Afterschool activitie schedule for 1st grader - is this too much?

ExH and I are disagreeing on DS' after school sports schedule. He thinks its fine, I think its way too much for a 6 year old.

Right now DS goes to full day camp until 5:30. Then Monday - Thursday he comes home, eats dinner and changes into football clothes, and back out the door to practice from 6:30 - 8:15. Then home to shower and into bed around 9:00PM.

Starting in September when school starts it will be essentially the same schedule plus one football game on the weekend. Plus homework and school projects.

When football ends ExH wants him to take swim lessons 3 times a week in the winter + hockey camp. Then when that is over softball starts and that is 2 - 3 games per week plus 1 - 2 practices, so a total of 4 to 5 days of softball.

I feel like this is ridiculous. He's 6 years old and going to bed after 9:00. He has no time to wind down after football and he's exhausted. Not to mention, I work full time, so it leaves me with absolutely no time for anything. I'm running around like a crazy lady to pick DS up from school/camp, then home to make dinner, then back out to practice, then back home to shower him and bed, and finally at 9:30 I'm JUST getting a chance to make lunches for the next day and do laundry and clean up. My day isn't ending until almost 11:00PM.

Is it just me or is this an insane schedule for a 6 year old??

That is a bit much in my opinion. He will need time for nightly reading as I assume he is doing the homework in the afterschool program.

Wow!
I can't even handle 1 sport for my DS (he's 5).
Most my friends with older kids do 1 sport (3 times a week)... Unless the kid shows extreme promise (like a professional runner/dancer, but usually that shows up at a later age). Those kids go daily (but are in really elite training programs).

Yes, we're going to try to have him complete his homework in the after school program. But even that I don't love - I'd prefer to be the one to sit with him while he does his homework so that I can see where and if he's struggling with anything in particular.

That sounds like a lot to me. There doesn't seem like enough down time especially during the school year with hw.

I think that's A LOT for such a young kid, especially once school starts. The school days are long as it is and then at night they have HW........that's enough on its on. To add that many extra curricular activities is too much. . Kids need downtime and a good nights rest, why overextend him? I wouldn't let your ex sign him up for so much all at once.

That is a lot.

We have DS in 1 sport per season right now and it's maximum one weekend day and one week day.

We may add in karate since there is some flexibility in that schedule and I think it may benefit him to get out some energy, especially in the colder months.

For swimming - if you feel that it would benefit your DS - there are programs that are 1-2x a week that are highly recommended.

For hockey - that's a huge commitment long term. We have friends who have kids in hockey and it takes up a lot of time, year round.

I was going to say this!!

Have you asked him? I have nephews in my life that have actually said to me that they love playing sports, but sometimes wished they had "down time" to just be kids and not have to run around. I thought that was just an adult wish, but apparently kiddos feel it too. I would try to get a feel for what he's feeling about it all.

Yes me too!
I got exhausted just reading that.
I think that is way too much- kids at that age need time to be kids too and not on such a rigid schedule every day.

And that's not to mention YOU. You are the one running yourself ragged with that schedule too.
No WAY would that fly with me. I need my down time

Afterschool activitie schedule for 1st grader - is this too much?

Im sorry that's insane.
I am struggling with what activities my 1st grader will do for the new school year. She's doing soccer on the weekend as well as dance one night during week. She has religion one day a week after school and she doesn't get home from school as it is until 4. She wants to do gymnastics again but not sure if we are adding that in. It's too much they are 6

I am too!

We decided long ago one activity and we will be not be running every single day until DS is older but at that age it is way too much. They need some down time.

no, that is way to much for a 6 year old. And my 1st grader will be doing soccer dance and religion soon. Even all those things arent as much time as what your things are for 1! I think its ok to have them in more than one activity but why does he have to swim 3x a week? that seems over the top. If DH wants him to swim than 1x a week is more than enough.
I know nothing about hockey or softball - but that sounds like an awful lot for 1st graders? Our soccer is practice one night an one game on saturday. Why does softball have to have 2-3 games plus 2 practices?? Is that normal for this age group? I dont think I would put my 6 year old in anything that demanding lol

I've never even heard of a sport for a 6 year old with hour and a half practices 4x a week. Honestly I think it sounds crazy.

Agreed--what town has football practice for 6 year olds 4 times a week (I'm actually really wondering)? Maybe I'm not up on the kids sports these days but that sounds very excessive for that age.

We live in Rockland County and it's the Town of Orangetown. ExH and I had a major blow out about it last night because he thinks its normal and all sports are like this. I agree with you ladies - I've literally never heard of this before. Not only is it 4 days a week but it's an hour and a half practice each day. It's just overkill at 6 years old.

Not all sports are like that - especially at 6! Some of the travel soccer programs, and hockey programs have major time commitments but, most "recreational league" sports are 1-2 days a week still at that age (same town).

Does he seem to enjoy it at least?

ETA - DS did 30 minute swimming classes 5x a week for a month and that was a lot - and we missed a bunch (it was cheap so we signed up knowing if we missed a night, we missed it). He enjoyed it though but, it made things a bit crazy for me.

I agree that it is too much but I did grow up in Rockland County - north Rockland - and unfortunately football is king there. I didn't realize even 6 year old played! My mom never let my brother play.

Re: Afterschool activitie schedule for 1st grader - is this too much?

Is your son very athletic? Does your ex want/plan for him to be a star athlete?

I think that is intense for a 6yo but I know people who pick one thing and really focus on that sport, instrument or activity.

I would take out swimming. Keep football if your son enjoys and is good at it.

My son is also 6 years old. At this point, we are still exposing him to different activities to see what he enjoys and excels at. DH's sports are tennis and golf. DS has been taking tennis lessons for a year. It is only once a week and DH plays with him about once a week. He played soccer in the spring and we did not do tennis at that time. During the summer, he learned to swim.

We plan to do tennis and golf camp next summer.
