Circumcision
I'm not sure what I'm having but the other night I talked to my husband about circumcision if it's a boy. At first he said no and then I told him how it's actually better that way health wise from what I read/heard and then he said well ok.
I'll be honest I really don't know too much about it. A cousin of mine had her baby circumcised and another family member didn't with hers. What are the pros and cons of having it done and not having it done?

Re: Circumcision
I think the health benefits aren't quite as clear anymore and that it is really a social/cosmetic question at this point(what will the other kids say in the locker room). Looking like daddy seems to also be a priority in most families.

I agree..I choose not to circumsize my son since my DH couldn't decide (DH is). To me it is a parent's responsiblity to teach proper higiene so he will need to be a little more torough but he won't know the difference anyway. Looking like daddy and having it be more socially acceptable wasn't enough of a reason for me. Every child is going to look different so why make a body part the same if you aren't a twin to your parent, KWIM. And as far as locker rooms, well nobody should be looking at penis.
You will get a lot of mixed views on this and it might turned into a heated debate but hopefully it doesn't. Just remember it is choice that only you and DH have to make.

We will, I was with someone who wasn't and it wasn't a "good thing".
I definitely agree with teaching the child proper hygeine though.

His was mostly cosmetic & he was afraid that when DS got to the age where he would get intimate with a partner that it might have a negative stigma.
We did not have it done in the hospital due to a medical issue, but DS will have it done at 6 months.

Re: Circumcision
This is a tough one. I know many people feel strongly either way. I have heard that the health benefits argument isn't as strong as it used to be.
But either way, if we have a boy we'll do it for religious reasons (but having it in hospital). And I just prefer it as well. I wouldn't say anyone was wrong for doing it or not doing it. It's more of a personal choice these days, I think.

You can read alot about the subject on justmommies.com forums & other sites. But make sure to do your own research because people tend to get fired up about this topic.

Re: Circumcision
If you don't get it done, there are care techniques that you must learn. My nephew has a friend on his swim team, who is not circumcised. He refers to the kid as, "My friend, Smushed Penis." Now my niece says it, too. I totally understand the people who say that this is not reason enough to have a kid circumcised and maybe this was not the place for me to talk about my nephew's friend but it is what it is.
For me, it is more a matter of my religion than anything else. I have heard of Jews who refused to have this done. I joke that I am brainwashed because I will not question the religious requirement to do it. We are having a bris.

I dont really have much say over here b/c my DH is Jewish and we will be having a BRIS...I know that should this not be the case I was pretty much on the fence and probably would of allowed my DH to make the decision..

We did with DS. There is nothing you have to really do afterwards except put the ointment on when you change their diapers. It heals very quickly and only hurts them afterwards the first time they pee. DS had no complications.

I agree.... I let DH make the decision. He did the research and decided that he didn't want them to be bc it wasn't medically necessary. My argument of "it looks better" wasn't strong enough, so I supported his decision.

Re: Circumcision
Alex was born in Ireland where circumcisions are not performed so he is not. However, if he was born in the US we still would not have had him done. DH is from Argentina and isn't. He doesn't believe it is necessary or should be a routine procedure. DH is very cleanly and he will have to teach Alex about this as he grows older. For me, I don't think the health reasons are so strong that I would do it. I think more and more people are opting not to have this done so maybe when they are teens it won't be such a weird "locker room" thing.

Re: Circumcision
both my husband and I were born in Poland and we have never heard of circumcision until we came to the US... I dont think there is health basis for circumcision, if there was than whole population of European men would be walking around with some kind of infection or another...

Re: Circumcision
As we live in the UK it is not done to a majority of men, however, as I am Jewish and I fully intend to raise my child as a Jewish man (as best I can) we had a bris. It was an important way for me to link my son to generations of men in our family before me. Its completely your personal choice.
My son is a roundhead and my husband is a cavalier.
I just hope I have a girl next so I do not have to do it again...

Re: Circumcision
i too am on the fence on this issue. DH isnt and i thought that DS should match his daddy, but then again, its not like they will actually sit there and compare right?? Plus ive heard horror stories of men having to get it done when they are much older and i cant even imagine how painful that is!!! DH actually is leaning towards having it done for our DS and im gonna let him make the final decision.

This is how DH and I feel. If we are ever blessed with a son he will not be circumcised. We both feel it's a unnecessary procedure that has no real benefits. I also think enough people aren't doing it that who whole "locker room" theory really doesn't apply anymore.

Re: Circumcision
Are the health problems people are posting about infection related? Was it an issue of poor hygiene?

Re: Circumcision
Ultimately, I am leaving this decision up to DH if we have a son. He has a penis, and I figure he's the best one to make the final decision, and teach DS proper hygiene if he decides against.
