WWYD?

I've become friendly with this mom from school. The kids are in pre-k so they're 4. Her mom picks up her son one day a week. I just saw the grandmother driving the kid on Middle Country Rd. The kid was standing, behind her seat, holding on to the front seat. I was stopped at a light next to them. No way this kid was even buckled in. Would you tell the mom?

I don't know the circumstances of why this happened. But she made no attempt to put him back. She could have pulled into the mall, it was right there, to put him back in the seat. She just continued on.

I would mention it. There is probably a reason, but maybe this is going on all the time and the mom has no idea.

I would leave an anonymous letter in the child's cubby for the mother to read. I would want to know so I could murder my mother if this ever happened. This is illegal and a huge safety issue. But I wouldn't want to be identified lol.

Re: WWYD?

I would 100% say something
I think its horrible that people wouldnt say something this is not a minor thing this is a big deal and the mom may have no idea until her kid is one day killed in a car accident
This is not much different than children who are abused and people dont want to say anything or get involved.

Can you say something to the teacher? Maybe she can send out a generic note with some safety points?

I normally mind my own business but I couldn't bite my tongue on this one. Not on such a big safety issue. If one day the kid got hurt and I never said anything, I would have tremendous guilt.

I would bring it up, and on the other side of the coin I could TOTALLY see my MIL doing this ( which is why she isn't allowed to drive with my kids) and I would NOT be mad if you came up and told me. I would truly appreciate it actually. Chat Icon

I'd probably do this. People tend to shoot the messenger.

Wouldn't she be mandated to report it if I told her?

This is just it. I was faced with something similar with my MIL. Luckily I was there. But my MIL suggested me driving my 5 month old on the Belt Pkwy with no car seat. I got into a big fight with her about it. She's old school. And I know some grandparents are. I would want to be told if this was my mom or MIL doing this. But I don't know if the mom already knows.

Re: WWYD?

My mom drives my DD to school each day and if another parent witnessed her allowing my DD to do that I pray they would tell me. She could get killed!!! I need to know that. If I would say something to the mom.

Re: WWYD?

As a working mom who relies on babysitters and DH, I want someone to tell me if something is not right. Anything at all? I have no idea what is happening during the day, so I would hope another mom would be looking out for me.

Re: WWYD?

I would say something because I would absolutely want someone to say something to me if it was my child.

This is not like-oh I saw your kids eating ice cream, they had no seat belt on!

a part of me would feel to MMOB but the other part is screaming, this kid could get hurt...ugh tough but if I am friendly with the mom I think I would mention it to her. I would feel bad if something God forbid did happen next time. It's dangerous.

I would absolutely have to say something. But I would alert the teacher, so nothing negative comes back on you. That way, the teacher can say, "Another parent saw..." The safety of the child has to trump the potential for hurt feelings.

I would probably say something like "hay just wanted to let you know I saw your kid standing in the back seat holding on to the front while your mom was driving. It's something I would want to know. What are you doing for Thanksgiving??"

I wouldn't tell the teacher. Teachers have enough on their plates to worry about. They are mandated to report things they see, but if she didn't see it happen how does she know 100% all the details to report? Since you're the one who saw it, if I were you, I would let the mom know myself, anonymously is fine if you feel more comfortable that way. At least then she'll know and can handle it right away. If the teacher reports it, who knows how long it will take for the mom to find out, and since it was the grandma driving, its not right to have CPS knocking on the moms door for something she probably doesn't even know happened, kwim?

Re: WWYD?

I saw this article on FB and reminded me of this post. Next time you see situation where a child is in danger please don't think... I am just going to mind my own business. I get it if an adult makes a stupid choice, but when it's an innocent baby or child they don't know any better to tell the adult they are wrong.
