Crape Myrtle question
If you have a Crape Myrtle, does it have any buds on it? We're trying to figure out if ours is dead, since it sure looks like it is. We got it last spring, it had tons of gorgeous flowers at the end of the summer like it was supposed to and now it just looks totally dead. I'm hoping it just hasn't gotten its buds yet but it's not looking too promising . . .

Re: Crape Myrtle question
Mine looks dead also right now. I stripped a little bit of bark the other day to see if it had wick (green). It was so I am assuming that it's just a "late bloomer."

Crape Myrtle question
Our CMs always bloom/leaf late, sometimes mid-end May. Hang in there, they are probably fine. Love them...well worth the wait!

Crape Myrtle question
Crepe Myrtles are one of the last to bud and bloom so they look dead deep into the spring. If you are concerned, scratch a little bit off the bark. If its green under there, it's alive!

Re: Crape Myrtle question
Ours did not bloom the first year after we planted it. It had leaves, but no flowers. The next year we got flowers.
It is not blooming yet this year.

Re: Crape Myrtle question
Just getting the tiniest growth right now. Otherwise looks bare.
Crape Myrtles are so hard to kill. I cut back half of mine in the beginning of July and I still got another bloom out of it

Re: Crape Myrtle question
I thought I heard once that you are supposed to trim down the myrtle to a foot or so out of the ground after each season.
Do any of you trim or cut your Myrtles at the end of season? Or leave them be.
I leave them be; and I'm wondering if I should start pruning. I've had the Myrtle for about 4 years now; and I have yet to see it bud full flower. Got it at Cheap Sams; maybe thats why?

Ours is a tree. It's probably like 7-8 feet tall, so I definitely wouldn't trim it down to a foot. I believe there are Crape Myrtle bushes which might require pruning but I don't know anything about them.
