Re: can you have a Jewish godparent?
I was baptized and I made my communion but not my confirmation...I was not allowed to be a "godmother" to my best friend's daughter in the eyes of a particular church. Although the godfather made all of his sacraments, I wasn't even allowed to stand as a witness. I was heartbroken. I won't be using that church (which was my parish growing up) when I have my baptized, especially since I've heard so many other churches don't require documentation.

Re: can you have a Jewish godparent?
We are Catholic and our church did not require any documentation or paper work from either of the Godparents that we chose. Literally all we had to do was give their names and that was it...

Re: can you have a Jewish godparent?
Only one od DD's godparents had to be catholic and made all their sacraments. We are using my sister who was raised catholic and made all her sacraments and my BIL who was raised methodist.

Re: can you have a Jewish godparent?
Depends on the Church - you have to find one that is more liberal - but even then, I wouldn't advertise that they were Jewish though, b/c that is kind of WAY off the spectrum of just not being baptised KWIM?
DH and I are not religous - we chose Godparents based on who we thought would be there for our children throughout their lives - not who would help to 'teach them to be catholic' (which is kind of what the whole 'actual' point of a Godparent is - someone who will help you rasie them as good Catholics ........) so I understand why your DH would want to choose a good friend, regardless of his own religous beliefs ..........

Re: can you have a Jewish godparent?
Isn't the entire point of a Godparent to help in raising the child in the Catholic faith? I know a lot of people seem to think it means something else, but I do believe that this is the intended purpose, like it or not. I can see allowing the second Godparent to be of a different Christian faith, but the Jewish religion has pretty different views in many ways. If you're able to find a Catholic parish that's willing to do this though, then go for it if that's what works for you!

Re: can you have a Jewish godparent?
Maybe it depends on the church? My niece's godfather is jewish but her godmother is Catholic.

I see this point very much. To a lot of people the Godparent title is more about an honor and saying that this person is important in your lives. BUT what I think some people need to remember is that that is not the true purpose of Godparents and it's not how the church views it. Sucks, I know.
I bet if your not stuck on one church and willing to call around you will find one to do it! Good Luck!!

well they dont all check but just curious...
why would you choose a jewish godfather, its kinda an oxymoron...
why wouldn't you? He'd rather choose his best friend who is jewish than a random someone else just because they are Catholic.
Because a godparents is someone that you choose to help raise the child with the catholic church! I can understand if they were christian or something like that, But jews have a totally different belief.
