Daycare and
There must be some extremely well behaved children in that room if she has the time to harp on this issue. Unreal.

Re: Daycare and "Report Cards" Question

So this may be bad, but my attitude about ANYTHING that happens at daycare since she was 8 weeks old (short of, of course, behavior issues, hitting and biting other kids etc) is this- I am paying you guys a SHIT ton of money. A SHIT ton. So don't come to me with BS. I don't even go to these BS "parent teacher conferences" She was 2 years old and they were trying to set that up. Like I have time for that. I work full time. Which is why I pay you guys a grand a month for 3 days a week to watch my kid. Period. End of story. If my kid wants to bang toy pot lids, for the grand a month I am paying you, she better well be allowed to bang every damn pot lid in the class .
If they don't like it- too effing bad.
I'm not paying you to evaluate my child. I'm paying you to watch them.
Ridiculous.
Exactly I agree 100%

Daycare and
If you read her email just for what it is, it's not bad at all. She says encouraging and good things.
She sounds involved as a teacher/day care person. That's what most people dream of, no?
Sounds like he's in great hands, even if she's going overboard in a way
Do you guys ask for progress notifications? Are they guven out to all kids?

Re: Daycare and "Report Cards" Question
Sorry...that's just a little too structured for me for a child who isn't even 2.
But don't listen to me. It's been a long time since my kid was in daycare. Things sure have changed!

Re: Daycare and "Report Cards" Question
I disagree with the idea of appropriate play, as objects can serve as many things, but I feel her email was well intentioned and I think it was her way of maybe backing down from what she said to you in class. ETA: I would not go to director about this.

Re: Daycare and "Report Cards" Question
I agree that I would not bother going to the director with it, but I would ignore it. It's not like he is in 3rd grade and the teacher is concerned with his reading skills or math skills or whatever. He's a baby. He's playing. Their job is to watch him, not analyze him. I don't even dignify those kind of things at daycare with a response. Unless my child is disruptive or hurting other children, I'm not interested in hearing the daycare teacher's analysis. Just watch my kid. I pay enough for that service.

I agree with this. I think its good that they are looking for appropriate behavior. While I agree kids will play with things in many different ways you also want them to learn what pots are used for. I don't take it as her being over the top just maybe looking at it from all sides.
I would never go tot he director for a teacher that cares enough to reach out to parents. In this day we are lucky to find caring people.
My daycare gives progress reports. I am happy to get them as it keeps me informed on his progress and they run the center as a school at at 3 I would rather that then no reports.

I agree
And as a parent of a son with special needs, I would have appreciated the dialogue regarding his lack of appropriate play skills from his daycare teachers when he was a toddler (and was undiagnosed as having special needs then). "Appropriate" meaning playing with the toys the way they were intended to be, not just spinning the wheels on car toys, lining all the toys up, stacking the puzzle pieces rather than completing the puzzles, etc.

I agree with this. At this age appropriate play skills should b emerging (speaking into a toy phone, feeding a dolly, pushing a toy car and saying "vroooom" etc). But pan lids can also be frisbees, musical instruments, etc to an imaginative child and you don't want to stifle that! This teacher sounds very by the book - like she's reading the development charts and taking them very literally. I can see how that is extremely annoying. Any suggestion from a teacher that your child is not developmentally appropriate is going to be very upsetting to a parent, however sweetly its delivered. If your son is appropriate in his play otherwise, I would be very annoyed by the teachers suggestion.

I am confused as to why everyone is jumping down the teacher's throat. I actually didn't think her email was too bad. Is it possible that she is concerned about his play skills? Is he able to be redirected to play appropriately with the pots and pans rather than just spin them? By 21 months, there should be some appropriate play with toys. My 12 month old takes the fork and puts it in his mouth and pretends to eat. He does throw the toys now and then, but he still imitates real play with the kitchen stuff. Could that be what she is concerned about and maybe worded wrong? I personally would be concerned if at 21 months, my child was not engaging in pretend play with objects and was just spinning objects. Not that I am saying your child doesn't though! JMO but I would sit down with the teacher and clarify it better!
I agree. And I'm his mother! So you think I'd be way sensitive.
I see her as very caring and very structured -- she just wants everyone to participate and enjoy everything. I get that. Is it a little too much sometimes? Yes. But I'd rather her care so much and want him to learn like crazy vs. the hands off approach of "if he learns and does well good, if he doesn't and throws everything, whatever"... KWIM? So, it's like I know she's coming from a good place -- I just kind of take it with a grain of salt and realize that her personality is the type to really care about the little things -- where I don't sweat the small stuff and details as much.
And thankfully there is a balance -- because you have teachers there that encourage him to do whatever he wants, there are teachers that encourage him to do arts, some that love music, and assistants as well -- so, it's kind of cool because he gets exposed to all different types of personalities and caregivers. But the best part is they all genuinely care.

Yeah this is how I see it... While I laugh and roll my eyes at it a bit -- I do kind of chalk it up to, hey she really cares so I'm happy!
And I'm not sure -- I know other parents and her have meetings so I'm assuming but I have never asked around the other parents.
I do know that one kid was having a major issue with biting and he almost had to leave the daycare which was totally understandable, common, and something they had to deal with. He was able to work through it and is now doing great, thankfully!

Re: Daycare and "Report Cards" Question
It's my new catch phrase. I don't even know where I got it from. The other day DH and I were at the pool supply store and he said- how much of this chemical do we need? And I said,we need a LOT- we need a shit ton. He says- well should I get the huge tub of it or just the bag? And I said, get the TUB! We need a shit ton!! And the guy behind the counter was laughing at me the whole time!

Re: Daycare and "Report Cards" Question
An Update, of sorts --
I held off on going to the director.
I let the teacher know I spoke with my pediatrician to make sure that his "lack of pretending to play with kitchen stuff" was alright and not a cause for concern. My ped is great, she has a mobile number you can call her on and chat about whatever you are thinking. She actually shared with me a story about her daughter and daycare. Her daughter was about that age and the daycare said she needs to work on her "coping skills" because when she didn't get her way from time to time she had a tantrum. HAHA. Telling a toddler that they need to cope vs. having a tantrum! So I had to laugh. She said a lot of these places are like that.
We had a long discussion about what he is doing -- how, with his toy lawnmower, he pushes it and "mows" and goes "vrooooom" and pretends to put the gas in it... And how with his blocks he stacks them all the way up and then tears the wall he built down... How he takes the cordless phone or my cell and puts it up to his ear and goes HELLOOOOO lolol... That kind of stuff. So, she was like he is appropriately playing with tons of stuff -- he just likes to spin those lids and back when he was in the other room, he used to get applause and attention for doing that from the other teacher... She would encourage his little "performance". So, I think that is why he is doing it sometimes -- to try and get people to give him a little attention.
So, I went to the teacher and discussed all of this and it was a really nice convo.
It still makes me chuckle though.

ETA - I agree and disagree... he does play appropriately MOST of the time, but the pots and pans he bangs... I can clearly remember playing drums on pots and pans and banging them together ... in fact, we did that on New Years Eve every year at midnight. Especially if it's the lids, they kinda look like cymbals, so to bang them together would be appropriate.
I'm glad to hear you went to the teacher first... I think that will be most productive.
