***UPDATE**When should you overreact
DH brought her to her dr. and she does NOT have an infection! My pharmacist was closed yesterday at the time the on call dr. called in the antibiotics and I'm so happy they were bc I would have given her medicine for no reason! The dr. couldn't believe she even prescribed an antibiotic cream! He made a face when DH told him it was the on call dr. that said this. The dr. said her finger is fine and healing the way it should be on its own!
DH and I work so my in-laws watch my 16 month DD at my house. Last week I noticed a small cut near my DD's cuticle with a couple of other small scratches. Wasn't terrible so I brushed it off and didn't even think to ask my in-laws what happened bc it didn't look like anything to get hysterical over. I did ask DH if he knew where it came from and he said no and that she hadn't hurt herself around him lately. During the rest of the week I could tell it was a little inflamed and had a little scab on it but again I didn't think anything of it. My mother in law told me on Friday night that last week DD closed her finger in the cabinet draw and got a little upset but that it wasn't anything big. The past two days its now swollen and red and doesn't look like it is healing the right way. DH even said today to call the doctor bc it looks a little infected. I call and speak with the on call Dr. and she made it seem like I left her alone in the car all day long! I told her what I knew and what the finger looks like and she asked me if I had put Neosporin on it when it happened. I explained that I didn't bc I work and didn't even know when exactly it happened. DD has been happy and hasn't shown any signs of discomfort. She had a tone and said "okkk" then she asked if DD had a fever and I said no, she says "Thank God".....I already start to feel like a bad mother..she then asked if I washed her hands with antibacterial soap, I said no just regular...again her tone seemed very disapproving and she continued to give me the rundown on what to do when your child gets a cut and how you should wash it with antibacterial soap, put Neosporin on it and then a bandaid. It wasn't just her words but her tone that made me feel horrible. She then says that she is calling in an antibiotic medicine, antibiotic cream and she wants me to bring her in tomorrow.
I am already an uptight mom sometimes...I make she is eating healthy, getting enough sleep etc...I never wanted to be the mom that runs to the hospital over a little cut so my question is am I the one that is wrong here or is this doctor going overboard. I should say that I do think it is a little infected but she made it seem like what the hell it could have turned into! I should also add that this isn't a dr that DD normally sees.
sorry for long vent but she pissed me off and I then called my mother in law and I probably pissed her off bc I was giving her a lecture on how we all need to make sure we wash her hands to prevent infections if she cuts herself....

Re: When should you overreact
My in laws watch my kids so I get where you are coming from. But I would not blame your MIL. These things happen and it's not like she was neglecting your daughter. I would be super pissed off at the Dr. though. what a tone to take! My ped is super understanding and usually I say I can't believe I didn't notice or whatever, and she's like look we do the best we can (she is a mom too) and is so reassuring. I am sorry your ped was so condescending to you. It's fine if she wanted to say, look in the future just put neosporin, etc. but she was out of line imo.

I think that dr. was very out of line and unprofessional. "Thank God" when you tell her there's no fever? What a jerk. I wouldn't worry too much about it kids do get hurt all the time. She should have been a little more tactful when talking to you on the phone, I don't like what she may have been implying

I'd be pissed at the doctor. Seems like she had a condescending tone. Moms are usually hard on themselves as it is, we don't need anyone else to make us feel like we're idiots. She could have shown concern in a different way. Try not to take it personally

When should you overreact
Around the time she said "Thank God" would've been the time I'd get pissed and would've said something.

That doctor was very condescending. Was she a doctor at the same practice you go to? I know our office rotates with local offices in the area as far as who's on call. If she's a doctor at the office you go to I would mention it to the one you normally see next time you're in there.

Re: When should you overreact
I really wonder if we have both called the same doctor, as I had a very similar experience with a female doctor being nasty and condescending to me. She is at the practice I go to but we don't normally see her. I had to make a call to the on call once and got her. She gave me really nasty attitude and basically made me feel like crap when I was already upset. It was a while ago but I really wish I had complained to the main doctor we usually see.
Don't feel bad, it's her, not you.

Re: When should you overreact
Thanks everyone! She is an on call dr. that we have never seen. Our main dr's are lovely! It was just how condescending she was and the worst part was that I felt bad so I apologized and then she gave me the old "oh don't worry you're doing a great job." ugh! DH is taking her to the dr. tomorrow and I'm not saying that I am going to start running to the dr. for every bump she gets but I def. will be more aware...oh the joys of motherhood lol....

Re: When should you overreact
Hopefully you were misinterpreting the tone of the doc. We get lots of bumps & bruises & don't have antibacterial soap. If something gets red, we put a bit of neosporin on it. As for a finger getting banged up in a drawer, that's nothing!

You know, some of these peds are real a--holes. Give me a break. Your damned if you do, damned if you don't. If you had called when she first had the cuts they would have thought you were nuts. I had a similar experience with an "on call" when DS was a baby so I can empathize.
I would have done the same thing you did. Accidents happen, kids get hurt and usually the boo boos heal. Don't beat yourself up. She was probably pissed she was on call over the weekend and was being a jerk. Complain to your regular doctor when you go.

When should you overreact
That nurse or whomever who was talking to you is an a$$! Either has no kids of their own or didn't raise them herself. Kids get cuts and bruises all the time and mostly you won't know how it happened. Younger they are the less THEY even notice.
I'd be furious with that twit.

I'd be pissed at the doctor. That's ridiculous. If your child wasn't upset or anything why on earth would you even think twice?!?!?! This woman is CLEARLY not a mother herself, otherwise she would NOT have been so judgmental and would have totally understood how things sometimes get missed.

Re: When should you overreact
That dr is a jerk! I my kids get cuts and scrapes all the time. I clean as best I can but they won't allow band aids. Whatever. I'm sure your Dd is fine. Did they have you take her in. Did they send an medivac helicopter to your house? ;)

***UPDATE**When should you overreact
at your update: wow. If that doctor is in the practice I'd be sure to put a note that your child is NEVER seen by them EVER. I had such a note for a doctor who said I was committing child abuse for breaking up shots. By stabbing my daughter over and over again with needles when we could do them all at once. I said that was stupid since the shots are given one at time anyway.
If AJ got sick or needed an appt and my doc was out, then I'd refuse to bring her in if that doc was my only choice. I'd be sure to update it every 6m too just to be sure. Finally they said "She no longer works here" thank god.

Yes, I think she def. went overboard and I wish I had taken her name down. I always see the same 2 doctors when I go in for DD's appointments so I'm not worried about that, but in the chance that I might need to call the on call dr. I might question what is being said to me.

Re: ***UPDATE**When should you overreact
I am a SUPER worrier and I think this sounds totally overkill. She got abrasions from a cabinet drawer, she didnt walk on a bed of rusty nails. The doctor sounds like an AZZ.

frankly if I were you, I'd find out. Who was on call on such and such night. Thanks that person is red listed for me. I figure if pediatricians can fire a patient a patient should have the right to fire a pediatrician
