envirosax these are the bags I keep in my purse, car, diaper bag, etc and use for clothes or random stores. They hold a ton and roll up to take up no space. They last forever and wash well. I've even given them as gifts bc they come in so many nice patterns.
And these are the produce bags I use.
FYI, both of these links were flagged on my computer as having a virus. Weird!
That's because the link got mangled. It's a combination of a link to this forum, and a link to amazon, so there are some unexpected characters.

I reuse my plastic bags to pick up dog poop when I run out of baggies, for my shoes when I put them in my purse, garbage cans in my house, throwing away smelly food in my garbage (double bag), liquids that I’m scared will leak when packing lunches... it’s endless how much I use these bags lol.
Also what if you are poor but not on welfare, do you have to bring in your W-2s?? There are people who work and just make it but are considered poor.
I forget where I saw it but there was info somewhere about calling the town for a free bag if you're in need.

Re: BYOB - Bring Your Own Bag
I never shop in Suffolk county & I have used my own bags for years & I find this annoying.
I keep a zip up reusable bag in my purse- I think I have had it about 15 years. ( I wash it) I get a lot of bags at work events, so we use those at the grocery store. We bought produce bags at Whole Foods, years ago--even the vendor at our farmer's market was impressed because he had never see them before.
Still, occasionally I buy more than I can fit in bags. OR I forget. Also, I use the paper bags from Whole Foods for my recycling ( I am in an apartment & don't have cans) I would pay 5 cents for this, but it is annoying because it is just going to the stores. I guess it is like the bottle deposit. I pay the 5 cents, but I never bring bottles back to the store. They go in my regular recycling.
Does Suffolk recycle plastic bags? In Westchester the stores have to take the bags back for recycling (but I guess not everyone bothers to bring them back). I do though, and I'd want my 5 cents back! And paper bags are also recyclable with the regular household paper.

I think it’s bs as well. I could see get rid of plastic go to paper. But this? It’s really a kick in the ass
It looks like I’ll be spending an extra $3-5 a month between groceries and target. I have a bunch of reusable stuff now, but if meat leaks, I’ll throw it away. Eggs break? Garbage. Milk leaking? Toss it. Those bags at a $1+ each - again... bs
From what I know, if the customer is paying with food stamps - no charge for bags.
They don’t effect the environment?
Didn't even think of that but yes, reusable bags are pretty unsanitary. Yuck. I use them for groceries but the thought of meat etc in them skeeves me
Just wash them! I throw mine in the wash all the time.
As for meat - I'm a vegetarian so maybe I'm not "in the know" but back in the day when I was a cashier at a supermarket, a lot of customers would use produce bags on their packages of meat.
Exactly this!! I have Canvas bags that I wash in addition to the thin reusable bags as well. I wash the canvas should anything leak in them and I put any meat I get from the store in a produce bag. I hardly ever buy meat from the store though, so that hardly affects me.

Re: BYOB - Bring Your Own Bag
If this were just grocery stores then I'd be annoyed but I'd pay the 5 cents and deal with it. But this is most stores. Running into Target for milk and bread? Better have your satchel or some large strong arms! Stopping at Modell's for a sweatshirt? Hope it isn't raining otherwise it will get wet on the way to the car! Who actually goes around day by day on errands to various places while carrying a stack of reusable bags? It's laughable. And what if I don't want to - do I just say "no thanks" and put my bagless purchases piled up in a cart, a la Costco? This is a scam intended solely to tax consumers under the guise of helping the environment. I, for one, will need to buy MORE plastic garbage bags than I usually do to make up for not being able to use the grocery bags for things. Not to mention how much slower the checkout line is going to be as the cashiers now need to count bags after you pack everything and before they total your bill. Also, I bet stores will suffer - I am on the Nassau/Suffolk border and I always grocery shop in Suffolk but I will now mostly all the time shop in Nassau. And who is getting all this plastic bag 5 cent money? The stores, the government? And what is it being used for? Notice how THAT wasn't in all the notices about this law.

Disposable diapers are very bad for the environment too. Why are they not charging 5 cents per diaper? And K cups for the Keurig machine. Excess plastic waste. They should tax those too.

I hope everyone is posting these comments on the FB page for the county! Let them hear how stupid this is! Most people probably don't even realize that the money charged is going to the store, not to the environment!

Re: BYOB - Bring Your Own Bag
I love it. I live in Queens and was looking forward to the NYC fee going into effect until Cuomo put the kabosh on it. I carry resuables everywhere, it's no big deal. And if I had to put an evening gown in one so be it!
I think plastic bags should be banned altogether; that takes care of the issue of those who can't afford the fee to not have to pay if it's simply not available.
I live by the ocean. It's a fkg nightmare. They're in the water EVERYWHERE. It's disgusting.
Go to California. Plastic bags are anathema. They will give you the evil eye if they see you with a plastic bag! It's the culture there. We need to get smart and get over ourselves.

