A WWYD for working moms!
Hypothetical question for working moms...
You have one kid that is an older infant and you may or may not have another one, but if you did have another one, it would hopefully be in the near-ish future. You're not getting any younger.
JOB A
You've been there for over a decade, love your boss, have established a schedule that allows you to be home by 5pm most days and you also work from home one day a week. You feel you have a decent work/life balance. You really enjoy the subject matter you deal with at work—it's fun. You get five weeks vacation and you make approximately 100K. You do however feel overlooked when it comes to certain opportunities, but making an argument for said opportunities would lead to a lot more travel, so you're not really that aggressive with seeking those opportunities because it would require more time away from home. You know your boss thinks the world of you, but you feel you should have been promoted yesterday. Boss is pushing for your promotion, but because of goings on in the company, it's unclear when or if the promotion will come.
JOB B
This will be a brand new job at a brand new company. You will have a higher title and a higher salary by about 40K. You think you will thoroughly enjoy the subject matter you'd be working in and you're very excited about it. You would be gaining a whole new skill set that is very relevant and in demand in today's workforce. (There is potential for you to gain this skill set at your current job, but this job would have you much more immersed in it.) You will only get two weeks vacation. You would be getting home at 7pm every night and no longer working from home one day a week (at least in the beginning). That means five days a week you're walking in the door a half hour before bed time.
Which would you choose?

Thanks everyone for all the feedback.
Just writing out my thoughts in my original post helped me to have clarity. After I wrote it and read it back, I was like, "Duh! What's your issue?" It's easy to get caught up in the idea that more $$$ equals more success. But I feel like being able to balance work and motherhood happily is my true meaning of success right now. And I do realize how lucky I am to have a job that's allowing me to have this balance and still make a nice salary.
I did get really excited when thinking about this job and a small part of me wishes I was in a position to go for it. Before having a daughter it would have been a dream opportunity, but what I really want now is time with my kid. She leaned into me for a kiss for the first time last night—that was worth 40K right there!
So for right now, I'm staying put.

Those are tough choices bc it almost feels lke you have to sacrifice your family life to get ahead at work (isn't that always the case  )
Honestly I would try to negotiate job B and say hey... I'd love to come work for you, but this is what Im being offered in vaca and a day to work from home and see what they come back with. I would also share with job A what your offer is and see what they come back with-that ONLY if you're 100% sure you're going to go with Job b though.

Situation A reminds me of where I am currently....I haven't looked elsewhere because i don't want to lose the work-life balance.
If you want to make the move, see if you could negotiate time off...

This. A 40k raise if you currently make 100k wouldn't be worth loosing all that vacation time, plus working from home once a week, and being home by 5pm each night.
My husband left his job where he was home by 5-5:30 each night for a 35-40k raise and there are many days/weeks I feel it wasn't worth it.

A. For me, the work life balance is everything. The few nights I have to work past 6:30, I get super sad that I missed out on that time with DS. I dont think I'd have it in me to do that everday.

For me, it would job A. The security, hours and vacation time would be too Important for me to give up with a baby, plus another in the Near future. Sounds like they live you where you are and understand where you are right now. plus it sounds like there is room to grow in job a when you want to avail yourself of it.

I'm fortunate to be in a similar job situation as you currently are. There are times I think I can make more money elsewhere and learn more but in the end being there for dd (and hopefully another hold or two) is more important for me esp since Dh works longer hours. So I would personally stick with a

At this point in your life, I would choose A. You don't get these days with the little ones back. Looking back, they probably won't remember it too much, but you will. And you will probably regret having missed so much of their childhood for work. Just my opinion...

A) for the job security and rapport with the boss. You never know if you get a new boss who doesnt care if yr baby is sick, etc... Plus, life/ work balance is so hard to achieve!

I was in a very similar situation when I went back after DS was born, but was offered a more time demanding internal position with similar salaries to those posted. I chose A and have no regret. While the extra money would have been nice, time with DS really is priceless.

What is your DH's work situation? Could he pick up the slack at home if you choose Job B?
My situation is similar to Job A. I have been itching for something more challenging. DH and I have discussed it and the only way it would work for our family is if DH puts his career "on hold" to be more available for the girls. We feel strongly that one parent has to have flexibility.

I would definitely say job a. It's hard to come by jobs with good hours and that amount of vacation and flexibility. I would absolutely take a $40k pay cut for that. That being said, I would also have a candid conversation with your boss about the opportunity you are being offered and without giving ultimatums ask if you can be given some more opportunity at your current job while making it clear that you are grateful for the flexibility and your current job.
