WWYD - switching peds (UPDATE)
So if you missed it, here is my other post
wwyd
eta - I plan to give him the benefit of the doubt and speak to him but I am just SO upset over this
I am upset at myself for not doing my research FIRST but am so thankful that the pharmacist caught this
UPDATE -
So the nurse called me before and left me a message that Dr.G had a 1/2 day today but she was going to reach out to one of the other doctors.
She then called me back and said that the other doctor said it is not something that they prescribe ALL the time but it is safe to use if given in the correct dosage (the dosage on the script was for 1/4 tsp (1/2 the normal children's dosage)
I then told her what I read online and she said it is up to me, that I do not have to give the meds to her (no sh!t, right?)
I do not know how I feel about this, I think if the FDA says it is not safe for children under 6, that means it should NOT be prescribed....
the nurse said that is the only option for a cold medicine as OTC are not used until they are at least 4....
she also mentioned that respiratory issues are more common amongst children with breathing problems
She said they plan to give Dr.G miki's chart and have him call me tomorrow
I am still really ****** and am seriously considering switching to a smaller practice, I will have to sleep on it

Re: WWYD - switching peds
If I loved everything else about that DOCTOR, I'd certainly wait to hear what he had to say, and to express my disappointment. However, I think I'd be researching and second guessing everything from that point.
If I loved the PRACTICE, but was ambivelent about the DR...I'd probably still speak to him, and I'd maybe speak to another DR in the practice and run a "would you give this medicine to a child this age" general question by him/her...depending on answers, I might consider switching DR's within the practice...but I think this would be the hardest option.
If I was ambivelent about both the Dr. AND the practice, and not necessarily in love with either...I'd probably look for another Practice...
Good Luck and I'm sorry you're going through all this!

I like the doctor, I have never had any complaints....it is a very big practice which I am not thrilled with though
thanks, I plan to talk to him, if he calls me back
the receptionist made it seem like talking directly to him would be a hassle

Re: WWYD - switching peds
I would switch peds b.c I would be concerned that it wasn't an isolated incident and would have to always worry when it comes to dosages and new meds that he/she would prescribe.
I would however STILL speak to the ped and want to know why it was recommended and prescribed and hear their reasoning.

I pretty much agree all around! And if is is a "hassle" to actually speak to a doctor as they've mentioned to you, then I'd probably be finding a new doctor!

I would still switch. I mean, will you ever be comfortable with this doctor again??? Or will you always be second guessing them?

Re: WWYD - switching peds (UPDATE)
If you are really bothered by it (which I think you are) then switch. I have only been living in NJ for 2.5 years and am on my 3rd ped. The last time I switched was because I called for a sick visit the same day. They gave me an opening right after everyone came back from lunch. I waited an hour between the waiting room and examining room to have the doc stay with me for 5 minutes. After that I was done. This was a group practice. Now I got a small group, 3 doctors and so far have been really happy.
