C/s mom: was your DC born in respiratory distress?

DS #1 was a failed induction at 38.5 weeks. He was born via c/s in respiratory distress, hypoglycemic and with an infection (original apgar was 3). He ended up in the nicu for 4 days

DS #2 was just born last week at 37.2 weeks via scheduled c/s. he was born in respiratory distress. (Original apgar was 5) and was in the nicu for 4 days.

Ive been told that its common for this to happen to c/s babies, but i never hear of this happening to anyone I know. Both our births were so traumatic to us. We never really got that excitement and even this time we were team and couldn't enjoy it because we were so nervous for our baby

For both pregnancies I had cholestasis which can cause distress and even still birth. Im not sure if both cases are related to this or to having a c/s.

Im curious to know if other moms have gone through this.

No neither had any respiratory distress. DD #1 was failing to dscend, she flopped sunnyside up, had merconium when my water broke at 38 weeks. My blood pressure skyrocketed when I went into labor. Apgars of 9. They also needed testing at birth bc they thought she would need surgery she did not.

DD#2 came exactly 37 weeks. I became preclampsic. She was also 9 apgars.

Both were bigger babies though. One was 9lbs 4 ozs the other 9lbs 5 ozs.

My C-section was also the result of a failed induction...well an impatient OB but that's another story LOL,
Anyway, she was born at 37 w 3d with no respiratory distress, both Apgars were 9. She was hypoglycemic but that was probably due to the fact that I hadn't eaten in almost 48 hours by the time she was born. I did have the steroid shots for her lungs due to preterm labor at almost 32 weeks, don't know if that played into her NOT having any respiratory issues or not. It IS common for C-section babies to have breathing issues due to the fact that their chests are not "squeezed" through the birth canal, it helps expel excess fluids.

I never heard of that, my C/S baby was ok... but maybe it was more of the weeks you were... at 37 weeks the lungs aren't fully developed yet, and even at 38 weeks sometimes they arent...

I had 2 c-sections and neither of my babies were in respiratory distress.

i had a failed induction as well, but DD was fine - no respiratory distress.

my sister had two C's, and neither of her babies were in respiratory distress either.

Yes. Common.

My DD was a 1 mth early (but was still large at 7.6 lbs), emergency c/s. Hrs after birth she developed a grunting sound, turns out she had fluid in her lungs. They did an xray, she went to NICU for about 2 days. She was fine and still is fine, no respiratory issues ever since then.

I was told sometimes C/S babies take a gulp of amniotic fluid and it's common.

Thanks for sharing ladies. Ive heard that babies of c/s dont always expell the fluid before being born which would happen during natural childbirth.

Both my boys were small 6 lbs 14 oz and 6lbs 13 oz not sure if that matters

My ds was born 3 weeks early via c section after failed vaginal delivery with no issues.

Dd was born via c-section at 37w 2d due to IUGR.

She was born 5lb 5oz, scored a 9 on the Apgars and had zero distress. Any birth can lead to distress

C/S (always breech)

She came earlier than her scheduled appt

No issues at her. Lungs strong. Never heard of that. And it wasn't until AFTER that I even heard about the lung development thing. The docs didn't even bring it up at all.

DS was born at 36 weeks, 6 days via c-section after a failed induction. They decided to induce bc I developed preg-induced hypertension.

DS' Apgar's were 9/9. He had no respiratory distress and did not need to go to the NICU.

I have heard though that for vaginal deliveries the amniotic fluid gets squeezed out (for lack of a better term) whereas with c-sections they can swallow fluid. I have also heard that speech delays are more common with c-sections but who knows.

DD was a failed induction and was fine.

DS #1 was a c/s at 37 weeks and he was born in respiratory distress and spent 3 days in the NICU.

DS #2 was born on Monday at 38.5 weeks via c/s and he was fine also.

Had scheduled c section, DD was, 9.5 lbs, and had to go to NICU because she had fluid in lungs, they said it happens a lot with big babies. She was fine and came home with me when I was released.

I had three babies by c-section.

No respiratory distress and all had Apgars of 9, if I'm remembering correctly!

#1 was 8lbs, 10 oz - 22 inches
#2 was 7lbs, 15 oz - 21 inches
#3 was 8lbs, 10 oz - 20 inches

Jack - no (40w2d 8.7ln 20.5 inches) apgar 9

Grace - yes - inhalation of fluid (38w6d 7.6lb 20inches) apgar 6

I had two c-sections

With my first one - my DS was born perfectly healthy

With my second - My DD was born with fluid in her lungs and low blood oxygen levels so she was in the NICU for four days.

My doctors made it sound very normal for c-section babies to have respiratory problems.


ETA - both babies were born at full term around 39.5 weeks.
