Re: Diamond Spinoff (With Poll):
IMO - it's all a matter of personal preference - there's no right or wrong when it comes to large diamonds vs. smaller diamonds.
i've seen some stones that (according to the owner), were VERY pricey - upwards of $15k - that weren't impressive AT ALL... immediately i think, okay, they got robbed
then i've seen other stones less pricey, but comparable in size, and were absolutely GORGEOUS it all depends on the 4 c's of course

I got his grandmother's diamond ring, in its original setting.
Priceless.

I found the actual statistics on the average price of engagement ring:
$3,044 (Bride's Millenium Report) $2,982 (Bride's Magazine) $2,909 (Modern Bride, as cited in Weddings for Dummies) $3,576 (Conde Nast Bridal Group) $3,165 (Modern Bride Magazine) $2,807 (National Bride Service)
These prices are not from NY. Maybe this is how they roll in KY.
wow quite rude........IMHO.........and does price really matter?

I do not see anything wrong with saying that you want a ring from say, Tiffany's or Cartier or a ring of a certain quality. It depends on how that is said and whether you really mean that you would turn down the proposal. My DH knew that I wanted a ring from a particular designer, not because I have to go touting a name, but because I love their workmanship. I have had people tell me that we got ripped off because we could have gotten a knockoff in the jewelry district. I have also had people tell me that they saw the same ring elsewhere. They don't notice the differences but I do. My ring was within the range that he wanted to spend. I don't think I was wrong to communicate what I wanted. I do think it is rude for people to tell me where my DH should have gotten a ring.
This is how I feel. I picked out 3 rings from 3 designers that I like. I wanted those settings for particular reasons. I did not want knock offs. I plan to wear my e-ring for the rest of my life and I wanted something I loved and luckily DH ended up picking my #1 choice.

With my friend it was all about the $$$ and status. It was not that she wanted something you could only get at Cartier aside from the name. And the point is in her case, her boyfriend is in college, as in undergrad..no way could he afford that ANY time soon

I don't think it;s rude. Whatever anyone's personal ring cost, i don't think those are the average prices in the NYC metro area.

I agree that your friend is wrong. What I was telling my DH I wanted was within his range. I am still mesmerized by a ring that I saw at Cartier that was $110,000 but it's not like I told my DH to go and get it for me!!!! Incidentally, I loved that more than the ring in the next case that was even more $$, so what do I know? Some of the rings at Cartier have their own security guards!!!
