Re: Can we put swine flu in perspective for a second here?

We can't live our lives in fear. There are a million different things that will kill you before swine flu. How about HIV, antibiotic resistant bacteria (which was caused by people demanding antibiotics for everything for themselves and their child), Tuberculosis and meningitis.

Every few years the media hypes up something. SARS, avian flu, MRSA, and now swine flu.

I think its terrible that the media scares people instead of offering facts and real information.

Avoid travelling to Mexico & wash your hands often.

Done.

I'm so over this swine BS.

My office just put this memo out- I think its a tad bit extreme!

Primary Contact – If you or someone living with or working with you in close proximity becomes ill with flu-like symptoms, you will be required to stay out of the office for 10 calendar days.

Secondary Contact – If you have had no direct contact with an infected person, but you have traveled to a geographic region where the AH1N1 infection is present (e.g. Mexico), you will be required to stay out of the office for 5 calendar days.

Why is this extreme? It is extremely important to slow the spread of this.

And...it's not just in Mexico...it is here.

10 calendar days is a bit extreme ITA!
This will just cause people to try to cover up the fact they may have had contact and make matters worse.
I can see this whole panic bringing an already sh!tty economy to a screeching halt. Wonderful.

At this point the people that are scared will continue to be scared, while the people that aren't, aren't. I doubt it's possible to convert someone from one camp to the other, so I've stopped trying.

Yeah exactly. There will always be the people who worry over everything. I know someone who goes to the doctor- no joke- at least once a week. Every time she farts or has a hang nail... her chart must be as thick as War and Peace and the doctors and nurses must Chat Icon everytime she walks in.

I guess it's just some people's nature. Some will say- why worry when you can't control it- others will panic at everything.

I think the fear is because this flu is a bit different. It has killed people in different age groups. There is no "vaccination" for it yet. The virus is seen as being able to change itself which I believe is what concerns most of the scientists. They have no idea how to "control" the mutation of the virus yet and if they can.

Yes, but let's still keep it in perspective. We never had a vaccination for the regular strain of flu that has killed thousands every year, until VERY recently. In fact, most of us grew up surrounded by the influenza virus, without any protection from any virus, and were fine. And the strain that has been floating around the US for decades now has mutated thousands of times, in the same fashion as this particular strain. And, yes, while there have been deaths, ALL of the deaths are of Mexican citizens - I would attribute most of that to the lower level of healthcare availability than anything else. As of yet, the strain that is passing around the US is no more lethal or dangerous than the strain that has been floating around for quite some time.

I am generally not too worried about it.

However, I belive the reason the CDC and WHO are excercising greater caution with respect to H1N1 is because it seems to have caused fatalities in the strongest portion of the population. The regular flu usually affects the elderly and very young - this virus show a different pattern.

I agree that one should not panic. But I think that whenever awareness is raised that causes people to excercise better hygiene - that can't be a bad thingChat Icon

Re: Can we put swine flu in perspective for a second here?

I just want to say that ANY flu is deadly. I wouldn't want to catch it at a time that I could NOT take the vaccine (and, that time would be now) so I have me some hand sanitizer (I already wash my hands like a fanatic anyway)

I think the way people poo poo the seasonal flu is just as dangerous.

the "flu" is Influenza, one of the most (if not the most) historically deadly viruses known to man.

I respect it enough, and respect the power of nature and mutation enough to not be so arrogant as to assume that "we got that". 38,000 people is A LOT. I don't want to be added to that list.

and I wouldn't want a lack of diligence on MY part to add someone elses name to that list either.

there is a TREMENDOUS difference between preparedness and panic. all I see are extremists on both sides.

I am not poo-pooing it at all - I'm just trying to keep the perspective that the world isn't going to end, there is no need to hide in my house with my daughter for the next 6 months. Of course, we should ALL be concerned about contracting the flu, whether it is the normal strain, or the swine flu, and should take extra precautions to wash our hands as frequently as possible. But there's no need for extra widespread panic and fear mongering when this is something that, while certainly dangerous, is no more dangerous than what we have co-existed with for decades now.

I didn't mean you specifically Beth. I meant in general Chat Icon

but it IS slightly more dangerous b/c of the fact that it's new to the body. no antibodies.

at least with seasonal flu, the body recognizes SOME if it, even if it's a mutated strain.

but anyway...it matters not. there will be nutters running around with hazmats on, and there will be flippant people who think it's funny to sneeze on passersby...

and there will be quasi normal people Chat Icon who wash their hands, drink orange juice, live life and hope for the best.

and really, in the end, that's all any of us can do.

This is exactly how I feel. I am healthy, so I am not too worried about it. I am washing my hands more often and started carrying around my hand sanitizer again. BUT when you have 2 family members in chemo, 10 children under the age of 12 in your family, elderly parents and other family members with various illnesses. . .I don't think it is ridiculous to be a little extra vigilant

EXACTLY! I am all for rasing awareness and being vigilant.
That is a good idea at ANY time- but lets face it we all get laxed on it.

I am definitely washing my hands more and using more Purell.

But other than that- there isn't much we can do about so it's business as usual for me.
Panicing and worrying and obsessing isn't going to help.

I know - just defending my position since I've been called out on it a few times on here already. No harm, no foul.

I will say this, as a preggo, of course I'm a little more concerned than I would normally be, because no matter what strain, whether regular ol' influenza or the swine flu, there is a risk to the fetus in taking the medication.

But, I'm just being extra cautious in washing my hands, using antibacterial gel and staying as healthy as I can be, while living my normal life and routine Chat Icon

Re: Can we put swine flu in perspective for a second here?

I agree that people shouldn't thoroughly poo poo the swine flu, but it is getting overly hyped IMO, and I think too many people are panicky. Not time for it now.

So many things can happen to any of us at any given time, and there are so many bugs out there. As others have said, wash hands well and often, cover your nose and mouth if coughing or sneezing, and stay home if you think you have a flu. But the media hype is out of hand.

This is my attitude--the swine flu will take whatever course it takes, and my worrying or not worrying about it will not stop it. If I take basic precautions, that is all I can do. So why worry too much at this point? If things get much worse, I can worry all I want. JMO.
