British 'Couples Retreat' Posters Leave Out Black Couple
If you live in Britain, you won't see Faizon Love and Kali Hawk on the movie posters for 'Couples Retreat,' like you would in America.
The pair -- who are both black -- has been left off the promotional photo in the U.K., while the rest of the white actors remain.
According to The Daily Mail, Universal -- the studio behind the film -- claims they wanted to "simplify" the posters for the English audience. However, they apologized for offending anyone.

Re: British 'Couples Retreat' Posters Leave Out Black Couple
Is it possible that they weren't as central to the cast as the others, or didn't get top billing because they're not as well known?
Except for their names and one other, I recognize all the names on those posters. I could be wrong but I don't think movie posters usually contain 8 cast members on them. Unless it's one of those star studded casts like the Ocean series.
I don't know, maybe I'm naive but I'd like to think that it isn't always about color. You can't see the cast members as well in the poster with all of them in it too.

Re: British 'Couples Retreat' Posters Leave Out Black Couple
Why just use the "simplified" version for the UK?
If a poster is bad, it's bad everywhere.
I find it disturbing especially if some posters had the couple and some posters did not.
What's next? They edit the scene with the black couple too?

So now they insult the British too by needing to SIMPLIFY for them? What are they stupid? Another 2 people for the British would just send them into a tailspin!!!!!!!

I was thinking the same thing.
Also in terms of appeal - the poster on the right seems to pop more because the characters are closely cropped. Not saying they have to be black or white actors - just not as many.

Re: British 'Couples Retreat' Posters Leave Out Black Couple
they're barely visible in the US poster, maybe because they're not know actors?

Re: British 'Couples Retreat' Posters Leave Out Black Couple
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't most European countries waaayyy more progressive when it comes to race than the US. Many foreign-made films have interracial couples (Love, Actually for one) and Heidi Klum has mentioned that in Europe their family is considered "normal" compared to here.
I just don't get the intention of leaving them out. Maybe it is just some sort of misunderstanding?

It does pop more. So ITA but then they should have used one type of poster not two completely different onces where a misunderstanding like this would casue an issue.

I'm more upset about the font being slightly larger than on the original! I mean, why discriminate against smaller font? And the use of Bold...I mean, its just silly that they didn't stick with the original.
I would bet that no one in Britain knows who *any* of these actors are! lol.

Exactly! Why using both posters if it's too small to see the actors? Do they better vision in the US vs Britain? The fact that they kept BOTH posters is the reason for the raising of the eyebrows.

Check out all the different movie posters for Love Actually: Google image results for Love Actually movie poster
I think you would be hard pressed to find a movie that had more than two stars that didn't have at least two or more variations of the advertising poster. This isn't an isolated incident, it happens all the time that people are left out of some advertisements. I just think it's being spun to get a desired effect.

Its not that there are two versions that is the issue--Thats common certainly. Its that no one on their marketing team thought this through that people of a certain race might get offended. To me this was irresponsible and thier explaination raises eyebrows.

I'm sure there are a lot of people of all races who have been offended at being left off movie posters. My point is that it's possible that it was not due to the race of the people left off and there could be plenty of valid reasons they weren't on the different poster.
Since none of us know the whole story, it's open to speculation, and mine is that I'm not going to assume the worst, especially when a news story spins it that way because I'm untrusting of media. I don't know as much about marketing as a studio, but I know aesthetically, a less crowded poster is going to be more appealing. I'm surprised they tried to put eight people on one poster in the first place.
Has anyone seen this movie? Are Faizon Love and Kali Hawk as central to the plot as the other couples?

My issue is the half baked response....At least that could have been thought out better. Or they could have distributed both versions everywhere kindo of like how Glamour does its women of the year. Yes I would like to think its innocent but I work in HR and staff for many jobs including marketing so I am privy to behind the scenes and yes I would like to think it is innocent but..... We will never know...so maybe they need better PR people

This is wrong plain and simple.
Their names are even taken out of the credits in the second poster.
I believe there is something more to just "simplyfing it" for the audience.

Re: British 'Couples Retreat' Posters Leave Out Black Couple
I don't understand how it is wrong-unless someone has seen the movie and can confirm that they have the same size role as the other featured actors.
If so, then yes I would say it is wrong. If not then I don't see the issue.
I do think the first poster looks too cluttered and I do think it looks better with one less couple.
Just which couple ends up on the cutting room floor would depend upon the size of the roles.
