The city of Long Beach did this, this year. My only complaint is that It creates such a bottle neck at Stop and Shop now. You can no longer bag as items come down the conveyer belt because they keep bags under the register. So everything is bagged at the very end. Also some stores upgraded there bags to bigger thicker plastic and charge .10 cents.
I thought of this too. The lines are going to be that much worse now too!

Re: BYOB - Bring Your Own Bag
I think it’s great! They charge in Germany at all supermarkets for bags. It’s usually about 15 cents. I always have bags in my car or bag if I make an unplanned visit. It’s been like this for years. Plus you have to move quick at the German check out as no one packs your bags. It’s a fine art I tell you.
The shops (department stores, H&M, etc.) have recently started to do this, too. I was a bit annoyed that they did this, but I have now gotten used to it.
It really makes you aware of the plastic you use. And, hey, it’s another way to shop for cute shopping bags!

I wonder how this will work for home deliveries like peapod. I have plenty of reusable bags that I'd be happy to use, but peapod comes in plastic bags. Will they just automatically charge me?
I don’t know how it works there, but here they do not charge for bags (it’s paper here) for home delivery. You can give them back the next delivery, so they can recycle them.

I think it’s bs as well. I could see get rid of plastic go to paper. But this? It’s really a kick in the ass
It looks like I’ll be spending an extra $3-5 a month between groceries and target. I have a bunch of reusable stuff now, but if meat leaks, I’ll throw it away. Eggs break? Garbage. Milk leaking? Toss it. Those bags at a $1+ each - again... bs
From what I know, if the customer is paying with food stamps - no charge for bags.
They don’t effect the environment?
Didn't even think of that but yes, reusable bags are pretty unsanitary. Yuck. I use them for groceries but the thought of meat etc in them skeeves me

Yeah, thats pretty gross. I will probably bring some reusable bags for dry/non-perishable foods, but will just pay the 5 cents for a plastic bag for meats/eggs. That s if I'm shopping at a regular grocery store, bc actually I usually shop at Costco and bjs and they don't have bags at all, just boxes which 99% of the time I forget to grab anyway

I'm curious to know if people who use plastic bags to dispose of stinky diapers and/or dog poop will just pay the 5 cents per bag or buy other types of plastic bags for those purposes. I have to do the math, but I think it would cost about the same if not more to buy the little rolls of dog poop/diaper bags.
They could use the produce bags : ) We buy the rolls of bags. I hate the lavender smell, but I like having the little roll of bags in my diaper bag. We started using them before putting in the diaper genie too because they help to keep it from smelling.
Maybe, but the produce bags are so thin and rip so easily. I wouldn't want to try picking up dog poop with those guess I'll have to buy bags. Amazon has a 200 count of plastic bags for diapers for $7.37, so it's a little less expensive than paying for the grocery bags. Although those only get one use (throwing out a diaper) while grocery bags get used to bring home groceries in a sanitary way and can be reused for disposing diapers/as garbage bags/lunch bags/picking up pet waste/donating clothes, etc...i never just throw plastic bags away on their own, they do have a lot of uses.

Love this rule, wish it was everywhere.
I have reusable totes in the trunk, in a basket by my front door, one rolled up in a pouch in my bag, a few in my desk drawer for shopping during my lunch break.
I've been doing this since I was a teen. It's second nature.

Just wash them! I throw mine in the wash all the time.
As for meat - I'm a vegetarian so maybe I'm not "in the know" but back in the day when I was a cashier at a supermarket, a lot of customers would use produce bags on their packages of meat.

The produce bags will still be available for free so I'm guessing they'll probably still have them in the meat section too. I have a ton of old plastic bags so I keep a few with my reusable ones and use that for meat. As for the reusable ones, you can wash them now and then or if they get dirty.

I don't really see the big deal. If you don't want to do it pay the 5 cents. Obviously some people are going to pay for plastic and probably almost everyone will now and then. At least this should lead to a significant reduction. Not sure how anyone can see that as a negative.

BYOB - Bring Your Own Bag
I keep reusable bags in my car but constantly forget to bring them in when i shop. Based on principal, i could see myself foregoing buying the bag and just carrying my purchases or putting the items back in the shopping cart and wheeling it out to my car. My question is how stores will manage security/shoplifters at retail stores and malls? They can’t force people to buy the bags so if i buy a shirt at Macy’s at one counter and want to carry it around or stick it in my purse or in the stroller bottom and then go to a different section and make a purchase there, etc, will they have security guards at every exit to check which receipts and items i paid for? What happens when i walk through the mall with unbagged purchases from other stores? Isnt it going to be a logistical nightmare for non-food retail stores?

