Re: BYOB - Bring Your Own Bag

Just thought of something else they can tax for waste. Tampons with an applicator.
Tons of plastic waste.
I think there is already a "tampon tax" I remember people being up in arms over it... but not due to the plastic wate

The city of Long Beach did this, this year. My only complaint is that It creates such a bottle neck at Stop and Shop now. You can no longer bag as items come down the conveyer belt because they keep bags under the register. So everything is bagged at the very end. Also some stores upgraded there bags to bigger thicker plastic and charge .10 cents.

I thought of this too. The lines are going to be that much worse now too!

It shouldn't...In CA, they have them out and the cashier just charges you for what you are using.

How does it work with self check out?
Because that is all I use at Target and the supermarket

It's probably on the honor system. Like when Target used to credit for using reusable bags...the self check out would ask if you have any. It doesn't do that anymore though

Yes Stop and shop used to ask about reusable bags and give you like 5 cents a bag back for using them.
So now I guess it's the flip side. 5 cents for NOT using them.

I love it. I live in Queens and was looking forward to the NYC fee going into effect until Cuomo put the kabosh on it. I carry resuables everywhere, it's no big deal. And if I had to put an evening gown in one so be it!

I think plastic bags should be banned altogether; that takes care of the issue of those who can't afford the fee to not have to pay if it's simply not available.

I live by the ocean. It's a fkg nightmare. They're in the water EVERYWHERE. It's disgusting.

Go to California. Plastic bags are anathema. They will give you the evil eye if they see you with a plastic bag! It's the culture there. We need to get smart and get over ourselves.

Chat Icon I'm surprised how many are upset with this. It's a step in the right direction even if for now they are still mass produced

Question- they sell dog poop bags that are eco-friendly... why not have those in supermarkets?

If women were in charge you'd be able to deduct the cost of your diva cup lol.

We are very eco friendly but this is one area I hadn't given much thought to. Then after the hurricane I had a friend in PR asking for donations of menstrual cups bc without water or garbage services other options weren't all that practical. So I donated and got one for myself. It's amazing to finish your cycle and have a virtually empty garbage in your bathroom. There are so many ways we could curb our waste but most people just don't want to change as we see in this thread.

I reuse my plastic bags to pick up dog poop when I run out of baggies, for my shoes when I put them in my purse, garbage cans in my house, throwing away smelly food in my garbage (double bag), liquids that I’m scared will leak when packing lunches... it’s endless how much I use these bags lol.

Also what if you are poor but not on welfare, do you have to bring in your W-2s?? There are people who work and just make it but are considered poor.

I forget where I saw it but there was info somewhere about calling the town for a free bag if you're in need.

That sounds like a lot of work for a bag. Lol

I've seen those cups but I can see them being a bit hard to insert properly to avoid leaks. I can also just see myself digging around to get it out.

I understand that it is better for the environment - but I know I am going to have issues with remembering to bring bags with me. They should roll out Supermarkets first then big retailers - I can't imagine walking through the mall with bags "just in case"

I have bags with me all the time. They roll up and take almost no space in my bag. But if you don't have one you pay 5 cents so no big deal. Maybe people will end up using half the bags bc they'll combine purchases from different stores. To me, that's still a nice improvement.

Yeah if you are mall shopping I can see paying for a bag in say Macy's and then just using that same bag for the purchases you make in other stores too.

So I was in Duane Reade and Suffolk County today, and they have a sign up that says due to the Suffolk County law they will be charging $0.05 for paper bags. They no longer have plastic bags after the first. So I'm confused why we're paying the $0.05 again? No plastic, only paper, and paper is recyclable!

The law applies to both paper and plastic bags.

Yes, I know. My point is, they have plastic bags today, but won't on the 1st, only paper. So this whole save the environment garbage spiel they are giving is a lie, since they are ONLY offering paper bags and still charging.

But I don't think that's the law, that's just the choice of this one particular store. Personally, I'd love if playoff bags were banned altogether, but they're not. My sister's town did that almost 10 years ago already.

I keep the bags in my car at all times. Once I unpack my groceries, the bags go back in the car. Otherwise, I would never remember them.

I do this too..the problem is I forget to bring them in the store with me Chat Icon

Lombardi's Market had the sign too and it even includes regular stores. I thought it was just the supermarket but now I realize it's like lowe's, home depot, macy's, target, home goods, michael's, EVERYTHING.... I mean that's a lot of reusable bags I need to buy and remember to have on me at all times. But oh well. I will do it but i agree it seems greedy from the stores and not to help the environment.

Ditto. It won't kill me. It's worth it for the convenience.
I've paid a lot more for a lot less convenience

I do have reusables for the supermarket. But DH does all the food shopping generally so that's on him most of the time

I love this idea..we are so backward in this country. They have been doing this in Europe for years and people young and old got on board and guess what?...they got used to it..carried their own bags with them and carried on wirh their lives
.
Zero drama!

Re: BYOB - Bring Your Own Bag

I can see why they would still charge for the paper bags. Paper is terrible for the environment too. It takes so much energy to make them and transport them, that even if you recycle them, it's still damaging the planet.

I think it's a good idea to charge people. I try to recycle my plastic bags but I always end up with a closet full. I'm embarrassed to bring all of them with me at once trying to shove them through the hole in the top of the tiny bins at Target or the grocery store. So I take 2 small bags at a time, but they always pile up. I have reusable bags, I just always forget to bring them in with me. Hopefully the new law will help me remember lol. If not, I can always pay the .05 but it will make me try harder and that will help the environment. I don't see this as a bad thing.
