Re: AM I RAISING A SPOILED BRAT?

Here's the opposite opinion:

I rocked my DS to sleep. He slept great, but I had to rock him or put him in the swing.

Fast forward 3 years, he still won't nap unless you rock him to sleep. Try explaining that to a baby sitter. We did CIO for bedtime eventually (he outgrew swings) but it never worked for naps.

DD, child #2 was just stuck into the crib starting 3 months. She cried... And then stopped. She sleeps great at 22 months.

So, yes, I think you can spoil a 4 month old... And yes, habits are harder to break when the kid is older.

My advice: put the kid to sleep when you know she's tired and just put her down. No fussing.

i attempted CIO at 4 months and couldnt do it - dd got too worked up so i continued rocking her and nursing her to sleep every night. finally around 5 months we broke that habit by doing CIO. i dont think at 4 months you are spoiling that baby.

you should do what you feel comfortable with...some do cio at 4 months and others at 1 year.

What!! Spoil a 4 MO? Please...4MO is still a newborn IMO. You cannot spoil a newborn no how no way. There is no way I would do cry it out at that age. Babies need to feel warmth and be rocked. Get a new ped ASAP.

Re: AM I RAISING A SPOILED BRAT?

First of all - 4 month old babies are incapable of being brats ......spoiled, (IMO) yes, but not brats!!

With any and all things routine/habit related, it's completely up to you -
If YOU don't mind having to rock your child to sleep for what will most likely be an extended period of time, then rock her to sleep ..........
but if it's not something youi're going to want to have to deal with, or a 'bad habit' you will hvae to break later on ......my advice is the earlier you stop (with anything) the better ......

I let my kids CIO to a point ......from when they were babies, bed time was bed time - end of story -

If they were crying, I'd let them, and 8 of 10 times they'd fall asleep after a few minutes .......f they were crying & screaming bloody murder to the point that as their mother, knowing my kids, I KNEW they were way past the point of calming themselves down, I'd go in there and rock them. It wasn't every night, for the most part they were fine on their own ........

If you don't want to continue to rock her consistently, at 4 months, I'd say try to put her down awake, but sleepy, let her cry a bit, don't rush in there as soon as she starts.

the most important thing is to go with what YOU are comfortable with and take the advice YOU think will be useful to you, or your lifestyle, or parenting style -
I had many friends and cousins with babies before me - EVERYONE has an opinion b/c of course, everyone is doing what they think is best for their children - listen to those people, what worked for them, what didn't, what their aggravation and "OMG I wish I did or didn't do this" advice is .......and then adapt what you feel comfortable with -
you don't need a new Dr. - You are not required to take your Ped's advice either .......Chat Icon

Re: AM I RAISING A SPOILED BRAT?

I really miss the days of holding DD until she fell asleep on me. Now if I'm around she wants to play. But once she's tired, she's ready for the crib and usually just goes to sleep. I did "CIO" usually she was very sleepy when we placed her in the crib and would let her fuss and sometimes cry. If CIO is something you want to do you will know when it's time and if it's even right for you.

I would never call a 4 month old a spoiled brat. I do think they learn habits at this age though, so yes, if you keep rocking her to sleep she is going to expect it. It becomes a learned behavior for her to expect the rocking. You can start to wean her off your rocking by first having her rocked to sleep in the swing. Then you can transfer her to the crib. After that works, you could try having her fall asleep in the swing without it moving. Eventually, you would have her just in the crib. This would be a way to do it without having her CIO. However, IMO, 4 months is not too young for CIO and I have done a modified version of it already with my 4.5 month old. You have to do what you are comfortable with!

I love this advice. I don't think that a 4 month old is spoiled, but at 4 months, a child definitely forms habits/learned behaviors, so yes, rocking to sleep every night can lead to the possibility of it being more difficult for your DD to fall asleep on her own. I love the above suggested technique for gradually getting your DD used to not being rocked to sleep in your arms.

The only one that called the baby a brat is the OP in the title.

The Ped never did just said she was spoiled.

