WWYD - switching formula question

So, DD has been having problems with her formula. She cries through every bottle and she is just farting away in pain from the time I start the bottle, usually to 30 minutes after.

We went from the regular Similac to Similac Soy. The Soy helped, but she is still in pain so the pediatrician gave us Nutramigen to try.

I've been giving it to her since yesterday and she seems worse on it than on the soy. And she doesn't seem to want to take her bottle at all now.

I tasted it and it is GROSSChat Icon No wonder the kid doesn't want it.

Would you just stop with the Nutramigen now or finish the 3-4 days worth as suggested by the pediatrician?

My gut says to just go back to the soy since she was better on it than both the regular and the Nutramigen but I know it can often take a few days for the formula switch to work.

Also, she had shots yesterday, so I wonder if her increased fussiness and lost of appetite is due to that and not necessarily the switch in formula. Which makes me think, keep trying the Nutramigen.

So, wwyd, keep her on the Nutramigen for another couple of days or go back to the Soy?

Thanks!

Re: WWYD - switching formula question

I'd keep her on the nutramigen for a few more days.

When I switched DD to soy she did better initially but then she would scream in pain when she had to poop... I took her to an allergist and she was totally allergic to it - even more than milk. So I have a personal with soy since then and I won't give it to my kids at all... we ended up using Alimentum which worked.

The only time DD ever totally refused her bottles was when she was sick, so I would stick it out a few more days and if there's no improvement talk to the ped again. Chat Icon This is the worst part of infancy IMO.

DS hated Nutramigen too - he did well on Similac Sensitive though (but, now it has lactose in it - at the time it was lactose free).

My DD hated Nutramigen as well. It made her more gassy, constipated and irritable so we only stuck with it for 4-5 days instead of giving it the full week. It was clear in that timeframe that it wasnt the formula for her.

As a ped dietitian.

What are the symptoms for you switching? I would stay away from soy formula's if you can b/c they are no longer recommended by the AAP, and there are much better alternatives out there.

I have always seen good results with Gentlease. It is milk based, with reduced lactose and partially hydrolyzed proteins, so they are easier to digest. It is a formula for babies with gas/fussiness issues.

If that doesn't work I usually go to nutramigen. No hydrolysate taste good b/c the it is predigested. BUt the benefit is that it is predigested so its easier for baby to digest.

Some babies that cry through feedings have reflux issues. In which case Gentlease or AR will work (AR has added rice starch to keep formula down, and decreases the burning in throat that causes pain.)

Stick it out for 48h with nutramigen, if no change let me know and I will help.

My boys did the exact same thing when we were told to swtich to Nutramigen...they HATED it! They were so fussy and just didnt want their bottles.

I didnt even finish what the Doc told me too. I just switched back to their old formula. I would just use your instincts...you know your children best and if you feel its bothering them more than go back.

I second Gentlease. It really helped my son, who had similar issues in the beginning.

So, I had DD on the Enfamil for 48 hours and she is worse than she's ever been. The past 2 nights she went from sttn to waking 4-5 times (calmed by her paci) and then once to feed but screaming her head off (she usually just fusses when she is hungry).

I'm at a loss. How can a baby go from being a great newborn to having formula issues at 3 mos?

her symptoms are that she cries through the whole bottle, pushes the nipple out with her tongue and stiffens her whole body, kicking her legs straight out.

She can only be comforted if I burp her upright on my shoulder standing and once she is calm, if I lay her flat on her back. She does not seem to like any kind of bent sitting position.

She is also trying to pass gas as she drinks her bottle and she cries as she is pushing gas out.

I'm just not sure why this is happening now when she didn't seem to have issues when she was just born . . .Chat Icon

I hate seeing my baby in pain like this and struggling with her bottles.