Agreed! we use disposable diapers. Really didn't' consider the alternatives. I do see how it is wasteful, however, that is one that i'd pay the tax.
K Cups are wasteful and don't even make the best coffee.
I view this whole thing as a positive. Yes people knew before about the environment but the vast majority of people do nothing. This at least gets people talking about it, maybe modifying habits.
Yes you will have to change your habits and it may be a pain for a while. But, that is exactly what this is about, changing the norm, to stop being so wasteful.
grocery shopping I use these https://packingsorted.com/
I find it really helps.

The city of Long Beach did this, this year. My only complaint is that It creates such a bottle neck at Stop and Shop now. You can no longer bag as items come down the conveyer belt because they keep bags under the register. So everything is bagged at the very end. Also some stores upgraded there bags to bigger thicker plastic and charge .10 cents.
I thought of this too. The lines are going to be that much worse now too!
It shouldn't...In CA, they have them out and the cashier just charges you for what you are using.

Re: BYOB - Bring Your Own Bag
I'm not against an initiative to eliminate these bags, but that's not what is happening. The bags will still be mass produced and shipped to stores, and people will still be using them and then choosing to throw them away or reuse them. Some will be paying the tax for them and some won't. And these dreaded bags will still be in circulation, still destroying the environment. It's just that now the majority of people will have to pay for them (unless they choose to bring their own). Why are people on a low income exempt from destroying the environment? Why do the stores get to keep the tax? Why isn't the tax being collected by the state to offset recycling costs and implement more effective recycling programs? It's shady and corrupt. It's not being implemented to be more green. It's being implemented to give the stores more green. They should get rid of these bags altogether. There are less wasteful alternatives.

Re: BYOB - Bring Your Own Bag
Been using reusable bags for years, I keep them in the car so I don't forget them. They are plastic ones I bought from Waldbaums, love them because they have long handles and I can wipe them out with a clorox wipe. One is used only for meats. They are starting to get really beat up, so I have to start looking for good replacements. The blue bags from Ikea are pretty good too, very big. We use them primarily as laundry bags.

This. It will be a separate line item on a receipt which can be easily reconciled at the end of the day. It's another method of sending money up because business owners will profit because those bags don't cost a nickel and their cost is already factored into their overhead (thus, a double bonus).

BYOB - Bring Your Own Bag
I'm really shocked by how many people are against this. I shop at Aldi for years now. They don't have bags anyway. So I am used to bringing my own. I always bring my own bags to target or walmart. I hate plastic bags. I feel like if I save them I am giving bugs a place to live. It's just the way my mind works. When I do get some, I throw them away. I really hate having them in the house. But I reuse a lot of stuff that people normally would not. And I have also eliminated 95% of the paper towels my family uses. It's amazing how much money you save.

I use the grocery bags to clean out the litter box. I probably will pay the $0.05 per bag . I usually forget my shopping list so trying to remember to bring bags will not be much better.

It is the standard in Europe to pay for bags if you forget your own and you also have to put money in a shopping cart to get it out of the return area -- you get your coin back when you return it to it's rightful place.
I have seen it in a lot of US cities too while traveling.
I keep bags everywhere. Some are specifically for groceries and some are for other shopping so that food and clothes aren't going in the same bag -- YES I walk around the mall with reusable bags.

Re: BYOB - Bring Your Own Bag
I don't think people are against this. I think people are against the way this is being half-assed. The stores should have to collect the tax and then turn it over to the state, not pocket the money. I just don't see how this will work logistically. When you buy a bottle of water the 5 cents is automatically tacked on at the register. There's no manual counting involved. So now they're going to ring up my giant shopping cart worth of groceries (for the next snowstorm ) and then count how many bags are used, including double bagging, while other people behind me are waiting to check out their equally overflowing shopping carts lol.
Again, just to be clear, I am ALL FOR getting rid of these plastic bags COMPLETELY. Let's altogether stop making them and using them. I sometimes remember to bring my reusable bags with me, and sometimes I don't. If they do away with these bags completely (the way I think they should!) then I'll just HAVE TO remember to keep bags on me and in my car. Aldi's, BJ's, Costco, etc. already don't provide bags and people manage to still shop there. People will get used to it and before you know it will become second nature. The state should come up with a better plan to get EVERYONE to ditch these bags, not just those who can afford to. Does it really help the environment at all if resources are still being used to manufacture these bags and then deliver them to stores?
