Re: Afterschool activitie schedule for 1st grader - is this too much?
I agree - too much for a little kid. And too much for you!!! DS#1 is going to be 6 and going into 1st grade and we are finally starting him in soccer in Sept. And with one game a week on Sunday and TBD practice - I am worried how we'll deal with it. I don't know how people do it between work and multiple activities/kids!!

Is your son very athletic? Does your ex want/plan for him to be a star athlete?
I think that is intense for a 6yo but I know people who pick one thing and really focus on that sport, instrument or activity.
I would take out swimming. Keep football if your son enjoys and is good at it.
My son is also 6 years old. At this point, we are still exposing him to different activities to see what he enjoys and excels at. DH's sports are tennis and golf. DS has been taking tennis lessons for a year. It is only once a week and DH plays with him about once a week. He played soccer in the spring and we did not do tennis at that time. During the summer, he learned to swim.
We plan to do tennis and golf camp next summer.
It's hard to know if he's athletic or not. He wants to play sports but gets bored with them very quickly. And unfortunately, ExH isn't just focusing on getting him good at one sport. He also has him enrolled in baseball which is another 4 - 5 day commitment (starting in the spring). If he was good at football and wanted to make that "his thing" then fine. But he's kind of just enrolling him in everything right now.

Re: Afterschool activitie schedule for 1st grader - is this too much?
I'm out of breath reading that.
That is ridiculous.
School is the number one priority -- he needs to have more than adequate time for whatever work he needs to do, reading, learning, developing, etc. after school/homework.
THEN, when he has free time and energy, can he focus on sports and extra-curricular activities.
And this is coming from an avid athlete who played multiple sports from age five on up through college.

I've never even heard of a sport for a 6 year old with hour and a half practices 4x a week. Honestly I think it sounds crazy.
Agreed--what town has football practice for 6 year olds 4 times a week (I'm actually really wondering)? Maybe I'm not up on the kids sports these days but that sounds very excessive for that age.
We live in Rockland County and it's the Town of Orangetown. ExH and I had a major blow out about it last night because he thinks its normal and all sports are like this. I agree with you ladies - I've literally never heard of this before. Not only is it 4 days a week but it's an hour and a half practice each day. It's just overkill at 6 years old.
I was going to ask the same thing, my son plays football, is 8 and practice is 2xs per week during the summer and 1X during the school year with ONE game on the weekend. They always say school comes first. Even baseball season, he has practice once a week and then games 2 times per week but thats it. Is football a certified PAL league?

Re: Afterschool activitie schedule for 1st grader - is this too much?
DS is 6.5 and going into second grade. He plays soccer in the fall, which is practice once per week plus a game on Saturday. He also recently started piano lessons once per week, but it's only a 30 minute lesson. In the spring, he plays soccer and baseball. They each have 1 weeknight practice or game and 1 game on Saturday. It gets hectic, but he really loves playing both sports. His homework is done at aftercare and he eats right after his practice or game. He has always gone to bed on the later side so the sports haven't had an impact on sleep. He really wants to do hockey this winter, but that's only on the weekend.
He has played 2 sports in the spring for the past 2 years. It's hard balancing everything, but he's happy and we make it work. I think 2 nights per week is plenty. I can't imagine doing 4 nights per week with 1.5 hour practices. I think it's too much and if yoir DS doesn't show a lot of interest in playing, I wouldn't push it.

Can I ask does your ExH help you take him/pick him up from any of these practices? Is all of the responsibility for these activities falling on you?

I think practice Monday - Thursday until 8:15pm is absolutely ridiculous, and I'm quite surprised the football league even does that for 6 year olds.

We share physical custody of DS, so on my weeks its my responsibility to get him there and back, and on his weeks its his responsibility. ExH is also one of the coaches though, so he *tries* to help out on my weeks and drive DS home from practice here and there. Don't get me wrong, it's a big help when he does drive him home for me, but it's STILL 4 nights a week and I'm still driving him at least 1 way each day (it's a 25 minute drive each way for me because he plays in ExH's town). If it were 1 day a week I wouldn't be complaining, but 4 is excessive.
DS came home from practice last night with red circles under his eyes from being so tired. This isn't easy practice - they have them doing drills and running up and down hills etc. He was so wiped out that he wet the bed last night. He has NEVER done that before. EVER. The poor kid is so tired. And we have practice again tonight. I just feel like it's too much for him.

I am sure there is room to improve but we have already witnessed some star athletes at this age.
DS used to have this kid in his preschool who was amazing at sports. I was shocked at how well this kid could catch and throw a football. He was a natural at any sport.
DS also had a friend in preschool whose parents were pushing ice hockey. When I met the mom at an open house for 2.5 year olds, she told me her son played ice hockey. I thought she was joking but he has been skating since 2 and playing in leagues since preschool. He is now 6 and has been playing ice hockey for 4 years. The dad is like 6'6" and plays ice hockey for a league but never played pro.
DH is pretty serious about tennis and we would love it if our DS could play tennis in high school and college. We have many friends also very interested in tennis where children have started lessons at 3-4. Our friend was telling me how they have a friend who is so serious about tennis. They had a tennis play date and the parents said they don't want kids to play if they are not going to be serious. The girls were 5 years old!!!
I see nothing wrong with your DH is pushing for a sport but I think it is too much if he is pushing for so many sports at the same time.

As a teacher/coach I feel the worst thing you can do is have a child commit to one sport at too young of an age. They will burn out or get injured. To me the variety of sports is not the problem in the case of the OP but the amount of time dedicated to each one for a child that age. That football practice schedule is more appropriate for middle school students, not 6 year olds. Is there are chance that the practices are more frequent in the beginning of the season and tapper off a little bit as things are underway?

In September it will become practice 3 times per week with 1 game on the weekends. Right now it's practice 4 times per week, no games. So, essentially, it will be the same number of days per week for the whole season.

I don't disagree with you. That is what we are doing with our son. We will continue with tennis but he enjoys it and we don't push too hard. He asked to play basketball and I plan on signing him up this winter.
We just know people who are really already pushing hard at age 6. We are not.
