? about TV in a child's room

At what age do you think it is appropriate to put a TV in a child's room? There is some controversey going on over here in my house.

If your child does have a TV what do they use it for? Is it hooked up to cable or just used for DVD/Video Games?

Jack doesn't have a TV in his room yet - but my father is obsessed with getting a flat screen to put up in there. I will probably let him buy him one when he is 5 or so.

My son is 6.
He's had the TV in his room for the past 4 years. 3 of those years it sat untouched. When he turned 5, we solely started to use it for his video games (plug n plays).

The twins got a TV in their room when they were 3...strictly DVDs. At about 5 we hooked up the cable...Honestly I would love to take the TVs out of their rooms...

No TV. Most likely not until a teenager.

There is a TV in our LR and upstairs in the spare room/computer/playroom.

I total control of what is being watched.

Re: ? about TV in a child's room

My daughter has had her own tv since she was six. Mainly for dvds and PS. We have parental controls to block certain channels as well, so she only watches disney, nickelodeon etc. She rarely watches it in her room, would rather watch tv in the living room.

Same here. We have a tv in our room (which is barely watched) and the den... that's it. There will be no tv's in the bedrooms. We might put a tv in the basement for them when they get older.

As a high school teacher, I have a lot of students who have tv's in their room, with cable and have had them for years. Based upon the conversations I overhear, their parents have NO idea what they are watching... many completely inappropriate shows for their age group/maturity level. They also stay up to all hours and then are Chat Icon in class. Unfortunately, for many, it shows in the grades.

Same goes for the computer and gaming... they are chatting or playing away to all hours of the night. Again, their parents have no idea what they are looking at or whom they are chatting to.

Once the computer, gaming system, tv is in the room there is no getting it out. I've seen many a parent try to fight that battle.

ETA: My dad worked for the phone company and could wire a phone while sleeping. I didn't even have an extension in my room until I was 24 and a grad student living at home. Years later, he told me why... he wanted to know who was calling me.

there is one in my DC's room. When one of us is home alone and need to get ready for work its "safe" entertainment in a safe place.

DH and I don't plan on ever putting a tv or computer in their rooms. They can watch in the family room just like I did growing up. DH and his brother had tvs in their rooms and he said that growing up his family never ate dinner together. He was in his room, BIL was in his room, FIL was in the den and MIL was in the dining room. He didn't like it and is dead set against tvs in the kids rooms.

I'm not saying that's the norm, that's just what his experience was and what colors his decision.

I don't think until he's at least a teenager, maybe older.
I think once I started babysitting and earning some money, my parents let me get one.
We may do the same.

We have a TV in the den and up in our bedroom and the only time the one in bedroom is used is if I want to watch something completley different from what DH is watching.

No TV (or computer) in the bedrooms until they go away to college and have their own dorm room! Chat Icon That's how I was raised, and even as 1 of 6 kids, there was never much of a fight over the tv in the den. I want them to interact with their family and be a part of the activities.

ITA. I have also read that t.v. in the bedroom can create a lot of sleep issues.

Nicholas had one, but it became a problem so he is without one forever. He has a TV problem and would be watching it all night long.

yeah, Matthew got one from my parents for Christmas. We haven't hooked it up yet because he doesn't do anything in his room but sleep and he falls asleep in our room. I had a tv in my room as a kid and I think I can agree that it could lead to sleeping problems. His has a dvd player built in so when we do get around to hooking it up it will be einstein dvd's only. We'll see. I asked them not to buy it but was ignored.

Re: ? about TV in a child's room

Even though I'm a big proponent of TV (see some of the other TV posts), I don't want TVs in DC's rooms. It's too easy for them to do things that I'm not aware of, watch TV when they shouldn't, etc. If they want to watch TV, they can do it with the family (we'll most likely have a separate one in the play room, but it's still a public room).

Julia is 2 1/2 and has a TV in her room, she doesn't watch it during the day, just to help her go to sleep at night....one of her disney dvds'.

Scotty got one in his room when he was 9. He's only allowed to watch it for 1/2 hour before going to bed.

Re: ? about TV in a child's room

No TV in Troy's room right now. Not sure when/if there ever will be. I did not have one in my room until I was 13, and it was a tiny B&W w/ phone/radio/clock.

ETA: Not judging, but I know someone who put a TV in her daughter's room when she was 15 mos. Why? Because she (the mom) was sick of watching Wiggles and Teletubbies. Chat Icon

Re: ? about TV in a child's room

My 10yr old has a tv in his rm and he watches it more at night. He plays many sports and does very well in school so I'm not concerned with the tv situation for him. My almost 3yr old has a tv also in his rm, his is used for his smart cycle and dvd's sometimes.

We're not putting TVs in their rooms. DH is against it because he feels it was easy for him to cut off his family & shut himself off in a room growing up.

I agree with it. I'd rather them be watching in a common area. It's not because I worry about appropriate TV viewing. For me, it's a way of connecting more with them - even if it's me telling them to quiet down.

I had a TV in my room when I was a kid since I was 6. No problems in school, no issues with interacting with family at all. We plan to get DS a TV eventually.

Re: ? about TV in a child's room

I do not believe that children should have a TV in their room. IMO that's one way that parents can lose control over what their kids are watching. I did not get a TV in my room until I was 18 and that is what I plan on doing with DD also.

We didn't know what to do with the TV from our guest room turned nursery, so we put it in our older one's room. It has no cable and only has a built in VCR. So he has one Elmo tape and one Bob the Builder tape. He is barely in his room anyway.

If we had a guest room, it would probably not be in his room.
