can you have a Jewish godparent?

i know i should ask the church but i thought someone would know. All of DH's best friends are Jewish. Does that mean he can't pick one of them to be godfather?

I don't think so. I think it has to be someone in good standing with the church who has made all their sacriments. Ask your parish though. Sometimes there is a more lenient monsignor running the parish that will bend the rules a bit.

Re: can you have a Jewish godparent?

The godparents have to be Baptized in a church, most churches require the godparents to be confirmed as well so I don't think anyone Jewish could do it

It depends on which Church you will be using! My DH and I are Godparents to my nephew, neither of us were baptized. My brother and sister-in-law found a Church they liked and they didn't require the Godparents to be baptized. They felt that it was family decision and if you choose someone that you felt was going to be a good Godparent that was enough for them!

ETA: This was a Catholic Church

Sorry girls, but my godfather is Jewish. You do NOT need to be baptized in the Catholic church to be a godparent. You DO need to find a church that will perform the baptism.

My father is Jewish and our home parish would not baptize me at all. I was baptized at St. Ignatius in Long Beach with both my Jewish dad and my Jewish godfather present.

If you are Catholic, than technically you need 1 Catholic godparent, and Im pretty sure that the other person can be a witness at the baptism but you can call them the godparent after the ceremony.

So your husband's Jewish friend can be a witness at the ceremony, but fo all intents and purposes, he can be the godfather.

Im 100% certain that technically you only NEED to pick 1 godpartent for the ceremony. This person is supposed to be an active member of the faith, and have made all of their sacraments...some churches may be more lenient than others. Pretty sure the other can be Jewish.

Re: can you have a Jewish godparent?

We did not have to show any proof of baptism or that our chosen godparents were catholic. If I remember correctly, I think the church said they prefer if they are catholic, but at least 1 should be catholic. But no proof was required. Both my brother and I have a jewish godparent.

why wouldn't you? He'd rather choose his best friend who is jewish than a random someone else just because they are Catholic.

This is exactly what I was going to say. I am a godparent to my nephew and so is SIL's brother, who is Methodist. Only 1 of the godparents must be Catholic. My nephew's baptism was a private ceremony at the church, so I am sure this didn't just slip through the cracks. The priest and parish were well aware.

Some churches only require one Godparent to be a Baptized Catholic. Check with your church.

Re: can you have a Jewish godparent?

Crashing, but a related question was printed in my parish bulletin last week:

Q: I recently attended a baptism in another
parish where both godparents were women. I
was surprised . . . is that permitted by the
Church?
A: The short answer to your question is no, but it
might be helpful to outline the Church’s
guidelines for godparents (also referred to as
“sponsors”), and to clarify who is eligible to
serve in that privileged role. Many people would
be surprised to learn that technically, the Church
only requires that there be one godparent for a
child being baptized, though the prevailing
custom is that there are almost always two.
Whenever there are two god-parents, one must be
male, and the other female. They are to be
baptized and confirmed Catholics themselves,
and at least 16 years of age. They are also to be
people who actively participate in the life of the
Church, practicing their faith and receiving the
sacraments regularly. If they do not, how can
they provide any credible example to their
godchild as to what it means to live a committed
Catholic Christian life?
It is permissible that one of the two be non-
Catholic, but if so, he or she must be a baptized
Christian, and is known as a “Christian witness.”
In other words, one could never have a non-
Christian person (e.g., Jewish, Muslim, Hindu,
etc.) serve as a godparent, since that person does
not share the faith we profess in Jesus Christ.
Unfortunately, some priests and/or parishes may
set aside these requirements (which are
universal), but they do not have the permission of
the larger Church to do so.

HTH!

a godparent to some people is just a title not really about god, not sure how the poster feels, but for us... my dh has a godfather who is catholic and family and never did crap for him and I have never even met. But our son will have a jewish "godfather" who is awesome and he and his wife (the godmother) are the best two people for the job.

The role of a Godparent is to ensure the child continues with their religious education/practice if something were to happen to their parents.

Someone who is Jewish (or any religion) can still oversee this responsibility even if they practice a different religion.

To the OP only one godparent has to be Catholic.

this is true of the church im looking into because my husband is Protestant and he wants to pick his brother as the godfather. so he would be considered a witness in the churches eyes. and the godmother would have to be catholic.

Re: can you have a Jewish godparent?

If it is going to be in a Catholic church, I believe you CAN NOT be jewish. I am protestant and we can have a jewish Godparent, I believe.
When DH(he is catholic) was our neices Godfather, I remember trying to track down his proof of batism in the Catholic church.

Re: can you have a Jewish godparent?

DH and I were asked to be the godparents of our nephew. I am Jewish DH is Catholic. The church only required one of us have all sacraments completed.

eta - We asked DH's brother and sister to be DS godparents. BIL has never made any sacraments, SIL completed all, Catholic church said no problem.

I really think it depends on your church. You should call them and find out.

I am an atheist and I'm my nephew's "sponsor" It does sound strange. But even though I have my own set of beliefs, if anything happened to my sister and BIL, I would make sure that their children would be exposed to religion, b/c I know that is what they want. It doesn't mean that I have to accept the beliefs as my own. Does that make sense?

on a sidenote: this was in a Presbyterian Church. My cousin in my niece's sponsor and that was done in a Catholic church (she is Protestant). (This is in Northport, where the Catholic and Presbyterian churches are sister churches - the reason for two different)

Re: can you have a Jewish godparent?

All churches are different. The one in NY where my 1st son was baptized was very strict with their rules about being confirmed, etc. But the church down here in NC where my younger son and DD was just baptized only requires 1 of the people to be a Baptized Catholic, not even confirmed. They weren't even Catholic. It is Roman Catholic Church.

My husband's godfather is Jewish. I would ask the church. Some might allow it, and some might now.

Oh, and we are Catholic. So some Catholic churches allow it.
