I had it happen when we lived in our old house for 6 months. We did have a house alarm and it went off so by the time the cops got their they were gone. They were kids most likely and weren't able to take anything.
It did take me a while to feel safe going home since I came home from work first. After a period of time though you do forget and I knew I couldn't stop my life for what happened. I never felt comfortable though being home alone at night and I hated when DH had to work late. Even now, we moved and I still cringe when he tells me he will be home.
 It is a horrible feel to have to go through and I am sorry it happened to you.

No advice, but I feel so bad.... I am in the next town and cannot believe it happened in Merrick. I am so sorry you are going thru this.

No, but I am so sorry this happened to you. I hope the insurance company doesn't give you too hard a time. They are very thorough but that is because of so many people who have tried to scam them. Good Luck with everythhing.

the house I grew up in was robbed by local "kids" when I was 16. Alot of people knew my stepfather owned a business & probably had cash so we were targeted. I remember feeling SOOOO violated & angry. My mother had a floor safe where she kept all of her good jewelry, money, papers. I was wearing all of my best jewelry, but they trashed my room, dumped my jewlry box, stole a radio & all of our TVs & vcrs.
They also drank a bunch of alcohol right from the bottle & left it open on the floor.
I remember it being a PITA for my Mom to recall everything that was taken, list it all & try to find receipts.
We had three big dogs but they were in their crates.
My Mom & I had just run quickly to the stationary store because it was Valentine's day at around 4:00, we were only gone about 30 minutes.
My DH is really paranoid about theft, we have a central station alarm & DH has motion sensor cameras installed around our property.
I'm so sorry this happened to you, I hope they catch the a$$holes that did this to you.

Thank you all so much! I couldn't really sleep last night and I am hoping that the discomfort and fear does eventually fade. The neighbors are pretty shaken up. The said it hasn't happened in the 20+ years they've been living here. I just hate the fact that someone was in MY house looking through all my things.
I also don't think this is the beginning of any more robberies to come. I was definitely being scoped out for some time. They knew my schedule. Who knows?

Why do you think they knew your schedule? That is scary Glad that you are ok physically though and that they didn't hurt you.

My house growing up was robbed six times - the last time, I was home alone when two men in masks broke into the house and chased me as I ran outside 
I literally didn't sleep for a year. My parents enrolled me in karate classes, which did help to a degree, and they invested in a good alarm system.
I don't know aobut the insurance stuff because I didn't deal with it but for your ease of mind, it may help to invest in a very good alarm system with stickers on the windows and doors which indicate that an alarm system is installed, as a deterrent measure

When I was a kid, my next door neighbor was robbed. We lived in Commack. No community is safe. My in-laws were robbed years ago in Levittown.
We have a central alarm system, it gives me peace of mind.

I am so sorry this happened to you. I know the feeling, we were robbed when I was 13 years old living in Bayside. I was young so I really cant give you any advice -I dont know exactly what my mom did. But I will that you have peace of mind and can relax and sleep again, I know how hard it is.
