bigger and bigger. in general, it seems americans are working for a supersized lifestyle.

eta it seems that the rings get bigger with each generation, regardless of the increased cost of diamonds

Mine was in the 5 figures as well. I don't know the exact cost because it was a gift but he brought my mom with him for her opinion and that's what she told me.

We had no money when we got engaged and I still love my ring AND we are still together after almost 15 years of marriage.
Can't say that for many couples that have the HUGE rings that are expected now.

why cant couples who had money when they got engaged be happy as well? just because someone appreciates/receives a large engagement ring, does not necessarily mean they wont make it to a 15 year mark in their marriage.

If you want to know what the average person pays for an engagement ring you don't ask New Yorkers. Everything here is "bigger" and "better". JMO.

Mine was in the five figures too. It is just about 2 carats and it was hand picked by my DH and father. They searched for all the diamonds that make my engagement ring (center stone and two diamonds on each side of it) and got the absolute best quality for the money. Bigger does not necessarily mean better, lots of girls don't realize that there is so much more that goes into a diamond to make the beauty of it last forever. You can pay a cheap amount for a huge diamond, but years from now it will be yellow and foggy.

I have no idea how much he spent nor do I want to know. Frankly I do not think it is my business to know.

I do, however, know how much it was appraised for. It is on a rider on our renter's insurance and that is one of the bills I pay. I know that he did not pay what it was appraised for - he's smart like that. We both know reputable people in wholesale jewelry and diamonds. All he had to do was choose which dealer to work with.

I never said that but everyone seems to be so impressed by a large diamond. Everyone always wants to see the engagement ring. Mine was not big and yes, I was embarassed for awhile when others had larger rings but I learned through the years that love is not equal to the size of the diamond.

Well I can tell you that here in MI this is avergae. I took the poll and I can tell you that the 8500+ is NOT normal here. In fact until I started on LIW I would have never guessed regular people had such elaborate rings. They are beautiful, but not something I see normally. I would tread lightly with the KY comment.....I know it rubbed me wrong, but that it wasn't ment to. What I see from the LIW board is the exception not the norm for most.

My DH got mine from a good friend of my dad's who is a diamond dealer. He paid about 1/3rd of the amount that my stone was appraised at.
