Milk isn't yellow, so therefore Kraft adds a ton of chemicals and food coloring to make it the color it is. No thanks.

Kind of like how cigarettes back in the day didn't have as many chemicals as they do now.

I don't smoke. Never have, never will and think it's digusting.

However, I have never heard this. I actually just always thought we KNOW more about what is in cigarettes now, and what harm they cause, than back in the day. I was not aware that they are actually made differently. Can you tell me how so?

Yes it's true. Chemicals in today cigarettes didn't exist 50 years ago. Nicotine is NOT the worst part of a cigarette. 100's of years ago people used to grow and roll their own cigarettes and while I sure inhaling into the lung want great for all intensive purposes it was "natural". Did you know a Newport cigarette has so much fiberglass in the filter you can melt it down and make a shank? I've seen this on prison shows.

When I was a kid my yogurt wasn't neon colored. It didn't have artificial colors. It didn't have artificial sugar in it either. Every year in America we create new chemicals and add to food. They didn't exist 10, 20, 30 years ago.

Put it this way in the UK Kraft Mac and cheese isn't allowed to use artificial dyes. Their Mac has beet juice to color it. And ours has proven cancer causing chemicals.

LOL. I'm sorry but this makes me laugh... We grew up on Kraft... I still eat it all the time... I don't see the big deal... This whole organic, what is best movement is really getting out of control Chat Icon
Ps: my dd had some of my Taco Bell food today... Oh the horror! LoL

Okay so you didn't grow a third arm from eating kraft singles everyday Chat Icon, but how do you know that you are not going to face a health problem such as diabetes, alzheimers, Parkinson's, cancer, depression or high blood pressure down the road? Eating processed foods changes your DNA as well as the flora in your gut. You then pass this on to your children (as well as their children) who are at a higher risk of developing conditions such as food allergies, asthma, add/ADHD, obesity, infertility, depression, anxiety, learning disabilities...I could go on and on. Each generation becomes weaker and sicker if the previous ate an unhealthy diet.

I also don't understand why wanting to eat organic is considered snobby or pretentious? Until the last century, humans have eaten organically for thousands of years. We are no longer eating food, but food-like products. We are the most advanced country in the world yet our population is the sickest. But oh, eating that processed frozen dinner isn't going to kill you....yet.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon for example, our bodies can barely digest something as basic as wheat, with all the pesticides and frankenseeds they use to grow crops. To me that's a big red flag in regards to celiac disease, gluten intolerance, etc.

I don't either. To each their own, if someone is into that I don't knock them or point out the fact that the organic section at your local supermarket is about as organic as Kraft Chat Icon but I hate how those who choose to eat organic (and again your choice, go on with your bad self not knocking it) feel like they can treat those of us who don't buy into it like we are abusing ourselves and our children.

Just bc you don't eat organic does not mean you eat processed crap, I cook every night and make healthy meals with vegetables, whole grains, and lean meat I just don't personally believe in the hype around 'organic' that is not to say my son eats processed crap at every meal, he eats healthy homemade meals, occasionally if we are eating out he will have a taste of things that might be processed, everything in moderation.

Eek! Yes something is definitely going on in this country. I've never seen so many children with food allergies. I don't consider eating organic to be snobby at all. I think it's just very expensive and a tough switch to make. I'm sure it's so much healthier though.

I never really "believed" in the whole organic thing myself.....until I had DD. We started with organic yogurt and such and DH asked me one day "How far do we take this. When do we stop?" We never ate organic and hoenstly ate a lot of processed foods that "appear" healthy. So, I went into research mode and was appauled with what I found. I won't go into details but it is disgusting what is used to create food products. (Good read: Salt, sugar, fat) We've been on this journey for a little less than a year and we are no where near 100% organic. This is due to many factors such as cost, availability etc. but I feel better about the choices we make as a family. It is a very long transition to make and quite frankly not an easy one.

VERY well put! To each their own. Just because we don't choose to feed our children a 100% organic diet does not make us bad mothers. (And likewise, those who do choose organic are not bad mothers either). Everyone makes their own parenting choices. It's sad that people have to put others down for what they feed their children.

