Re: clipping their nails?

I did it right away, like a wk or two wks old. I had my mom do it.

If you are nervous, maybe just wait a bit....put some baby mittens on so he dosent scratch his face.

Re: clipping their nails?

I did it when she was just a few weeks old. I clipped her finger and it started bleeding....I thought she would bleed forever. I tried to hide it from DH, but I couldn't. She didn't even cry...but I was crying because I was the worst mommy in the world.

Now...I do it every few days, usually after a bath when she's winding down for the night.

Re: clipping their nails?

I usually do it when she's sleeping or when I am BF. I've become a pro at it. I was SO scared at 1st, but when you get the hang of it... it's really eaay.

At first I would just snip a corner and peel the rest off, that way I didn't have to really worry about clipping the whole nail.

Re: clipping their nails?

My ped said its very hard... I have been unsuccessful with the baby clipper and the file...

Know what I bought? The block that they use at salons - I was looking at it when getting my nails done one day and thought - I should get this for Cailen - it works the best - its very soft and not too abrasive...

Re: clipping their nails?

I did it when DS was a few days old. He couldn't keep his hands away from his face and was scatching himself. I tried mittens, but he would get them off. I was terrified, but did it while he was asleep and it was no problem.

Re: clipping their nails?

I did them after a few days old. His nails were long. He was scratching himself.
Now that he is older, I do it when he is sitting in his high chair. He actually lets me do his fingers. His toes....that's another story Chat Icon

Re: clipping their nails?

DH filed her nails down yesterday (she's a week old)...I couldn't bring myself to take the clippers to her but she had been scratching her face

The same thing happened to me. I even tried to bandage it...which was hysterical. I cut a band-aide in half but then getting to to stay at the tip of her thumb was impossible.

ETA: Now I only clip her finger and toe nails when she's sleeping. She won't let me do it otherwise.

same here. I still get the thumb by accident sometimes. It's awful. I try to do it when she's distracted by Einstein. It's my least favorite thing to do.

I started right away. It took me a long time because I was so afraid of cutting him but I never did thank God. I did it while he was sleeping.

Yep! That's what we do too.

Now that he's a bit older the nails aren't as soft and filing is easier too.
