If you don't want to go, don't go. Tell them it's not a good time for you and you would be happy to celebrate on another day and time that works for you.

The dinner was MY idea, why do I have to be the person inconvenienced and have a battle with my husband?

I guess I don't understand why you feel inconvenienced. If you are planning a dinner with family, everyone tends to have to work it around everyone else and the person least flexible is usually the one that plans are being made to accomondate for. In this case, it's a grandchild because the child is the least flexible. Why does it matter that you are eating early...is it really that big of a deal? If I were in your shoes, and I have been since I am the last to have a baby and have close to 20 nieces and nephews, I would be looking forward to having dinner with EVERYONE. You don't have to care for the child and your feeling may change once you have a baby and realize that by 9 pm, you want to be in bed - not out to dinner.

People who can't hire sitters tend to coddle their children. Children need independance and vice versa.

Huge generalization.

I have NO ONE outside of my parents and sister to babysit for me in the evening, and I'm not hiring a stranger off Craig's List or anywhere else for that matter. The risks of that FAR outweigh a night out.

YET, my children manage to be quite independant. My husband and I both work full time, my oldest goes to pre-school part time 3 days a week and both kids are at a baby sitter's house 2 hours a day 5 days a week.

If you were invited to a family dinner with us, it would be no later than 6pm, it would most likely be at a high end restaurant (we love fine dining!) and my children(ages 2 and 3) would most likely (but not definitely) be extremely well behaved. Is it your idea of a great night out? I guess not, but for us, sometimes it's the only way.
We have plenty of friends and neighbors who would help us in a pinch if it were an emergency or a situation where we couldn't bring out children, but to burden them with our 2 on top of their own for a family dinner is selfish and an incredible imposition, IMO.

Sorry if you disagree. I didn't imply one needs to bring a total stranger from craig's list into their home. What I was trying to say was that parents who shield their children from others, and people tend to put the child before the marriage--tend to have children that are more dependant than those who don't.

There are hundreds if not thousands of qualified individuals out there that can take specialize in child care. Most people i know hire sitters.

I would not impose on my family to be sole sitters of my children. That's ridiculous.

Kudos for bringing your children to fine dining restuarants. My parents did that with us too and we were never problem children. But when they wanted time alone, they left us home.

does your child go to preschool? b/c my sister used to work at a preschool and babysit many of the childern from there- it's a great place to look- and find experinced people, who already know your child

my sister did expect more then $5 an hour- since she was certified in CPR, and was in grad school- but she was more then willing to babysit on a saturday night to add to her income

I have to say, it annoys me too.

not if it's on occassion, b/c sometimes sh1t happens when you have a kid.

but I have a particular relative that WILL NOT under ANY circumstances, pay a baby sitter for a night out.

she uses me and sometimes her brother. and if WE are all going with, she brings the kids, AND it's early.

nothing against the kids whom I love DEARLY, but it's puts a BIG damper on a fun NIGHT (as in, after the sun sets) out.

Could NOT agree more. There is a time and place for everything. To have your child dictate your life makes you and your spouse change for the child's life.

Your child comes into the world abnd into YOUR life--not the other way around.

I feel there is nothing more precious than a mother and father having some quality, adult time with other adults.

People who can't hire sitters tend to coddle their children. Children need independance and vice versa.

and here comes the fire storm.....

There is life beyond your kids, it's called marriage and it needs to be nurtured or all you're doing is living for your children and your marriage will suffer.

True, but I also think there is a tendency in this country to do TOO much WITHOUT your kids, and that parents who want a cohesive unit, are looked down upon, whereas it's the norm in other countries. I love going to Israel, and you know why? Everytime we went out to eat at a restaurant or cafe, even the nicest of restaurants, at all varieties of hours, they are teeming with *families*, not a bunch of adults who feel that there has to be such a divide between "adult" time and "family" time. Personally, in my opinion, I think that's part of the problem with this country and why families, and family values, are becoming less and less cohesive, and less and less important.

You don't get it, we are going to a $100 per person restaurant. This is a place where a child is not only not expected, I'l go out on a limb and say they are frowned upon.

If I was having dinner there and saw a toddler seated next to me, I'd be upset. This goes back to the thread about eating out with kids, and I really don't want to go there.

