WWYD re: possible exposure to Coxsackie? (in terms of sending my kids to back to school if they have not been exposed yet)

WWYD re: possible exposure to Coxsackie? At least one child at my twins' preschool came down with Coxsackie on Monday. My kids were not at school that day (it was a field trip day anyhow.) They only go MWF, so today (Wednesday) would be their first day back. I'm wondering if I should keep them home, especially because it's the last week and they were planning to just play in sprinklers, etc. Then, Friday is just a quick graduation ceremony. The school did not indicate that they were going to do a thorough disinfection or anything and has not responded as to how many cases of coxsackie there are or the timing of when kids might've been exposed.

I do not want to risk 4 yr old twins plus a 2 yr old possibly catching coxsackie. But I don't want them to miss their whole last week of preschool either if I'm being overly cautious. What do you think? Or what questions would you ask the school?

My concern is that some kids who were exposed but don't have symptoms yet could be there today and spread it to my kids while it's in the incubation period.

TIA!

Re: WWYD re: possible exposure to Coxsackie? (in terms of sending my kids to back to school if they have not been exposed yet)

In my experience coxsackie was ALWAYS going around so if I were to keep her home every time someone had it, she would have never been in daycare.

Even though they may not state it, most school's have policies to disinfect daily, especially when there is an outbreak of something . I would imagine it's the law too. But having said that, all the disinfecting in the world can't really stop it from spreading because kids put stuff in their mouths, don't wash their hands, share toys etc

For the record, DD never got coxsackie even once and her daycare had outbreaks all the time. (she had something once that resembled it but was sooo mild so I don't know if that was it or not)

I wouldn't worry too much but if you are really concerned and it's only 2 days I'd just keep them home. Maybe bring them for the graduation though? I can't imagine they would be interacting too much with possible sick kids for just the ceremony

The incubation period is 3-5 days so if the infected child showed symptoms on Monday your twins were likely already exposed on Friday.

This. Infection period is actually before symptoms appear, so if a child/children have already been diagnosed and showed symptoms the incubation period is most likely over.

Agreed. I get an e-mail almost weekly that there's coxsackie going around in one of the classrooms (it's a VERY large daycare/preschool). I could never keep her home every time they sent it out, but being so close to the end of the year- if you can avoid it, why not? DD did get it. She had a rash on her feet, hands, and diaper area and very high fever for a day or so. Otherwise, she was fine. The first day she was a little cranky, very snuggly, and sleepy- that was the day with the highest fevers. It broke in the night and then she averaged about 101. The rash didn't bother her or slow her down in any way. DH and I got it, too, but mildly. Mostly we just both had high fevers for a day and were tired and felt crappy. No rash for us.

I agree with above posters. Coxsackie is constantly going around.

DS 1 has been in daycare since he was 11 weeks old and is now 7.5. He has gotten Coxsackie once. And I believe it was from a swimming pool, not daycare. DS 2 has never had it (he is 5 and also has been in daycare since 11 weeks).

Thank you! I'm not concerned about the original child. I'm concerned that she spread it to kids on Monday who would be in the incubation period today.

So if my twins were exposed on Friday, they didn't get it. But if they're exposed again today, who knows if they would get it this time.

They were never on daycare so I'm not used to this exposure! Lol. I have several "crises" going on currently so I really don't want to add sick kids to the list. Thank you for all of the feedback!

Send them. If I kept my DS home because of possible exposure to something he would never go.

You will never be able to shield them from illness.

According to the CDC it's contagious for a long time.

Generally, a person with hand, foot, and mouth disease is most contagious during the first week of illness. People can sometimes be contagious for days or weeks after symptoms go away.

That's probably why it's ALWAYS going around. DS has had it a few times (apparently it's possible to get it more than once, which is the opposite of what one Dr told us ). Most recently, he caught it from his cousins a week and a half after they were diagnosed. If there is any hint of rash or peeling skin left, it's still contagious. I absolutely love how one of the Drs at his Peds office insisted he could go back to school after 2 days even though the rash was still present Chat Icon I swear, some of these Dr's we've seen are really just not knowledgeable at all. Either that or they don't care if other kids get sick.

It's the end of the year so I'd prob keep DS home if someone in his class had it. It ruined just about the entire last summer for us.

Sounds like you made your decision...
Personally, I'd keep the kids home.
I did for a week after coxsackie broke out in our public pool. I was not sorry. You can't avoid everything... but I'd not expose my kid knowingly unless I had to.

Even after the rash is gone it can be contagious! Our ped. told us to keep her home for a minimum or 7 days after her rash appeared. I kept her home for 10. They said they can still be contagious after that, but the chances of it spreading go down dramatically.

ETA: Her rash was gone in about 5 days.

Yeah! It's amazing to me that kids are sent back to school even with the rash (because they are still very contagious at that point). I read a study (when DS was sick with it for the 2nd time) that said some strains of the virus can still be shed for up to 3 months in feces. So diaper leaks and kids not washing their hands properly after using the bathroom can still spread it for up to 3 months (even though they've been symptom free for months!). Getting hit with it over and over again last summer (I got it too even though adults don't normally catch it) has made me very mad about how Dr's handle it and spread misinformation. Telling a parent their kid can go back to school with the rash is just irresponsible.
