I have been paranoid since I lived in a first floor apartment in Queens. We were broken into once and twice attempted, once through and open window in the back when my mom was home (luckily someone saw the guy before he was all the way in--and that was with bars on the windows!). I also had a peeping Tom outside my window and I didn't sleep in my room again for 3 months following that and I never opened the window again.
I only leave the windows open now if DH is up late in the living room and the dog is out there, who barks at any little noise. I also can't stand listening to my nieghbors, so the AC is usually on from the get-go.

I had DS' window closed last night, but ours was open. I put a fan in the hallway blowing into both of our rooms so it stayed cool.
Downstairs windows were closed and locked.

YES!!! I run around the house at night and make sure they are all shut before I go to bed.

Same. But we really have no choice in the matter....
Honestly, and this isn't a flame, I should have even read this post b/c I have to put this all out of my mind since I am home alone most nights and I'd freak if I *really* thought about it, you know?

We have a 3 floor split level - only the windows on the top floor where our bedrooms are are kept open at night- someone would need a ladder to climb up to them and we'd obvioulsy hear that racket.

Nah, we leave all the windows open all the time.
I didn't in our old house, but in the new one we have much higher windows, plus motion sensor lights and Slomin.
Oh, and the 110 pounds of barking Black Lab helps deter people too.

I have the same concerns that you have. We have the CAC on ALL the time from early June into September. I won't keep the windows open. I will only keep the front door open if it's during the day and DH or another adult family member is here (and the screen door would be locked). Forget going anywhere and keeping the windows open---we never do that. It's probably time for us to get an alarm.

We leave our windows open but I live on the 14th floor so unless you are a bird or spiderman there is no way.
If I had a house and the bedrooms or anything was on the first floor I would not leave the windows opened. I'm too paranoid about burglaries.

I don't leave my windows open unless I am home and awake. At night and when we're out the windows are closed and the alarm is on.

I feel the same way. I always shut the windows before I go to bed. DH doesn't feel the same way though and fights with me about keeping our bedroom window open at night.
