I'm so sorry. I live in Merrick and I get upset when my parents take security for granted (leave the doors unlocked, etc.).

Re: Our house was robbed today in Merrick
Was it during the day? Invest in an alarm. When we first moved in they were having all these home invasions and I couldn't sleep once we got our alarm it was so much better. I know theres always a way but it made me feel safer

Re: Our house was robbed today in Merrick
I grew up in Merrick, my parents still live there (same house for 25 years). While they've never been robbed, the next door neighbor was and they have had some petty theft (someone stole a bike when the garage door was open, and a power washer that my mom left in the driveway). It can happen anywhere. Im sorry it happened to you.

OMG, I'm so sorry this happened to you!!!!!
Thank God no one was home so it was only things that were taken. Things can be replaced, focus on the fact that you and DH weren't in harms way.
Hope they find whoever did this!!!

My house growing up was robbed six times -
Six times! wow.
Mseid:
My old apartment was broken into right before I got married. Only a metro card was taken( I thin they were looking for cash) but I was so scared.
I called the police before I went in, so I didn't see the bedroom untill they were there with me & that was the worst room, so just seeing all my stuff everywhere made me cry.
I stayed with DH's parents' house that night & took of fthe next day to get new lock. We washed EVERYTHING.
The police took a few things for fingerprints & I was never able to get them back, whch mad me mad, because the actual criminals didn't even take anything. I am pretty sure the roofers did it, but I didn't have any proof.
It does get better, but I moved (for other reasons), so it's a little easier.

My DH is really paranoid about theft, we have a central station alarm & DH has motion sensor cameras installed around our property.
Your DH sounds like mine...!

Re: Our house was robbed today in Merrick
First, let me say that I am so sorry.
My Brooklyn apartment was burglerized a few years ago on Thanksgiving weekend. As it turns out, the crime was committed by some local guys who broke into about 10 apartments in my neighborhood in between Thanksgiving and Christmas. There were two female detectives devoted to the case, Surprisingly, , they eventually caught them (yay - go NYPD!!!!) but we did not get any of our stuff back.
In the meantime, I spent many sleepless night feeling anxious and upset. I kept the t.v. on all the time. Thankfully, you have a home that you can install an alarm in! ADT wanted my landlord's permission to put an alarm in before they would do it! Ugh!
You seem to have many of the things you need to do covered so far but I noticed one thing and I do not want to freak you out, but,
(1) Can you tell if there are any extra sets of keys missing? Car keys or house keys? You may need to get locks changed in the house if there are some missing or if you suspect that there might be keys missing.
Also, for all those reading this. The cop that responded to my 911 call yelled at me because I, like most people, was shocked when i got home that night and discovered the burglary. Like an idiot, I walked around the apartment after I realized that I had been burglarized before I actually called 911. I went into each room to see what actually happened!
The cop's point: you never know who you are going to stumble upon. As soon as you discover the burglary, leave immediately and call the police from a safe place. They really want to go in and check the house out before you start walking around.
You will feel better. In the meantime, here are some

I am so sorry
I have never been robbed, but my parents' car was stolen from right in front of their old house years ago. I was young at the time & remember being terrified that whoever did is was going to come back & try to get into our house.
