Cheese? Is Kraft singles really so bad?

DD loves cheese! It's pretty much the one food that excites her. The only problem is she loves the Kraft singles. I tried the Sargento and she hated it. I'm reading that the Kraft cheese isn't the best. She's been having a slice a day. Do you think it's bad for her?Chat Icon Is low sodium delic cheese better maybe?

Re: Cheese? Is Kraft singles really so bad?

If I were going to worry about the kraft singles, I'd look at whether it was highly processed and contained preservatives. DD went through a phase where the only cheese she ate was American cheese (lasted about 2 months). I got deli sliced cheese for her.
Now she only eats organic mozzarella string cheese.... won't touch American. No idea what happened, lol.

Silly question but how would I know if it were highly processed? I see it has preservatives. Maybe I'll get the deli cheese. Hopefully she'll eat that now. She's so obsessed with the singles.

I grew up on Kraft. I wouldn't worry but I also do not do any organic stuff either so I may not be the best to ask

I get deli cheese...lower sodium Boars Head. But only because we like the taste better. DD eats that.
But if she would only eat the Kraft I wouldn't sweat it. Like PP said I grew up on that too. And I lived.
One slice a day of anything won't kill you IMO

I think everyone's defintion of "really so bad" can be drastically different from person to person. A good *free* app that I use to help me decide if my family eats a product or not is "fooducate." It gives each food a rating using letters and then gives you a list of the good and not so good about each food.

That's true. Thanks for the app! According to that the deli cheese wouldn't be much better. Chat Icon Ugh, so much to worry about these days. I just want to make the right choices for her.

Cheese? Is Kraft singles really so bad?

I'm sure they aren't any better, but I buy TJ's organic American cheese slices when I make Mac and cheese for DS.

They're definitely processed bc their title is pasturized cheese product, not actually cheese. I probably wouldn't worry too much about a slice a day as long as she's not eating a lot of processed foods throughout the day but I'd probably keep trying real cheese to see if she'll eventually take to it.

Re: Cheese? Is Kraft singles really so bad?

My DD loves cheese and eats a ton of it. Honestly, I would never buy the Kraft cheese. You have so many alternatives that are MUCH MUCH better and actually taste better too - if she likes the sliced cheese:

Organic Valley
Applegate Farms
and Andrew and Everett

to name a few...

Seems like a good alternative. Where do you get it? I'm doing a search on their website and there are no retailers that carry it.

Re: Cheese? Is Kraft singles really so bad?

Kraft singles are highly processed , cheese like food. In addition, any inorganic dairy products contains hormones, antibiotics and GMO feed. For these reasons, I would not consider this a good food. Here is a link to the ingredients:

http://blog.fooducate.com/2009/04/20/inside-the-label-kraft-singles-cheese-miniseries-part-3-of-3/

There are tons of great alternatives though. Your best bet is an organic, whole cheese. Try the following brands:
1. Organic Valley
2. Applegate farms
3. Trader Joe's house brand ( they have a yummy Mozarella string cheese)

Good luck, it should be an easy switch to make because these brands are easy to find. Chat Icon

Fairway, Whole Foods, Some Stop and Shops, Some Shop Rites. Also, Stop and Shop has a house, organic brand called Nature's Promise that makes organic cheeses. I think they also carry Applegate farms sliced cheese Also, if you have a Trader Joe's near by they have a good cheese selection.

I only watch some labels and Kraft cheese is definitely something I avoid. It says on it "cheese product". We eat a lot of bad stuff but for things my kids eat a lot of I do try and research a bit.

Just something to keep in mind...a lot of things we ate as children didn't contain half the chemicals that they do today. Kind of like how cigarettes back in the day didn't have as many chemicals as they do now.

If your daughter likes cheese I'd give her real cheese, not a cheese-like product. It's so tricky bc these companies are constantly trying to sneak crap into our food. It takes a lot of work to figure out what's good and what isn't!

Whole foods or there is an organic store in Sayville(Cornicopia) that carries it. I've seen it at king kullen too.

Yeah I've been pretty worried about it only because she wants it EVERY day! I'm not into buying organic for me and every now and then we all eat bad things. If its something every day though it's just concerning to me.
Thanks all for the advice!!!!

Okay so you didn't grow a third arm from eating kraft singles everyday Chat Icon, but how do you know that you are not going to face a health problem such as diabetes, alzheimers, Parkinson's, cancer, depression or high blood pressure down the road? Eating processed foods changes your DNA as well as the flora in your gut. You then pass this on to your children (as well as their children) who are at a higher risk of developing conditions such as food allergies, asthma, add/ADHD, obesity, infertility, depression, anxiety, learning disabilities...I could go on and on. Each generation becomes weaker and sicker if the previous ate an unhealthy diet.

I also don't understand why wanting to eat organic is considered snobby or pretentious? Until the last century, humans have eaten organically for thousands of years. We are no longer eating food, but food-like products. We are the most advanced country in the world yet our population is the sickest. But oh, eating that processed frozen dinner isn't going to kill you....yet.

I don't smoke. Never have, never will and think it's digusting.

However, I have never heard this. I actually just always thought we KNOW more about what is in cigarettes now, and what harm they cause, than back in the day. I was not aware that they are actually made differently. Can you tell me how so?

Eek! Yes something is definitely going on in this country. I've never seen so many children with food allergies. I don't consider eating organic to be snobby at all. I think it's just very expensive and a tough switch to make. I'm sure it's so much healthier though.
