Lazy eye????

I've noticed that when DD turns her head her right eye goes in a lot more than the left...I told DH and he started noticing it on vacation and so did my MIL....would this be considered a lazy eye, and if so has anyone else experienced this???

Its called "exotropia" and my son just had surgery to correct it about 4 months ago. Its degenerative, and he was losing control over the muscle.

If you need more info, feel free to FM me. He was diagnosed at 4 months, and is now 5 years old. They do not like to do surgery until they are at least 3 years old because some children outgrow it. My son did not outgrow it, his got worse and worse.

At 2 mths old, the ped had DDs eye evaluated b/c she started doing that.

With a full exam, I was told her eyes were perfect. It was based on her age. But they COULD have seen if there was a lazy eye that was going to show. The eye dr dilated her pupils and everything. The eyes turning in stopped/rarely ever happened after 2 mths old.

Def mention it to your ped. My ped told us the sooner they catch that stuff the better...but it could be nothing in your DDs case.

Maybe she is trying to focus hard?

Ped hasn't seen it bc it only happens when she tries really hard to turn her head to look at something not when she's looking straight ahead..it's just with a head turn like she's straining to see something behind her etc...also she's usually hysterical at the ped so they don't really get to see it

This happened to DS. The ped wasn't concerned, but we got referred to Dr. Doyle (peds opthalmologist) in RVC. He was fantastic and it turns out DS had "pseudo-strabismus" (a false lazy eye) because of the skin folds around his eye. It eventually corrected itself as DS got older.

Definitely ask your ped and get checked out to be safe!

I'm going to second the Dr. Doyle rec. I thought I saw my DS' eyes acting weird when we got home from the hospital and we saw Dr. Doyle when Joshua was only 6 days old. He told us he was fine and to bring him in at 2 months to have his eyes dilated and checked again. I debated going back when he was so young but decided to just do it. He dilated his eyes and said everything was perfect. My mom and dad took my DS and Dr. Doyle personally called me at work after the apptmt to tell me everything he checked and that all was fine (technical terms and all).

thx ladies, I looked up estopria, and it seems like it's there even when they look straight on, and that isn't the case with DD it's only when she's turns her head and strains to see something behind her or to the side...I am going to mention it to the ped this monday at her year check up...

how old is DD? my DD had one eye that turned inward, but only occasionally. would notice it a few times over a feww days and then nothing for weeks. she was about 5-6 months at hte time.

well ped said to get her checked and it was a good tihng we did. she's far sighted, extremely far sighted. and one eye was stronger than the other. so because she was always straining to focus on things, it would cause the eye to turn inward sometimes. i was told if we didn't get in glasses then, the eye turn could become permanent, and that she could develop the lazy eye where she wouldn't be using the sight out of hte weaker eye, and we'd have to patch her to get the vision built back up. she's been wearing glasses since she was 7 months old, and is now 2. still very far sighted, it didn't change as much as the doc hoped since we had her in glasses so early, but she wears them all the time and you never see the eye turn at all.

If I were you I would just go to the eye doctor and get her a check up. When my DS was younger someone said something about his eye turning and I asked my doctor. He said he didn't see anything, but if I thought I did I should take him to the eye doctor. I think he was about one years old when we took him. The eye doctor said he was fine, but I am glad I went just to make sure.
