WWYD regarding strep exposure
My daughter (almost 5) was exposed to strep today at school and it was a close friend.
I am 9 months pregnant due anytime now and is FREAKING she's going to catch it.
Do you think the pediatrician would prescribe antibiotics prophaltically under the circumstances??
I'm so upset. With a newborn coming this is the last thing we need!!
What would you do?

I would call your pediatrician. It doesn't hurt to ask!

Re: WWYD regarding strep exposure
Has your daughter had strep before?
My kids and I were exposed to strep a few weeks ago and none of us got it. we've never had strep in the past either.
I would call the ped and see what they say.

Re: WWYD regarding strep exposure
We've been exposed to strep weekly. Seems like every kid in DS class has had it. Just keep your eyes on your kid... If she looks sick, go to Dr & get her tested. No way would I take prophylactic antibiotics (or give them to the kid).

you can call but I am pretty sure it is very rare for newborns to be able get strep so I wouldn't stress it.

Re: WWYD regarding strep exposure
Eh, I would be worried too, but I was continually told that younger kids and babies rarely get strep. The good news is that we get those letters weekly and in fact I have several times had one child home with strep and the other has not gotten it. I would not give meds for no reason. I would wash hands frequently, and the first sign of any illness take her in for a rapid and culture if the rapid is negative. It it makes you feel better, call your ped or ob and discuss it with them.
I understand your concern my daughter had croup when I had my younger one. She had to stay at my mother's for a few days.

Currently she has a bad cold (prior to the exposure). It's clearly a cold. No fever runny nose back drip which will make me more confused as how she is feeling.

Re: WWYD regarding strep exposure
It can't hurt to ask but I know my ped would NOT give antibiotics unless my kids were actually sick and meds were warranted. They don't give antibiotics "just in case".
Hope everyone stays healthy!!

WWYD regarding strep exposure
I had strep when my parent brought my sister home from the hospital. My mom got me on antibiotics, had me wash my hands like crazy, and wear a mask around the baby. Everything was fine and my sister didn't catch it. Don't worry, everything will be ok. Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Same here. DS 1 had it a month ago and DS 2 never got it (and sometimes he drinks DS 1's drinks...)

This is true.
I had strep when my ds was a few months. He didn't catch it and neither did anyone else.

I had strep in December, I was really sick. DD was with me the days leading up to me getting it, we shared drinks, kisses etc. even when I was sick, i still was kind of around her, and she never came down with it.

Re: WWYD regarding strep exposure
do not stress, just watch her. firs sign, take her.
your newborn will have your antibodies. Also, I have never heard of a newborn contracting strep? I was told by my ped it just doesn't happen.
My FIL was diagnosed with the flu in 2013 2 days after DD was born. Guess who was holding her for HOURS the day she was born? She was fine thanks to mamas antibodies!

For us the first sign was fever - DS wasn't complaining about his throat at all.

Re: WWYD regarding strep exposure
Strep can linger in your system, and she might not get it for a month or two after being exposed. I would up the vitamin C and D, and just keep an eye on her.
My DD had strep last month. Had no idea actually. Her throat didn't hurt at all, no fever. I actually took her in for a cough, and they did a test, and voila, strep.
