clipping newborn's nails?
Did you file first and then clip?
I know this seems like a silly question but the nurse scared the crap out of me when I had him! She said she clipped her dd's nails and she had to have stiches, saying it traumatized her for life?!? So she told me only to file...his nails are growing like weeds and the filing is just not keeping up with it so he has sharp nails all the time.
Should I just clip now? He is 3 months.
Edited to make sense

Re: clipping newborn's nails?
I clipped DD#1's nails the day we came home from the hospital(they were sooo long) and I CUT HER FINGERTIP so bad. I threw that little nail clipper in the trash. I cried soooo bad, and I will never forget it. I too was scarred. I actually switched to a curved nail scissor.

Same here. Just make sure you pull the skin back on the finger (under the name) so it pulls away from the nail.

Re: clipping newborn's nails?
DD is 3 weeks and I had to cut them twice already! I just use the clippers, this last time I got her skin. She cried, I cried - and then we both got over it, no biggie

Re: clipping newborn's nails?
I file them a few times a week. I also use those hand mits while she sleeps to prevent her from scratching her face.

Re: clipping newborn's nails?
I always clipped but sometimes it would leave a sharp edge and I would file that. Now we clip about every 3-4 days, they grow so fast!
Maybe the nurse cut too soon? When I had DD they told me in the hospital DO NOT cut her nails for at least 1 week

Re: clipping newborn's nails?
I still file DS's nails. I am too scared of cutting his tiny little fingers. I use a small nail scissor on his toe nails though.

Re: clipping newborn's nails?
As weird as it may sound, I bite DS' nails. I think it is just so much easier than filing/clipping. He gives me a hard time every time I try to file them so now I just bite them when he is eating.

DS is 3 weeks and we've clipped his nails about 3 times already! He loves having his hands by his face and often scratches it. Just make sure you pull the skin back.

Filed at first, then found clipping while he was asleep much easier.

Re: clipping newborn's nails?
Ds is almost 10 months old and I clip them. When he was about 1 month old, I clipped the tip of his thumb and went to filing them. That didn't last too long...I am back to clipping them every 3 days and then I file the sharp edges...I sing to him while I do it and he is fine with it...Most of the time anyway...If he fights me, I just wait a little while and try again...

Re: clipping newborn's nails?
DS is almost a year and I always file them. I tried to clip them a couple of times but I always get to scared I'm cutting his finger.
I usually do it if he falls asleep while having his last bottle. Other wise I can't get him to sit still long enough.

Re: clipping newborn's nails?
Ok I am gonna try it then, his nails are just growing super fast and he is scratching himself and me. Filing seems to take forever even though his nails are so tiny!
Thanks everyone

Re: clipping newborn's nails?
I've clipped since DS was 3 weeks. His nails grow too quickly to just file. I clip and then file the corners so they're not sharp.

Re: clipping newborn's nails?
I just clip them - I find it very hard to use a file on her tiny fingers, actually easier to clip. I've only nicked her once or twice and considering how often I do it, that's not bad at all. Also, they've been the teeniest of nicks. I usually have DH distract her now while I do it - that helps. Agree with pp's, make sure you pull back the skin.
Like a pp, MIL also bit DH's nails, but I think that's and couldn't do it.

Re: clipping newborn's nails?
We have never clipped. We got this awesome scissor with a gift set someone gave us at my shower with DS1. I have looked for another one and cannot find it. Somehow it isn't sharp but still cuts the nail. I love it because I'm not scared to use it!

Same here but was told NOT to clip his nails for the first few weeks b/c the skin was attached to them and they would bleed.