BYOB - Bring Your Own Bag
I always put my meat in a produce bag when I buy it, in fact, they are right there near the meat. Skeeves me out to have meat not in a bag just hanging out in my shopping cart

I put meat in the extra produce bag they have by the meat case as well. but it doesn't cover it completely. Even putting 2 (which I do - one over each end) It's not sealed perfectly. Sometimes the meat has that meat smell too. Which is why it's always in it's own plastic bag when I bag my own stuff. Imagine that smell in a reusable bag?
I know a PP said just wash the bags, I cannot see them washing well. I will try it for sure. But they are that plastic-ish material and probably need to be hand washed. I don't even buy clothes that need to be hand washed. I didn't buy the smaller canvas ones because they were more $. I will pay the money on plastic bags before I start buying reusable bags that are more than a $1+tx. I grabbed like 10 of them from homegoods over the past few months waiting for this to happen.
Again.. I get the plastic thing. Then go paper. And the fact is the retailers are keeping the 5 cents. Like another PP said, if it was going towards helping the environment I could possibly be less annoyed, but it's not.
ETA: And the fact that some people are exempt also pisses me off. Someone like my mother (who doesn't live here so it doesnt affect her yet) Who doesn't qualify for public assistance (how I couldn't tell you) would have to pay 5 cents per bag at the store. She's 78 years old. I could see it causing an uproar every time she is there. She literally can't afford to pay more for anything. So if she did live here, I'd have to buy her bags as well while some people who met qualifications for WIC could get 50 bags without it causing an issue with the environment.
The whole thing is bs

Yes. See if I thought for a second this was being done to help the environment I'd say- ok, it's worth the inconvenience, extra cost, whatever. But like you pointed out, there are way too many indications that it is not. Just like red light cameras. That's the negative I see in this.

What about all the plastic bags you put the produce in? Going to take those away or start charging for those too? I wouldn't want my produce just laying in my reusable bags.
For meat I use those produce plastic bags too then they go in my reusable.
I always remember the reusable bags for grocery shopping (I have a note on my coupon holder so I remember). I can't imagine carrying around reusable bags around the mall.

I'm going to Bloomingdale's to buy an evening gown. Let me get out my canvas tote. Maybe we can fold the dress up nice and small to fit in it. Or I can bring a few and we can fashion them together to cover the dress like one of those big garment size bags.

That's what it's going to be like What kind of non-plastic bag is going to fit over a gown/suit/coat, etc!??!

envirosax these are the bags I keep in my purse, car, diaper bag, etc and use for clothes or random stores. They hold a ton and roll up to take up no space. They last forever and wash well. I've even given them as gifts bc they come in so many nice patterns.

BYOB - Bring Your Own Bag
I think this is a great idea and I wish it would go into effect nationwide. Plastic bags are a HUGE issue. They never break down and cause so many environmental problems. I already use reusable bags at the supermarket. Once people start using them in other stores, it won't seem so silly - it will become a new norm. I remember watching a video in the early 2000s saying how Europe used reusable bags at the grocery stores and I was like yeah right - that will never catch on here. Now when I go to the store, most of the shoppers are using them. As for things like eggs and meat, have a designated bag for those items and wash it after each use. I usually don't even put eggs in a bag - just keep them loose to ensure nothing crushes them.

Re: BYOB - Bring Your Own Bag
I'm all for initiatives to reduce waste and especially plastic bags because they're so harmful to the environment and let's be real, those things pile up like mail and laundry very quickly even if you are conscious to reuse them. But, that's not what it sounds like is happening here. It should be across the board, no exemptions. What sense does it make that lower income people are exempt if the bags will still be in circulation - they're still harmful to the environment regardless of one's income. And why do the stores get to keep the money? Who keeps the 5 cents for unreturned bottle deposits?
The reality is that supermarkets have been getting stingier and stingier with shopping bags because they don't want to pay for them. I even saw a sign posted in a supermarket that asked customers to be conscious of how many bags they take because they aren't cheap! This after you literally had to ask a cashier for bags because they were hidden behind the counter.
All the concerns stated in this thread are valid. I don't think this is well thought out at all. This sounds like yet another tax on the middle class.

I think it's a BS excuse but I don't mind doing it. I buy those $1 totes at Marshalls and they're perfect. I keep a bunch in my trunk. But I think it'll be really annoying at other stores.

I reuse every plastic bag as a garbage bag, so now I have to buy plastic garbage bags... which are also not good for the environment... so doesn't that defeat the whole purpose? Stupid and just a way to get our money. And the low income people are exempt from the fee... So taking care of the environment is the sole responsibility of those of us who can afford to do so? How does that make any sense?
Agree. I have a small garbage can under my kitchen sink and re-use plastic grocery store bags as garbage bags. I’d have to buy separate garbage bags (and they’d be plastic obviously) with this new policy. So more expensive for me and zero help to the environment. I live OOS but this is also going into effect by me soon.

Re: BYOB - Bring Your Own Bag
I reuse my plastic bags to pick up dog poop when I run out of baggies, for my shoes when I put them in my purse, garbage cans in my house, throwing away smelly food in my garbage (double bag), liquids that I’m scared will leak when packing lunches... it’s endless how much I use these bags lol.
Also what if you are poor but not on welfare, do you have to bring in your W-2s?? There are people who work and just make it but are considered poor.
