I agree. I think the grandparents want their grandchildren there.

We do.

That's what happens when you have a child - 5:30pm Sat nite dinners... hard to find a sitter... and sometimes you just don't feel like paying an extra $40 (the sitter) just so you can go out for dinner...makes ya feel old and boring for sure... but come back to this thread in about 10 months. When we have parties at our house - we always start them at 5 pm for dinner. That way, you can come early if you want and still get home at a decent hour. Or, you can come later and stay later. We (and our guests) love it!

Re: WHo has dinner at 5:30 on a Saturday night?!?!?!?!!?

That's what we do Chat Icon If my parents are in town and want to go out to eat, they usually like to have my daughter come with us - actually, I find it a little insulting if there's a *family* gathering and anyone would expect to leave my daughter at home - she's family too, isn't she?

Because her bed time is 7:30-8pm, we either have to go early, around 5 or 5:30 to avoid her cranky hour before bed, or go AFTER she has gone to sleep and is with the babysitter, because she can be a challenge when going to sleep, which would push dinner to close to 8/8:30pm. And keep in mind - it can be difficult to find a babysitter you trust.

Me!!!!

I hate eating late - I have actually turned down dinner plans if the couple "needed" to go after 7:30.

It doesn't agree with my body.

Oh, sorry, I guess Iwasn't too clear.

MIL and FIL will be WITH US, it's FIL's birthday so we have to make reservations for 5:30 because the baby has to go to dinner with us and then go to bed.

That's what we do in our family too. Neither sets of parents, nor our siblings seem to mind...in fact the grandparents prefer to have their grandchild there.

Us too. Chat Icon

We've done that in my family, too, but we didn't make the reservations that early. If it's an infant, the baby would just fall asleep in the carrier during dinner, and it was never a problem.

When you have a cranky baby with you @ a restaurant..you are going wish that you chose the earlier reservation!

Does your fil mind?

Rosaria, I totally get the "going out to dinner early with the kids" thing, but this runs a little deeper.

The ONLY babysitter they have is MIL, no one else EVER watches the baby.
If I were in the situation, I would find someone to watch my child, be it my mother or a friend if I had to.

I find it totally rude that a 2 year old is going to a fancy steakhouse with us so I can drop $300+ and not even enjoy myself.
It has nothing to do with a wait, we have reservations. This is not just dinner at Chili's.......

Don't get me wrong, I love my nephew and enjoy spending time with him, but I come from a different school than many. My kids won't have to go everywhere with me. There is a time and place for adults to be just that, adults.

My mother had no parents to rely on when we were born, and she managed to go on vacations without us, dinners with friends, and work full time. Where there's a will, there's a way.

And if I'm paying for 1/2 of a really expensive dinner, I want to enjoy myself as well, don't I deserve that?

I have to say, it annoys me too.

not if it's on occassion, b/c sometimes sh1t happens when you have a kid.

but I have a particular relative that WILL NOT under ANY circumstances, pay a baby sitter for a night out.

she uses me and sometimes her brother. and if WE are all going with, she brings the kids, AND it's early.

nothing against the kids whom I love DEARLY, but it's puts a BIG damper on a fun NIGHT (as in, after the sun sets) out.

Could NOT agree more. There is a time and place for everything. To have your child dictate your life makes you and your spouse change for the child's life.

Your child comes into the world abnd into YOUR life--not the other way around.

I feel there is nothing more precious than a mother and father having some quality, adult time with other adults.

People who can't hire sitters tend to coddle their children. Children need independance and vice versa.

and here comes the fire storm.....

Huge generalization.

I have NO ONE outside of my parents and sister to babysit for me in the evening, and I'm not hiring a stranger off Craig's List or anywhere else for that matter. The risks of that FAR outweigh a night out.

YET, my children manage to be quite independant. My husband and I both work full time, my oldest goes to pre-school part time 3 days a week and both kids are at a baby sitter's house 2 hours a day 5 days a week.

If you were invited to a family dinner with us, it would be no later than 6pm, it would most likely be at a high end restaurant (we love fine dining!) and my children(ages 2 and 3) would most likely (but not definitely) be extremely well behaved. Is it your idea of a great night out? I guess not, but for us, sometimes it's the only way.
We have plenty of friends and neighbors who would help us in a pinch if it were an emergency or a situation where we couldn't bring out children, but to burden them with our 2 on top of their own for a family dinner is selfish and an incredible imposition, IMO.

I hear you, and in some ways agree, BUT

My mother's parents died young, my father's parents, 1 died and the other wasn't around. My mom is an only child. There was NO ONE to rely on but a few friends and my godmother.

My mom still went on vacations, dinners, worked and lived an adult life. She wasn't a coddler by any means, and I have to say that she really enjoyed her life while we were young.

Her ENTIRE LIFE didn't revolve around us.

It is impossible to say that times have not changed, but when people want to do something, they find a way to do it.

We all have different views and choose to live our lives in a way that we see fit. I respect your way, however, it is not the way I plan to do it.

that's so different then the rest of my inner circle (obviously excluding the person I referenced in an earlier post)

most do each other the favor of minding their children on occasion...you mind my kids tonight, I'll take yours on next Saturday night, etc.

and I highly doubt anyone would suggest hiring a complete stranger from Craig's List. but I know there are hiring procedures for nannies. I intent to follow those same procedurs when finding a suitable babysitter for my most precious of bundles.

and whatever happened to hiring high school students...little Jenny or Johnny from down the street for $10 an hour?

seriously, is that a lost occupation. Have the illegals taken that over too?! Chat Icon Chat Icon (sorry, I couldn't help myself)

Because it's a fancy expensive restaurant!!!! It's not a diner or somewhere where it is the norm to bring a toddler! My FIL would love a night of just adults going out for dinner, everyone is certainly NOT the same.

If I heard we were going to an expensive restaurant for dinner, my first instinct would be, "Gee, I wanna have a good time without kids, I gotta find a sitter".

You'd be surprised about the nanny thing. We went that route, had 1 quit and fired 1, and those were the only ones we could get. Most nannys will not work less than 40 hours/week, which we did not need. And believe it or not, several of my friends haved hired people off Craig's List based on an interview and calling the references THEY provided. I couldn't do that...

As far as teens, PLEASE find me one. There are non in my neighborhood (very very young families in the community). Several coworkers have volunteered their daughters, but I would have to pick them up and drop them off, and non are close. We're talking a 25 minute ride (Smithtown to Huntington) for the closest one, and they do it once and find a social life. Chat Icon

I have to agree with you guys- and as a person who doesn't have childern yet- I can honestly say there is NOTHING worse then trying to enjoy an expensive meal with a child crying or screaming at the resturant- there are times and places for childern- expensive steak houses are not one of them IMO

if Grandpa wants to celebrate his birhday with his grandson- have a BBQ, go to the ground round etc.

My parents went on dates every saturday night when I was little and local teenagers always watched us- we lived and my parents marriage lasted 32 years- (my Mom passed away or they would still be together)
