Crape Myrtle [pic]

I've been waiting to get a good picture of this... This is a Crape Myrtle 'Natchez' that my neighbor has:

Beautiful, isn't it? As if that wasn't enough, the bark peels off and this is what it looks like in winter:

Jen, how is yours doing? Anyone else have a Crape Myrtle that's blooming right now?

Re: Crape Myrtle [pic]

Trish, your neighbors is gorgeous.

Ours is just about bloom.....the whole tree this year. Since we trimmed it up in the early early Spring, it looks awesome so far this year. We have a couple of blooms at the very top already and it looks like every branch this year has a bloom ready to go very very soon. I'll have to take pics of it for you. It's going to look gorgeous this year. So happy we pruned it the way we did. Chat Icon

Can't wait to see it Jen! I'm glad you risked the pruning. It's funny, I used to be afraid to prune things, and now sometimes I *over* prune. I'm going to be cutting all the spent flowers off my Hydrangea soon. Not because I have to, because I want to. Chat Icon

OK, here are the pics! I'm so glad we pruned, because the closer I looked when I was taking these pictures, the more and more that I saw that every branch will have flowers on it this year. Chat Icon It's going to be gorgeous! I'll take more pics when it blooms. I think I'm going to prune my Hydrangea's soon too. I haven't pruned them in three years, so I think I'm going to do it this year and see if the bush gets bigger next year and maybe producers more too. When is the latest you can prune Hydrandeas? August or September?

BEAUTIFUL!
They are my favorite part about NC. They are everywhere here. We have a bunch on our property that we planted. They typically bloom when you get to consistent 90s.

We don't get cold enough for the bark peeling in the winter, that's really pretty!!!!!

Thanks for the pics Jen!

I usually don't prune my Hydrangeas after August. Since they also have cottony scale, I'm going to cut the spent flowers now, give it a little boost so it's not putting any energy into the flowerheads.

We have a good amount of them around the property. A row of white and some fushica and purples ones as well. There are different types of myrtles from trees to bushes. We love them. Here they last from May-November. Kind of smell a little like a lilac too.
ETA: you shoud prune them back in the winter. We do ours every Feb. cut above the nuckle. It depends on how you want them to grow where you want to cut them.

ok, so in a few weeks I guess I'm going to prune my Hydrangea. Chat Icon The flowerheads are doing that change color thing right now and I love the green and pink colors, but they are on their way out for sure.

Did you see that we took the Weeping Cherry down finally? Chat Icon It was gross. It had Cottony Scale all over it and it just wasn't healthy looking. And it came down so easy too. I was pushing on it and that is all it took to get it out of the ground. Chat Icon Poor tree. The previous owners just didn't take care of anything really. But I think taking it down really helped out the other plants in that area. Next are the evergreen bushes in the front of the bed. Then the Japanese Maple can breath better too. Chat Icon

Mine is blooming, but I did some pruning, b/c it's way too tall (passed my second story windows - it's reight in front of the house) I could really reach it well, so I cut off alot. Once the flowers are done, I'm going to resume hacking Chat Icon
