Can we put swine flu in perspective for a second here?

Just for comparison- 38,000 people have died this year alone from the regular old flu. The kind you think nothing about. One person has died from swine flu.

So, lets not get too panicked yet. A lot of this is fear fueled by the media.

While not taking your trip to Mexico is probably a good idea, there's no reason to not go to Target or the grocery store.

Your best safety is in washing your hands often and keeping them away from you mouth, eyes and nose.

I think the fear is because this flu is a bit different. It has killed people in different age groups. There is no "vaccination" for it yet. The virus is seen as being able to change itself which I believe is what concerns most of the scientists. They have no idea how to "control" the mutation of the virus yet and if they can.

Re: Can we put swine flu in perspective for a second here?

Ugh. Thank you! My school has cancelled alllllllll field trips, including a three day trip for the graduating class. I understand that this is a "new" virus, but still, it's not an instant death sentence if you get it. I had the nurse pulling kids out of my classes yesterday and sending them home if they so much as sniffled. It's allergy season, and even when the kids would say that they just had allergies, home they went.Chat Icon

I think you have some very good points here. For me, I'm not panicked about it, although a concern for myself and my loved ones - I just continue to wash my hands often and take my vitamins and immune support supplements.

The fact that it is killing people in different age groups (including healthy adults with healthy immune systems) is characteristic of any new virus. It's not something unique just to the swine flu -- it just proves that this strain of the flu is new in humans. Over time, we would build immunity to it like we have to other, more common human viruses. I'm not saying that doesn't make the swine flu dangerous now -- but this characteristic is just indicative of the fact that it's a new virus. It isn't at all surprising.

I was in the post office today and a man coughed 2x..You had to see the people taking a step back from him/leaving altogether. It was a little extreme IMO (and I AM chicken little LOL!).

Re: Can we put swine flu in perspective for a second here?

I agree that its way too hyped up. The ER's in NYC are overpacked because as soon as anyone so much as sneezes, they are heading over to the ER, and in ambulances no less.
I feel bad for the poor guy having a heart attack who has to wait for an ambulance because some idiot who coughed once called 911.

400 patients yesterday in a local ER with c/o flu symptoms. Not ONE confirmed case of swine flu.

Doctor's offices with patients calling wanting Tamiflu even with no symptoms.

Come on now.

I am starting to feel like I may be getting a cold (I'm not going into the office tomorrow, anyway...) -- and I'm not panicking. If I do get sick at all (not just allergies), I'll go to the doctor right away, but I won't rush to the ER b/c I have a cold or a fever...

I also suffer from allergies and whenever I cough people stare at me too. I can care less, I know I am not spreading swine flu everywhere. I am not against people seeing a doctor if they are sick, but people calling up doctors offices demanding Tamiflu or calling 911 because they sneezed, that is a different story.

Yup, I was agree with you. Chat Icon

I completely think it's ridiculous for people who aren't sick seeing doctors for tamiflu or people going to the ER with cold symptoms. The panic over this is ridiculous.

ITA and HERE is the real perspective/issue....

There was an expert physician interviewed today. He explained the Swine flu in detail. He has studied the flu and the flu of 1918. He said that since the Southern Hemisphere is heading into winter, that will tell us what is going to happen with this virus. He said that IF the Swine Flu comes back to the US in the fall, it could become very deadly like the flu in 1918, so only time will tell. IF it doesn't come back, good for us all.

That's why it's critical for the SPREAD to be slowed...by the govt, by the public, etc. So a vaccine can be created in enough time before it mutates and becomes TRULY DEADLY for many many more than the seasonal flu. Not just tens of thousands but hundreds of thousands.

And like others have said, the seasonal flu DOES have a vaccine and it is nothing like this flu (virus type) in makeup (bird, human and swine combined). In this case, medical providers can't even get vaccinated, no one can so it can spread ALOT faster since NO ONE is vaccinated nor does anyone have any immunity to it.

Big difference from the regular flu. Just b/c it hasn't killed many in the US (or any) yet, doesn't mean it can't become a very severe health emergency like the Flu of 1918.

So this is very serious, even though some don't think it is. THe point of slowing it down is so that they can create a vaccine SHOULD this become stronger as it circulates in the population, around the world. I don't understand why people don't think this is serious? Influenza can be very deadly, esp when the entire GLOBE, not one person, has been vaccinated for THIS strain and cannot be. A strain that has the potential to become SEVERLY deadly to each one of us.

Please don't be so quick to say the gov't is overreacting or people are overreacting. It's NOT that bad now but it has VERY severe potential. The ones getting it here NOW are lucky...God help the public if this thing comes back with a vengence in the fall as this expert illustrated.

I will see if I can find a link about this...

The panic over the flu can be just as dangerous as the flu itself. Let's not forget that the rushed vaccine program implemeted during the first swine flu in the 1970s left far more people paralyzed (Guillian Barre syndrome) than were ever infected with swine flu...

The fact that we have much, MUCH more advanced healthcare and communication systems now is a huge advantage over the early 1900s. Take reasonable precautions? Yes. Panic and think the sky is falling? No. Because it's not.

Re: Can we put swine flu in perspective for a second here?

The difference between 1918 and not is almost 100 years of medical technology.

there is already a vaccine in development. The regular flu vaccine is a guess anyway- there are currently 3 strains of human influeza and theu guess which one is going to be the most prevelant. This year, they most common flu strand was Influenza A, but that was not what the vaccine was for.

Also, we have the ability to give IV fluids, medications to better control symtoms, etc. The flus doesnt actually kill you, the symptoms due. We have medications like Tamiflu that can treat it effectivley.

But with overuse of these medications, they no longer become effective- thats why its important not to panic at a slight symptom, rush off the ER adn demand Tamiflu like people are doing. That only makes the situation worse.

I never said to blow it off, just to be reasonable. Take precations, washing your hands is the most effective preventative.

I agree. I have reservations about getting the vaccine should they come up with one too...due to this. That's why the GOAL is to stop the spread so it can hopefully go away for a long time...so they don't rush a vaccine out.

I was thinking about that tonight. DD felt a little warm to me and that got me thinking that the ERs are probably all chaotic. Without swine flu, NYC area hospitals are full of people going in for the slightest pain or sniffle. I worry for those with legitimate emergencies.