If my ped told me to let my 4 month old cio, i'd be looking for a new pediatrician. You cannot spoil a 4 month old. I would establish a bedtime routine and stick to it every night. With both of my kids, I would bathe them then we would read books and then they would have their last bottle. Then they would be put down in their crib with music and their projector. I would start establishing a routine and she will get it soon enough.

For real! She is an infant thrown from a warm dark comfortable place into a bright scary noisy world! You are her comfort. Your smell, your heartbeat, etc. When she gets to be about 6 mos you might try some limited CIO but not before then. Good luck. I know how hard it isChat Icon

Re: AM I RAISING A SPOILED BRAT?

my DD is almost 8 months, and i still rock her to sleep every night.
It is my personal opinion that using CIO on a 4 month old is wrong, they are too young (again, my personal opinion) that they still need to feel that sense of security.
I rock my DD and within 10 minutes she falls asleep and she will sleep for 12 hours every night. It works for me and my DH.
However, if my ped told me i was spoiling my DD because i rock her to sleep, i would switch ped.

Re: AM I RAISING A SPOILED BRAT?

I am so shocked at the number of people who would immediately ditch their pediatrician b/c they told you something you didn't want to hear!

He's not forcing you to vaccinate your baby, he's not pumping her full of meds, he's not, god forbid, missing, or misdiagnosing a major health issue - he's just giving his opinion, and a suggestion that's all it is. You don't have to agree with him, and you certainly don't HAVE to do what he tells you to do.

Just b/c he's a MD doesn't mean his OPINION is law .....
My Ped told me not to feed the kids 'too much" not to give them a bottle w/ their meal, to drop the bottle by 12 months, that they didn't need the dentist until a certain age, to let them CIO -
IMO, babies eat b/c they are hungry, not bored, it's not like they're forcing down that slice of choc. cake! So, if my kids wanted to eat, I fed them, regardless of what the Ped though about their caloire intake. My almost 2.5 year old is JUST now completely off the bottle, my 4.5 year old had the pacifier until he was over 3 and I was brushing their teeth and taking them to the dentist well before it was 'necessary' per my Ped - I also let them sleep on their bellies .......

Just b/c someone tells you to do something as a parent, doesn't mean you have to do it! I'm sure the OP is perfectly capable of making her own choice re: what to do.

I rocked DS to sleep most of his first year and now paying a price for it. With DD ... I started letting her cry herself to sleep at 6-7 months ...if the crying went on beyond a half hour then I would attend to her. She is now 14 months and putting her to bed is easier than my son who is 3.5.

AM I RAISING A SPOILED BRAT?

Take this for what it is worth : my mom co-slept with me until 2, wore me all the time and rocked / nursed me to sleep when I needed it. I never had separation anxiety as a child. I was an independent child and remain an independent adult. I never had trouble falling asleep or staying asleep ( to this day ) When a child's needs are responded to at a young age that sense of security is internalized and allows for a true sense of independence as the child grows. A spoiled child develops when the parents fail to set appropriate boundaries and are overly permissive. Lots of hugs, love and attention builds healthy , happy kids.

AM I RAISING A SPOILED BRAT?

I still rock DS for a few minutes at night and he is 18 months. I'm a FTWM and I enjoy that time between us. We cuddle, read a book, giggle for a few minutes, practice things like "where is Mommy's ears?", then I rock and sing for 5 minutes and he's out cold. If he wakes up when I put him in his crib, he rolls over an goes back to sleep.

Time goes so fast, and one day, he won't want to cuddle. Do what feels right - don't worry about what others think.

For me, my ped and I didnt agree for about 4 months worth of my infants' lives. It got old pretty quickly and I was tired of having to defend my decision not to CIO at 4 months or wait to give solids at 6 months.
After a while, he stopped respecting my decisions and got snide. THat's why I decided to leave and move on.

I totally agree,4 mo is too young. I held my daughter every night to fall asleep and like the other poster you need to get into a routine. Once they recognize that it makes life so much easier. DH thought we would never be able to sleep without me holding her but she gradually got used to the routine and now by the time I finish Good night moon shes already in her crib stretched out and eyes closed. SHes 15 mo but we started around 8mo really with the routine. We did CIO but she was much older than 4 mo.