Here is my issue with organic. And I know I am cynical to the 9th degree.
I don't trust it.
I was in Stop n Shop yesterday buying sweet potatoes for dinner.
They had the organic and the non organic side by side.
Organic was double the price. I stood there, holding one in each hand and thought to myself- how do I REALLY know these "organic" ones are really organic? How do I know that some stock boy is not switching them by accident? How do I know these so called organic ones REALLY weren't grown with pesticides?
I don't.
It's a HUGE business.
It could be the biggest scam ever. Could you imagine one day, 10 years from now, they find out it was all a scam and everyone who thought they were eating all clean and organic was really duped and was ingesting just as many pesticides and GMO's as the rest of us poor slobs? What would they do? Have to detox their bodies?
I know that's far fetched but nothing is impossible
That's just the cycnic in me.

Doesn't all produce have a label on them with the numbers that differentiate organic, GMO and non organic? I believe those labels originate from the distributor, not the actual store, so there shouldn't be a mix up.

I do get organic potatos from BJ's for $2.99 for a small bag. Same price as a large bag on non organic, and I never use the entire large bag anyway. The organic go bad QUICKLY though! That's how I can tell they are organic, they don't last forever Chat Icon

Real cheese will say all natural, or something of that sort. The ingrediants too will pretty much be milk, salt,etc... nothing that sounds chemical or funky.
Fake cheese will be labeled as processed cheese food or something of the sort...

There are laws in order to get the organic label. I think the soil has to be organic for 10 years before they get the official stamp.

Can't your reasoning me applied to anything though? How do you know Tylenol is really Tylenol? Maybe it's really a sugar pill?

Having a child has changed the way I think of food. Sadly I think of my sons health way more than my own. After seeing what GMO's do to rats, combined with our ridiculously high cancer rates...My husband and I have decided to put a little more thought into what we eat. We haven't gone completely organic, not yet anyway. But we have started planting our own garden and over the course of the year hope to start growing most of our own produce.

If I were going to worry about the kraft singles, I'd look at whether it was highly processed and contained preservatives. DD went through a phase where the only cheese she ate was American cheese (lasted about 2 months). I got deli sliced cheese for her.
Now she only eats organic mozzarella string cheese.... won't touch American. No idea what happened, lol.

Silly question but how would I know if it were highly processed? I see it has preservatives. Maybe I'll get the deli cheese. Hopefully she'll eat that now. She's so obsessed with the singles.

There is a great iphone app called "Fooducate" you can scan different items and it tells you how healthy different foods are.

I think there is a droid version too!

Re: Cheese? Is Kraft singles really so bad?

all cheese are processed. What is important is to read the label and look for things that make sense to be in cheese. Milk, Salt, flavoring, etc not oil and weird ass chemicals. Giving a child kraft cheese slices once in a while isn't going to harm them but if its a steady diet then I would go for a better brand or perhaps a different cheese.

Healthiest cheeses to eat are: feta, Mozzarella (real), Parmesan, Swiss Emmentaler and cottage cheeses is various ethnic forms.

I will add to the organic foods, i am starting to really go for foods that are not Genetically modified foods (GMOs.) Although being that I can barely afford my monthly mortgage I can't truly be that on top of things.

For the record, this thread just made me crave one and go and get a singles out of the fridge for a snack.

I actually don't like them like that... I'll only eat them if melted, like in a grilled cheese... I don't care for thick cheese so that's prob why lol.

As far as the organic debate, who's to say that 10 years down the road "they" won't be saying that organic is now bad for you... I mean it wasn't too long ago that the news was saying broccoli was bad right?... Lol. I think too much technology has led us into an over analyzing, anxiety ridden society! And I honestly think its the anxiety that is going to kill off the population above all else

I think it extremely unlikely that foods containing pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, antibitioics, hormones and GMOS will suddenly be considered " healthier" than foods that don't contain these toxins. Many of the items added to our food are banned in other developed nations because they are deemed harmful. We have a crisis around antibiotic resistant infections in part because our livestock are given antibiotics in such large amounts. We have some of the highest rates of obesity and lifestyle related illness of any developed country in the world. These are serious public health issues that should not be dismissed. Can we control everything in our environment ? No. Should we obsess over every little thing until it makes us crazy? No. Will an occasional serving of unhealthy food kill us? No. However, that doesn't mean we shouldn't be extremely concerned about what we put in our bodies and in the bodies of our children. There is so much objective evidence about the harm of much of today's food. I think that education and awareness is extremely important so we can make the best possible choices.
