TV In Child's Room

Do you think we should put a TV in Marissa's room? She is 6 and I'm not too sure about doing that. What do you guys think?

Re: TV In Child's Room

I never had a tv in my room, even as a teenager. My parents said they would never see us! They were probably right.

Re: TV In Child's Room

My dd has had a TV in her room since she was 2 1/2. The reason was that we were buying a new one so we just put it in her room. It is a BIG help when we want to watch something and are tired of seeing cartoons. She also got a VHS player 2 years ago and a DVD player this year. She is 7 1/2.

My kids will not have a TV in their bedroom until they get their own house Chat Icon My thought is that if they want to watch TV they can come watch with the family.

DH is adamant that we don't have tvs in the kids rooms. He and his brother had them growing up and he said they never spent time together as a family. Everyone came home from work or school and went into separate rooms and that was it for the night. They even ate dinner alone in their rooms. I know this isn't the norm, but it really bothered him and this is something he feels strongly about.

My brother and I never had tv or phone in our rooms growing up.

I am against having TV's in the kids room. That's why we have a FAMILY room.

My dh is the same way, same reason. I see his point. We won't be having one in either of our kids rooms - or video games there either.

Re: TV In Child's Room

My friend's two kids have TVs in their rooms- 4 and 6 years old. I do not agree with it at all.

Molly can have a TV in her room when she is a teen- around 12 or 13. But I will make sure I have parental controls in place.

Re: TV In Child's Room

Patrick has one in his room. You can set the cable for children programming only.

I had a TV in my room when I was about the same age. MY mom felt that for me I was old enough. I think it depends on each child. My mom and dad had no problems with me having a TV at that age but maybe for others is different.

ETA: I still spent plenty of time with my family by having the TV.. we would play board games or even watch TV in the den together.

My mom said the exact same thing. We had a TV in the den and that is where we watched. If I had one in my bedroom I would have watched all night long and never slept.

My 6 year old has a TV in her room and I've set rules as to when that TV will be on. A night like tonight and Saturday you can stay up late watching TV but on weekdays most of the time it's off since she's watching TV w/ us in the LR. Set a timer if possible!

Re: TV In Child's Room

I say no-I think TV's should be in family rooms maybe one for parents and one for kids. TV's in their rooms just make them bored all the time. They never learn how to self entertain. I swear I think I got my 1st TV in my room at 16! I read all the time before that. Good way tto get your kids to read in their rooms too.
