Re: Circumcision

both my husband and I were born in Poland and we have never heard of circumcision until we came to the US... I dont think there is health basis for circumcision, if there was than whole population of European men would be walking around with some kind of infection or another...

ITA. From Western Europe myself, circumcision is not "well seeing" at all (the boys' locker thing going on!) and most men consider circumcized men "only half men". But that goes back to culture and WWII. So that's totally a cultural thing.

I believe this is both a religious and US cultural thing here in the US.

We had DS circumcised. DH is Jewish (although we had it done at the hospital) and he strongly believed in it.

Hygiene is key in a non circumcised boy.

My co-worker's son was not circumcised as an infant and now at 8 years old had to have it done because of health problems. After listening to my friends troubles, I will definitely have any male children circumcised.

It can go the other way as well. My bf's son had to be recircumsized at the age of 4 because the skin reattached itself.

If we were having a boy we would have. DH is not but looks like he is. He said although he isnt he would like his son if we ever had one to be since even with proper hygine some things are more painful-he had the chicken Pox ALL OVER and it hurt even down there and he's sure the foreskin made it hurt worse.

Re: Circumcision

The health benefits are minimal. We didn't circumcise our son, and its no big deal to clean. You don't have to pull anything back, just wipe it like a finger. When he gets older and starts to retract, he just has to pull it back and rinse, its no big deal at all! The rates are 50/50 so the locker room is no longer an issue. Many boys end up having issues with their circumcisons, a lot get adhesions which have to be ripped apart

Re: Circumcision

My husband is not circumsized but he instists that if we have a boy he will be. I asked him why and his answer was "most boys are". Not really sure what he means by that but I guess growing up not circumsized had some sort of impact.

DS is circumsized. DH is as well, he didn't want DS to be because he believes it to be barbaric, BUT he thinks socially it is better to be.

I pretty much just told the doctor we were doing it and DH had to deal.

I think the health benefits aren't quite as clear anymore and that it is really a social/cosmetic question at this point(what will the other kids say in the locker room). Looking like daddy seems to also be a priority in most families.

ITA. I would not have had my son circumcised, but since DH has a penis & I don't, I let him make the final call. His was mostly cosmetic & he was afraid that when DS got to the age where he would get intimate with a partner that it might have a negative stigma.

We did not have it done in the hospital due to a medical issue, but DS will have it done at 6 months.

same here (except he's had it done already). and knowing how "squeemish" dh is about talking about things like sex in the first place, there's no way he'd be able to tell his son(s) about cleaning their penises/peni(?) besides, it's not like he'd know what to tell them either.

That video bears no resemblance to any of the live circumcisions I have seen. It is beyond me why the procedure in that video took so long.

we're circumsizing our boy - aesthetics are the main reason. just a bit worried about taking care of the cut afterwardsChat Icon

We did with DS. There is nothing you have to really do afterwards except put the ointment on when you change their diapers. It heals very quickly and only hurts them afterwards the first time they pee. DS had no complications.

Sorry about the TMI but...My son had it done as well, and I agree with the above care. The only thing I didn't know is that where the skin is healing can adhere to the sides which happened to my son and I had to sort of push the top upward everyday to avoid it from adhering. Its kind of hard to explain, but I had no idea how to care for it. Also I didn't know that your OB performs the surgery...

We aren't sure what we are having either...but we decided way before that if it is a boy, we will circumcise....it wasn't really an issue for us...we just knew that is what we were going to do.

hmmm...i'll be sure to keep a close eye on that - yeah, i wasn't sure who would do it in the hospital, i guess i'll ask my doc next week. :)

if we were having a son, DH would have decided and it was something he wanted done. Like other posters said, I don't have a penis, so I don't feel I have the right to make such a decision.

DH and I are kind of arguing about this. I want it done, he doesn't

Dh is circumcised but he feels like we shouldn't be cutting off parts that aren't ours and he heard that circumcised men have better experiences sexually.

I explained to him that a majority of women prefer circumcised me - myself included and now he's starting to see it my way Chat Icon

Hygiene is SO important!!!!
When I was student teaching a first grade class YEARS ago, there was one boy who would always raise his hand to go to the bathroom and then just pee himself as he was asking the question. Turns out he was not circumcised and (his dad was) and he was not properly caring for his penis. He had chronic burning infections - so by the time he felt the urge to pee over the constant burning, it would be too late and he'd have an accident!

A bris is performed in a different way. The method in the video is the Gomco method, while bris' are with the Mogen method. The Mogen method is faster but doctors prefer the Gomco for some reason.

I'm pretty sure I will not have it done. It's a personal choice I see now.

It comes down to hygiene really. If you teach your son that there will not be a problem. My husband never had a problem and I never had a problem with him in a particular dept Chat Icon

I'm also looking at it like this....why change something that is naturally formed that way in the first place? It's like your performing plastic surgery on a newborn and for what really? I also can't put myself to put him through that pain when there is no reason (medically) to have it done. It's a personal choice like I said and its up to the parents to teach their kids proper hygiene. That's my view on it.

Thanks ladies for all your replies. I learned so much about foreskin Chat Icon

I agree to part #1. I have been with both & intact men experience sex on a whole different level.

I think that women in our age range are used to seeing a circumcised penis, so there might be an aversion for some women our age, but I do also feel that since the ratio is changed, it might not be as much of an issue for our sons. But who knows really what the impression will be?

I read somewhere that the ratio now is about 50% circumcised, 50% not, so it seems that the ration here in the US is changing....

Just make sure nobody retracts his foreskin. I've had to fight a couple of doctors from doing it. Here is a good link.

I have a similar view, except it happened to my DH. He had a rare complication thruout his life (not hygeine related, but it wasnt retracting properly) and he had to get circumcised when he was 18. Chat Icon It wasnt a pleasant experience.

I am not pregnant and not even thinking about babies at this point, but if and when I have a son I think I will do it. Depends on what country I am living in at the time.

There is still no reason to pause to talk to cameras as the penis turns purple or to hold the penis in a clamp for more than a few seconds!!

The clamp is held in place to allow clotting.

Both my boys are not and although I hope they never have any problems I personally think it makes more sense to have it performed if something comes up and it is medically necessary rather than to just do it because I think it will look nicer.

I go by the "if it ain't broke" rule.

And although some women don't like uncircumcised men. Some actually like them better. So that doesn't worry me at all.
