Re: Getting Paid Only For Daycare?

Like pp have said, it's such a personal decision for you, your family and your finances.

I never had a career that I "loved" before getting pregnant. I made OK money but nothing great. DH, on the other hand, has a career that is very passionate about but also requires long hours to accommodate clients. If I were to continue to work, I would be picking up kids from day care, returning to an empty house and doing dinner/baths/homework/bedtime alone.

If I worked a M-F job, I would rarely see DH because he is off two weekdays and works weekends. Our "family time" with our kids would be non-existent.

Being a SAHM is certainly not for everyone but it is a very rewarding experience and I have never regret one moment of it

Re: Getting Paid Only For Daycare?

I am a NYC teacher. It's my second career, so my salary is low - mid range.

From the time my son was 22 months up until he started kindergarten (2 weeks ago) I was in a lousy situation - terrible commute, awful boss, etc. Because it was so bad, I made sure I stayed on a local district's sub list.

I once calculated that if I quit and subbed on Long Island and therefore subtracted the cost of daycare and gas I would only come out a few hundred dollars behind every month.

Your post reminds me of how, after things got really bad, almost every single day in the car on the way to work I would do the math in my head, over and over again, to try to make the numbers change. They never did.Chat Icon

Anyway, maybe it's easier for me to say this now that I am in a much better school with an easier commute and a boss I truly respect, but in hindsight I am glad I stuck it out. I was able to continue contributing to retirement, to save a little bit of money, and we took a couple of nice vacations. Now I can look forward to newfound savings since daycare/preschool payments are over.

Anyway, good luck with your decision!Chat Icon

Re: Getting Paid Only For Daycare?

It is nuts. In my line of work, I cant really miss more than a year and not be considered "dated" so I continue to work bc first, I LOVE what I do and 2 bc Id have to start all over if I didnt. We spaced our kids out so that we never had 2 in daycare at the same time bc while I would still have income left after paying for 2, it would still be a financial challenge to do so, and we would REALLY have to cutback to swing 2 in daycare. I wish they were closer in age, but in the end, I have 2 beautiful children, I didnt have to take the hit of 2 in daycare at once, and 3 my career didnt have to be sidetracked.

Re: Getting Paid Only For Daycare?

If I had to put my 2 kids in daycare full time, it would be most of my salary. Factor in commuting costs of going to & from the city every day, plus other expenses involved with working, and I'd likely take home nothing or next to nothing. I would have to do it though, because my job is the type where once you leave, you can't come back easily at all. I would need to continue to work to hold my spot, because down the road when the kids are older & in school, I would definitely want my job. I wouldn't want to give up my job forever, I have a govt job that is very secure, good benefits (which I don't currently use, but could if we had to), pension, opportunities for promotions to increase my salary etc.. plus it's a pretty low-stress job... I'd be crazy to leave for good, almost no one ever does. When I'm tempted to quit my job, I think about this, as much as I'd love to be home with my kids. Though at the same time I actually make a terrible SAHM so it's probably for the best that I work. Also I know I'm super lucky that my mom is willing to watch the kids for us so I have to take advantage of the opportunity while I have it.

I quit my job a year and a half ago to be a SAHM for this exact reason. I had three kids in daycare and I was working to pay for daycare and have health insurance for myself. My kids were covered under DH but as soon as he added me to the plan his premium sky rocketed. We were using an in home daycare and we knew one of the women who ran it. And her daughter was a friend of mine who also worked there. So we had a really good rate. After about a year of having my third child In the daycare with my twins, they are 21 months apart, I was literally coming home with nothing. It was tiring, stressful and to me it wasn't worth the tremendous amount of stress I was under at my job. People were losing their jobs left and right, the company was going to sh!t and we all wondered if our department was next. So DH and I sat down, figured out our finances and gave myself a date that I would quit. I worked for another 6 months (part of me wanted to ride it out and see if my department was getting let go so I could get the severance) then I quit. In the beginning it was great And I would not change my decision for anything, but I can't say that it was the best decision I ever made. Being a SAHM of three little ones is HARD. For me personally it's harder than being a FTWM. Physically and mentally it's exhausting. There are days when it takes such a toll on me that doing regular household chores is physically hard. I don't get to have that adult interaction everyday, I don't get to get up and do my hair and make up every day. Some days I am lucky if I get a shower before the kids get up. Financially we are actually doing better than when I was working. If I did continue to work at the time I would have had to quit anyway because our daycare wound up closing its doors so the women could retire. No way in he!! Could I afford a regular daycare center. The twins started preschool last year, 3 days a week/2.5 hrs a day. This year they will do 5 days 2.5 hrs a day of pre k and my youngest will go to preschool. I'll have 2.5 hours a day 4 days a week to myself to get things done around here. Next year my twins will be in K and my youngest pre k. When my youngest starts K I will look for something part time just to bring in some extra cash and have that adult contact again. I could have my old job back if I wanted. I occasionally talk to my old boss and she always tells me whenever I am ready to come back. But we will be moving before then and the travel won't be worth it. I don't have a college degree so there really isn't any field that I am in so finding another full time 9-5 job will be hard. It's really a personal decision. If I could do it all over again, I'd probably continue to work if I knew then what I know now. Sure the days I've gotten to spend with my kids I would not change for anything, but i've also been in some dark spots since becoming a SAHM. Before making any decisions ask yourself if it's really what you want. If you'll be happy. If you're cut out to be a SAHM. Think about all the pros and cons and just take some time for yourself to really think about it.

This was me exactly except the decision was made for me. I was let go from my job of nearly 14 yrs one week after I returned from maternity leave with my second baby. I've been home 6 months. I always thought it would be nice to be able to stay home but for me it's harder than going to work. I worked in retail, and to be honest there was no way I would find something else making what I made. I was the breadwinner so it really affected us financially. DH is working 2 jobs and I made the decision to go back to school for cosmetology so I'm not technically Sahm anymore I suppose. But I have to agree it can get lonely and boring staying home all the time with no adults to talk to. I really need that. I also think it's different based on financial situations. If my husband made enough $$ that I could stay home and still afford to put my kids in nursery school, I'd have more of a routine and more "me" time to do things like join a gym maybe I wouldn't feel so stressed Chat Icon