I'm not asking you to understand my situation at all, just to realize that not everyone brings their kids everywhere.

I just have to jump back in and say that what you "think" you will do when you have a child will not necessarily be what you end up doing once that bundle arrives.

I know because I was one of the ones who said before my DD arrived that I would hire sitters and that it was very important to me to have time with my DH but after hiring three local teenage sitters and not having success with any of them its not as easy as it seems.

So as one poster said I hope you non moms will visit this topic once you have kids and you might be very surprised at how diffrent you feel thenChat Icon

I think this is (surprise surprise) getting really off the mark.

it's not about NEVER going out without your kids...at all.

it's about 2 things

1) a woman that only uses 1 person to mind her kids, and there is no if ands or buts about getting someone else

2) that SOMETIMES, for a SPECIAL occassion, FANCY restaurant, it IS, to some of us, best of leave your children home.

I also fully intend to take my kids out, so I can learn them a thing or two about behaving in public.

and more than that, it's a FED UP posters VENT. we all have people in our lives that we feel take advantage in one form or another...this is her person, and this is the M.O.

I'm not disagreeing with that at all - that's exactly why my husband and I are in the throes of disciplining a toddler going through a serious case of the terrible-two's (see my posts on Parenting). We don't want to be the kind of parents who go out to fancy restaurants, vacations, etc., while leaving our children at home with a sitter, and that's why we are *trying* to teach our daughter about what is, and is not, acceptable behavior in public.

If you cannot discipline your child, don't bring them to a fancy dinner with others. Or, if they start acting up, take them out of the restaurant. But, by all means, if you can discipline your child, and they can behave, there's no reason why the parents should be looked down upon for wanting to bring their children, and asking for a simple accomodation.

You are right--it probably is a lot harder than I know. But I am still the non baby one in a circle of my older friends and I see how they try to do the child-life/ adult-life balance and I look up to their method. They take time for themselves. I think if one didn't, they would go insane.

I get it...it's an expensive restaurant. What I don't understand is why the very presence of a child in an expensive restaurant would be upsetting. The mere presence of a child doesn't mean that the child is going to misbehave or disrupt your dinner in anyway. The loud, obnixious guy on the other side of you may be more offensive.

I just look at it differently and don't see what the big deal is. To me, it's spending time with people I love, care about and enjoy being with so who cares whoelse is there or where we are. It's being together that counts. There are far greater things for me to get upset about then a situation like this. Each to their own and this is JMO.

Try to enjoy what it is and not let it cause you too much upset or problems with DH.

Re: WHo has dinner at 5:30 on a Saturday night?!?!?!?!!?

I'm not a mom nor in your shoes but I think it's probably less about the reservation time and more about the fact that your SIL takes advantage of your MIL for all babysitting activities.

But, just stepping back for a minute, I'm sure that your FIL wants to go to this steakhouse. But maybe, at the same time, he doesn't care about the 5:30 pm reservation because he would just rather have his whole family there.

You have a right to be annoyed that the plans changed and you have to be incovienenced. But at the end of the day, it's his b-day and if he doesn't mind it then I think no one should. Regardless if it's becasue your SIL take advantage.

I treat birthdays like weddings - it's his day, his way. And whether he is quietly consenting or outright saying he wants 5:30, he is still ok with it. And I think, just this once, you should be ok with it too.

HTH. I really understand your frustration! Chat Icon

While I don't agree on every point, this is a situation that has been wearing on me for a long time. Some people know the back story, but I really don't want to get into it. Just know that this is not an isolated incident and I do have some credibility which goes back to before I got married.
I have been trying to let things roll off my back and sometimes things just crop up that set me off again. I guess the only thing I can do is do things differently.

Thanks.

Gina....based on your OP, it seemed that you were upset that dinner reservations were made earlier than what you prefer because of your sil's son...My response is based on that~

I know Ro, thanks! It does go deeper though.

We always eat between 5:30 and 6:30.

I hate eating later than that.

I'm lucky if either one of us even leaves the office by 6:30.

Any day we eat before 8pm is a good day for us.

when we go out, we usually go before 6. no we don't have kids yet, but we generally go to chili's or fridays type of places.

have you been out with the kid before? do you know that she will behave awfully or are you just annoyed that she will be there?
