Another CAC question

So our house was winterized over the winter when we were living in SC.

The company that did it, didn't do it right and our copper pipes for our baseboard heating burst.

So, we our homeowners is covering it.

Today, we had a plummer come for an estimate and he said for the amount of money its going to be to fix the pipes (close to 10,000) we may want to consider just having CAC installed.

Now for those who have it installed, does your heat come out of that too? Right now we have oil heat. What happens to the baseboards?

When we were in SC our CAC was the same as our heating. I just didn't know if it would be any different here.

Re: Another CAC question

If you have forced hot air heat(which you do not if you have baseboards) then the heat and A/C can come out of the same vent. If you have baseboard heat, then it is an entire seperate system.

Re: Another CAC question

With our addition, we had CAC installed. We removed all the baseboard heating, and put heating and CAC ductwork throughout the house. We figured, if you have ducts for AC, might as well use the same vents for heat. Otherwise, you have spots on the floor you can't use because of the CAC, and other areas of the floor you can't use because of the baseboard heating. Might as well consolidate it and have less obstructions in each room.

Thanks! That was what I was looking for. I thought it would have been an odd thought for the plummer to recommend we just get CAC knowing that we needed heat.

How much work was it to remove the baseboards?

Removing them is pretty easy. They just turn off the water and drain the pipes, then saw off the supply pipes to the baseboards. When possible, they remove the pipes from the wall, but since they aren't functional, they don't have to remove the pipes when it would mean damaging the walls.
You do need to repair the floor where the pipes come through, though.

There's nothing wrong with that setup. I just personally didn't want two systems, and the extra wall space it would take.
