Lazy eye/going cross-eyed

One of my sons seems to have a lazy eye, I guess? He goes cross eye every now and then. I never really thought too much about it until the last 2 weeks when 2 different people mentioned it to me. So I guess it's getting worse. He's 3. I made an appt with a pediatric opthamologist. The earliest I could get was the end of March. They said expect to be there for 1 1/2-2 hours for the initial appointment.

Anyone have experience with this? That seems like so long for an appointment. Any idea what dr will do? What is treatment for something like this?

My son has a lazy eye and we started patching the good eye for two hours a day. It seems to be helping!

The reason for such a long appointment is because it's done in stages. You go in, they take info/history from you, do a quick initial exam then put drops in for dialation. Then you have to wait about a half hour for the drops to take effect. Then when you go back in the dr will do a more thorough exam.

Typically for strabismus you will have to patch the strong eye for a few hours a day to strengthen the muscles in the weak one. Depending on the situation he may need glasses as well. If this is the case I strongly recommend looking at patchmekids.com for a "super cool" patch that goes over the galsses. My son had one and loved it! Never put up a fight about having to have it on.
