Debating switching peds. (updated).
Edited- so I did end up calling to switch today. Yesterday a friend of mine said she waited in the office for two hours!! Insane. Right away when I called the new place I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to get my DD a well visit appointment for Monday....like shocked they even gave me the option lol... we will see how it goes, I just hope this new doctor doesn't get too busy like the old practice. Thanks for all the input.

Re: Debating switching peds. WWYD?

I am debating switching pediatricians for a few reasons, I guess there are pros/cons to both so i'm not sure if I should switch.
My current ped is a mile from where I live, has an on call line for emergencies or urgent questions you want to ask the doctors after hours, has multiple doctors that i have been happy with whoever i see so i don't mind whose schedule they can fit my kids into... Cons (which is why I am thinking of switching) are that it seems tough to get well visit appointments until months later (although I mostly look for appointments after 3pm) and sometimes the wait in the office can be long
One of the doctors from this practice left and started her own practice about a 15 min drive away. My sister switched there and so far she seems happy, she said the wait time is less and getting a well visit scheduled is no problem (unless at the end of August which makes sense). The only cons for me are that there is only this one doctor and a nurse practitioner in the office and so i'm worried the scheduling may not be as flexible like if i call the same day for a sick visit.
WWYD?
Personally, I'd just call earlier for well visits. I know when our peds calendar opens up and I start calling about a week before then daily to make sure I get an appt when I want it.

Personally, I would stick with the larger practice that has more options for sick visits and emergencies. Well visits can be scheduled many months in advance to eliminate having to wait for an appointment- most offices open up scheduling 3-6 months in advance for well visits.

Personally the cons do not outweigh the pros. if your overall happy but have time restrictions on well visits I would call as early as possible to make them. If its a well visit then there isnt any urgency in getting them. I wouldnt have an issue with waiting for those.
In terms of wait times to see the actual dr for well visits, when your on the phone with the staff ask when is typically a slower time for the dr.
A great dr that you trust and is always available is so hard to find I wouldnt personally give mine up for that con list.

Good points. I guess my DD seems to get sick every time a well visit approaches which is why I find myself in this situation of not being able to get one rescheduled lol. But I will try to stick it out for now and see what happens. Thanks!

I think we may have been in the same practice and I switched to the single Doctor. I live down the block from the original group practice, but the wait time was absurd, I have only been seeing nps lately, and it's impossible to get an appointment even during the summer when I'm off. I called Friday for my daughters 2 year old we'll visit with the single dr, and we're going Wednesday, no problem at all
Eta: if it's the same doc, I also like that she's now affiliated with lij

This. I wouldn't switch if the only issue was scheduling. Just like others have mentioned, u can call ahead. If u need to reschedule due an emergency visit, maybe they can accommodate u and give u a sooner app considering u had an app already?

I think all of us are/were at the same practice.
I really like the doc that opened her own practice but I can see that as her office grows, I think the wait time will too.
I only make well visits with a specific doctor in the group practice and lately I haven't had any issues with scheduling.
As for sick appointments, I will take whichever Dr I can get but I don't like seeing the NP's.
One day my son needed to be seen and I was hoping he could see the doctor that I prefer but she didn't have any appointments. So I made an appointment with another doctor - who I also like - when the doctor I prefer found out we were coming in she stayed later to see my son. For that, I don't think I will switch practices as long as she is still there.

Yes it is that group practice you are thinking of lol... evrythngforareason good to know that you are able to get an appt at the new place relatively quickly! I am still waiting for a call back from the appointment scheduler at the group place.
nraboni- Thats good you actually get in with a specific doctor there.... the past few times my kids have only ever seen the PA. For both sick and well visits. She is nice but it just makes me feel like they are SO busy that they can ever only squeeze the kids in with the PA.

I think you might be happy at the new practice for now but as she gets more patients and is busier it will be the same issues as the other practice.
Just call for appts earlier.

Based on what you wrote, I would be staying with my current practice.

I wouldn't switch. I'd find out when they open their calendar for the month you need and make sure to call then so you have an easier time making the day and time you want.

Debating switching peds. (updated).
Good Luck and let me know how it goes with the new office. If I ever have any issues with the current office or if the Doc I like leaves then I will probably switch to the new office.
